Oct 3, 2009 - Bridgeport, CT

In Bridgeport we went to P.T. Barnum Museum and saw a miniature circus lay out, a Mummy and other things from his shows that I could not photograph. After leaving here we went to Stamford Ct to Jose Grant jewelry store to have my 35 year old puzzle ring cleaned and to my surprise the 101 year old Jose was opening the front door of his business and I must tell you his story. Ten thousand dollars was at stake – the bet, between two friends was that one couldn't put a Jose Grant puzzle ring back together within 24 hours. "Of course the fellow...

Dec 13, 2006 - New York and Connecticut

The trip from Frutillar in Chile to New York City took about 24 hours with stops back through Puerto Montt and Santiago in Chile and then our re-entry point into the US in Dallas. We stayed with Jimmy and Alison in their beautiful apartment in Tribeca. (Thanks again guys!) We decided not to prolong the culture shock and jumped right into Xmas shopping madness in New York on our first full day. Just a bit different than the retail scene on Lambton Quay!! We also jumped right into the New York food scene and re-acquainted ourselves with some...

Sep 14, 2006 - Back Where it all Began

The bus is back in Hanover now, where it all started. It's been a great trek this summer. We had an incredible time riding around, talking to people, and doing our thing, but it's also been really great being able to keep this blog. Especially since I'm terrible about keeping a diary, so this has been a wonderful substitute. So what did we accomplish this summer? Convert a bus to run on waste vegetable oil. Check. Drive in a loop around the continental United States discussing alternative fuels with as many people as possible. Check. Thanks...

Aug 30, 2006 - Rowayton, CT

CONNECTICUT Connecticut was great as usual this time of year. The weather was perfect. It was especially nice because all my siblings and my dad were in town. We took my niece and nephew to the beach and they wore me down. But as you will see next week, this was only the beginning of our family adventure. Instead of going back to L.A. as originally planned, I changed my ticket for no additional fee (a perk when using your miles). All of us (except my dad) hopped in the car for a very special trip to Nantucket.

Aug 22, 2006 - Real Life Comes at You Fast

On to The Big City. I've spent some time in New York growing up, but have always done really touristy things, and have never really felt like I belonged there. Coming in this time, knowing that I was planning on moving to New York after the bus ends in the fall, I was hoping to see some different parts of the city, and find a new appreciation for the place that will soon be my home. Well, our time in New York turned out great! We got there in the afternoon, and had to try and find parking for the night, which didn't turn out to be TOO bad,...

Aug 5, 2006 - US Triathalon Nationals - Bridgeport

Here in Bridgeport to cheer on family member Christine! It is 1000 hours on Saturday morning and we have just returned from watching a full morning of the US National triathalon for open, 16 - 19 and U16. We came here to see my cousin, Steve's, daughter from BC compete in her first major international event. Christine comes to these US Nationals with a full resume of impressive wins over the last few years against girls her age and older and boys her own age by times that are astonishing. She was quoted in a recent TV interview in Victoria...

Jul 13, 2006 - Week 23 - Jump Picnic

Highlights * Before I left for Nederland Damien and Nic invited us to join them on a picnic held by Damien's work, Jump. The Jump Picnic is apparently held every year for employees and their friends.....and what an event it is. We were picked up by bus at 10.30am, entertained by a movie, "The 40 year old Virgin" and then dropped off at a beautiful large property located in upstate New York. The grounds consisted of beautifully manicured grass, trees and included a huge pond with a man-made beach and boat house. To top it off, it was all...

Jul 10, 2006 - Heading North

We thoroughly enjoyed our month at the Naval Air Station, PAX River. The marina is centrally located on the base, the price was right and much to see and do. Bill spent a great deal of time at the wood hobby shop. Jean thinks the water line on the boat goes up with each new piece of cherry wood he brings on board in the shape of a table, shelf, etc. He also brought out the Sailrite sewing machine and made covers for everything. His version of: If it moves, salute it- if it stands still, make a cover for it..... Son, Bill, came out for a...

Jun 10, 2006 - Rowayton Connecticut

Greetings from the United States! Last week we left off from Down Under (here's the link to the archives). This week we travel to Connecticut for my favorite weekend of the year. After all the festivities there, we take a short train ride into New York City to visit friends. We also hop on a new helicopter service that takes American Airlines passengers inside the JFK gates -- making the trip to the airport ever so easy. If you want to come for the ride pack your shorts and your red-white-and-blue clothes, because we're off on an East Coast...

Where's Johnny Jet?

Nov 14, 2005 - Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We left Richmond for our final driving day. What a feeling of both melancholy as well as excitement. We got home to an incredibly organized house thanks to our neighbors/dear friends Phyllis and John. Our overwhelming feeling for several days was, "we have so much STUFF. Why do we need all this stuff?" I mean, after spending 3+ months living in a tent, with only as much stuff as can fit in a car, you figure out exactly what you need and don't need to survive. We spent a good week cleaning out drawers, closets, basement etc. before we even...
