Jul 21, 2017 - Hike on Lakes of the Clouds Trail

We decided to spend our last full day in Westcliffe on a hike. And we did! The trip was almost 10 miles- five up and five down. The change in elevation was about 2500 feet. We turned around about 1/2 mile from the lakes because clouds were building all around us and we could hear thunder in the distance. Lightning is a major hazard in the mountains, one that we take seriously. It has been several years since we took a hike that long. Tomorrow we will pull up stakes and head north to Salida, CO or close to it.

Jul 18, 2017 - Westcliffe, Colorado Area

We left the Air Force Academy on Thursday, July 13th. Our reservation was up and there was no vacancy at the FamCamp. So, we moved back down to Colorado City KOA for a couple of days. RV parks fill up in July which makes it hard to get in a reservation. We left the KOA campground Saturday and headed a bit north and west to Westcliffe. Westcliffe is a small town (with a population less than 600 and an area of 1.2 square miles). Silver Cliff is a nearby town (their city limits abut). There are 2 gas stations between the two towns. We are...

Jul 5, 2013 - Alvarado campground

After the 4th parade, we headed south and then west about 9 miles to the Alvarado campground. This is a national forest campground and we had hoped we could go farther up and camp by ourselves. The host said there was nothing up there so we decided it was time to stop. We're at 9000 ft and can see the town of Westcliffe way below us. Today we started in on a hike to Comanche Lake- left from our campsite and headed up into the wilderness area. The sign said the lake was 5 miles up so we thought we could do that. We had not read a trail...

Jul 4, 2013 - 4th of July

Westerners know how to celebrate the 4th of July! We left our lake creek campsite in search of even more outstanding scenery so we drove down hwy 69 towards Westcliffe. We drove right into the town's parade which we found out was very controversial this year. Seems that the Patriot's Club had demanded their rights to walk in the parade with their weapons shouldered or holstered with no ammo. The town council was going to cancel the parade but they had a citizens meeting and it was reinstated. Right as we drove up to Main st., here comes a...

Apr 14, 2011 - Where the Deer, Buffalo and Antelope Roam

Greetings from the road! We just left Westcliffe, Colorado this morning and are heading to Northwest New Mexico. Before we left Santa Fe we had a call from a very dear friend, fellow Marine and LAPD Officer and our adopted “son”, Brandon Valdez. Brandon’s grandmother, who was very special in his life in many ways, was gravely ill and eventually passed away about two weeks ago. Brandon traveled from California to Trinidad, Colorado to be with family and attend her services. Since we were in Santa Fe we diverted and spent a night in Las...

Jun 23, 2008 - Westcliffe

Yesterday I made a connection with someone important in my life. My Step-Mother, Robyn. We lost touch about 6 years ago over something stupid. From what I can recall, she lectured me on getting married and having a child because “the time is now.” If I didn’t do it then, I would never have a chance to have a family. She didn’t want me to make the same mistake she made (not having a child). To me, it wasn’t what I wanted. I was frustrated on the pressure to have a family. Over time, we stopped talking. I was stubborn. On February 8th, 2007,...
