Jun 1, 2013 - More From Durango

We were really surprised to see how much Durango has grown since our last visit about 12 years ago. Durango is known for the Silverton & Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad. In the 1880s a narrow rail line was strung along the Animas River, a twisting river gorge, to connect Silverton & Durango. We enjoyed this awesome ride our last visit. Tomorrow we will be taking a white water raft trip on the Animas River. Hope to get some rapids, but the water looks pretty low. The drought is obvious in Colorado.

The journey today takes us from Mesa Verde through Durango to Vallecito, Colorado. Vallecito is a lake community about 20 miles north of Durango in the San Juan Mountains. The trip was about 100 miles, one of our shortest mileage days so far. The road was again picked by Kathy and proved to be full of curves with lots of ups and downs along with beautiful mountain peaks and valleys along the way. Staying at Blue Spruce RV Camp (Unit 90), the last great place, named such since it is at the end of the lake and not much beyond. The campground...
