Sep 6, 2018 - vail, colorado

Prior to our big adventure over seas, we wanted to spend some time with our family in Colorado. My cousin happened to scheduled her wedding in Vail two weeks before we left, so the timing was perfect!! A couple days after my dad and I arrived in Denver, we started the incredible and scenic road trip into the Rocky mountains. Once we arrived and fully hydrated, I was ready for my first high altitude hike. My dad then drove to Booth Falls in Eagles Nest National Forest. The hike was a 2 hour incline up a huge mountain in the Gore Range. The...

Oct 3, 2017 - A cooking lesson

Vail, CO Our tour director is definitely not having a good run of luck. We were able to get into Vail yesterday just ahead of the closing of the pass and were not one of the unfortunates that was stranded for the night. The snow was very wet and heavy so there was quite a bit of tree damage. Now our guide has learned that we cannot travel our planned route tomorrow because of closed roads and is having to reschedule meals and activities as best she can. In the meantime, those of us on the tour are amusing ourselves since half the shops are...

Oct 2, 2017 - Best laid plans

Vail, CO Even the best laid plans can go awry and that is what happened today. We headed out with Vail as our eventual goal but were keeping a close eye on the weather. We soon saw signs that winter is approaching. Our first stop was to be Wilkerson Pass for the spectacular views and a rest stop. Unfortunately the Wilkerson Pass pull out was chained up – closed for the season. Our next goal was Leadville where we were going to have lunch and explore the old mining town. It had snowed there, too, and someone hit a transformer, leaving the...

I had my first gondola ride up the mountain in Vail today. The summit was over 10,000 feet and snow was all around us. Thee village in Vail looked like it belonged in Switzerland. We walked the village and stopped at the Red Lion for a bit of libation. We had a beautiful day.

It's gorgeous; but then all of Colorado is! Our condo is located right along the stream. Last night, we opened our door to find 2 deer just standing there staring at us! the weather is in the upper 60's here this week, but just 10 or 15 minutes away you can already go skiing. A place called 'A Basin' opened up just a couple of days ago and we've...

Oct 4, 2013 - Snow & Vail, CO

We have been hoping for snow in Buena Vista for days, the weather keeps saying we have a 30% chance, but we only got a few flakes. As many of our readers know, we love snow. Being from Florida we rarely got to see it. Well, we read that Vail, Colorado was getting a few inches today and tomorrow, so we decided to go where the snow was.:-) We drove the seventy five miles and visited for a day, it was awesome! By the time we reached Hoosier Pass the snow started falling. It got so hard at times we could hardly see the road ahead, very...

Vail, one of the high-end ski and year-round resorts in the United States, is quite unique in that it truly resembles a European ski resort. One of the founders is from Germany and helped develop it in a way that makes you feel you are in another country. Jan 22, 2012 - Farewell Vail! And the snow just got really good....

Well folks, it was our last day today and Vail saved the best snow until our last day......it snowed for a lot of yesterday, overnight and again for most of today. This arrival of fresh snow made it an extremely busy day on the mountain, it was also a Sunday so all of the locals thought they'd come and ski Vail as well. The lift queues were worse than Perisher or Thredbo on a busy day! We are being picked up for the drive to Denver airport at 10.30 in the morning, fly to LA and then onto Sydneytown, touchdown 6.30 Wed morning....hope you...

Jan 17, 2012 - Some more photos...

Hi everyone! Just a few more photos to show you what we have been up to.....I must admit after 2 weeks here I think I am over the cold weather now and ready for some Australian warmth! Still enjoying Vail though, have had dinner out with a few different Aussie families that we know, which means Tim has found some 'fast' skiing buddies! We had a great day skiing a few days ago at Beaver Creek, a skiing resort about 15 mins away. A friend of a friend of Tim's kindly lent us their big car (in photo) to get there, it is the closest thing to a...

Jan 11, 2012 - Cold and snowy today....

Hi all, More snow overnight and today - yay! Tim ventured onto the slopes and Jack has Day 2 of snowboarding lessons. It seems that his group lesson turned into a private lesson as no-one else wanted to brave the cold - lucky Jack! Max, Sarah and I have been cruising around town discovering new shops, chatting with friendly shop owners, and eating some yummy food too. Our latest discovery is a 'beignet' which is basically a blob of doughnut batter filled with a choice of Snickers, Oreo cookies, praline, etc, etc. You can then choose a...

Jan 8, 2012 - More Vail.....

We woke today to beautiful sunshine and lots of lovely fresh snow on the ground. Sarah had her last day of a 6 day stint at ski school, so Tim, Jack, Max and I started the day having a family ski together. It was soon apparent that there were 2 camps in this group. The first was Tim and Jack, who like to go fast and have no fear and like to give advice! The 2nd was Max and I, who like to cruise along at our own pace, without feeling pressure, and really enjoy perfecting our technique on 'nice' runs. We shot video footage of us all skiing...
