Jun 24, 2018 - Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound We reluctantly leave the mountains behind and head east on interstate 70 through Denver. What a change! It’s like once we left the mountains we entered into the Plains region. The luscious green pine trees gave way to occasional outcroppings of trees, the mountains to rolling hills. Gone are the rock formations jutting up from the earth. The Plains reach from horizon to horizon with little to hinder the view. Grand expanses of waving grasses and crops blanket the ground. Once in awhile we pass an abandoned homestead returning...

Jun 19, 2018 - Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs We said our farewells to the iron enriched rock and the forbidding desert of Moab, Utah and headed back eastward. The sandstone responsible for the spectacular formations had its downfall – sand. Bits of fine sandstone blew over the dry earth, swirling and twirling and coating everything in its path, us included. After a stopover at Tilt, Colorado, we headed north along highway 13. The road was surprisingly flat (for Colorado) snaking its way in the valley through the mountains. The landscape of rock gave way to forested...

Sep 16, 2017 - Flat Top Scenic Byway

Yesterday a cold front came through bringing rain, welcome in this fire prone area but not welcome by us. It was a good opportunity to catch up on reading. Today as the sky cleared we went to the farmer's market. We bought the best smoked salmon we've ever had and found the perfect piece of art for the last blank spot in our house. And then we hit the road. We spent the rest of the day driving the Flat Top Scenic Byway. Much of it passed through national forest land on excellent gravel road. We had the impression we were pretty isolated,...

Sep 14, 2017 - through the mountains

Ken has driven our motor home to Alaska and back towing our Jeep, never having a doubt or hesitation. The most direct route here took us over the alpine road in Rocky Mountain National Park, which often closes later in September because of snow. The weather is warm this year, but that road has some tight switchbacks and steep climbs. We knew because we had been over it twice in a car. So for the first time we did not hitch up the Jeep and I drove independently until we left the park. The rest of the drive had gentler curves and we traveled...

Sep 9, 2016 - Steamboat Lake

We had a great day! Erin proved to her dad that she could do it! Hiked to the dam and back, not just a walk, 1.2 miles for her! Erin and Frank have been bonding here in this campground, setting mouse traps and catching them! After the 1st night with the mouse jumping on her bed, she had about enough of nature!! But now she is seasoned!! We had a wonderful breakfast before heading back to town.

This state park is one of the most beautiful campgrounds. It is fall weather here, tho, at almost 9000 ft! Has been windy but clear skies. So we went to Pearl Lake and Erin got to see her private rodeo with the horses. One horse went reared up while tied to the trailer after it got spooked by wind and swinging gate. Took 3 men to get it up and free and the horse ran up to the campground! Saw a typical day in Steamboat: horses, kayakers, fishermen, SUPers..all on one lake!

May 26, 2016 - Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs is forty minutes east of Craig. John and I skied Steamboat in the seventies. We both want to revisit the town and see how much it has changed. Okay, this is not one of our best ideas. I check the weather. It is a beautiful day with temperatures in the fifties. We opt to take the RV. Steamboat is a destination. It is not a scenic drive day. The trip to Steamboat is an easy run. It is Route 40. There is little elevation change and the speed limit is sixty-five. We can see the mountain in the distance. Obviously, ski season...

Daily Mileage--121 Total Trip Mileage--4598 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Aire is parked at the Steamboat Springs KOA. Pull thru with 50 AMP full hook-up. $42.00 per night. We couldn’t have picked a better weekend to visit Steamboat Springs. Labor Day Weekend events included a 2 day air show at the local airport, 3 day bike race, PBR bull riders, big farmers market, and a chili cook off. So much to do, so little time. We could see much of the air show from the KOA, as the runway is...

Summer Trippin'

Jul 28, 2015 - On to Steamboat Springs

Fri July 24 We left around 8:30 this morning, fueled up just east of Riverview and headed north up Wilson (CO19) and 287, etc. We took Route 14 across the northern part of the mountains over Cameron and Rabbit Ears Passes. Cameron was the highest at 10,276’. We had great scenery over most of the trip, especially through the Cache La Poudre River Canyon. The eastern part of 14, especially through “The Narrows” is, as you might expect, narrow road and it has a lot of sharp corners and switchbacks. Not white knuckle driving but you have to be...

Jul 17, 2015 - Steamboat Springs

Leaving Estes Park we opted to go the short route over and down through the Rocky Mountains. We left early before all the tourist traffic and were rewarded with super wildlife viewing, many Elk and Deer enjoying the early morning sunshine. Still lots of snow on the mountain, Garth and Shirley were in front of us about a mile, good shots of going down the many twists and turns, it was a tedious drive but the scenery was spectacular. Bill does very well doing the mountain drives, but we were all pooped when we arrived in Steamboat Springs....

Jun 14, 2015 - Day 22 June 14 2015 Colorado City to Steamboat Springs CO

Day 22 June 13 2015 Colorado City to Steamboat Springs CO What a surprise, had to plug the little heater in this morning to take the chill out of the trailer, 57 degrees. It started out with a partly cloudy sky with a beautiful sunrise, but eventually it cleared and was a beautiful sunny day with just a few drops of rain in the mountains. We left camp around 8AM heading to wherever we happen to stop. First stop was just a few miles up the road for a Walmart trip. From there we entered Canon City and saw lots of rafters cruising down the...

Aug 16, 2014 - Steamboat Springs - day 2

After a late start we went to Mt. Werner and rode the ski lift to the top. We hiked around on one of the trails which was about a mile. Enjoyed the beautiful vistas in all directions, the lush foilage, walking thru the beautiful forest and really enjoyed being outside with all that nature stuff goin' on! We felt rejuvenated and refreshed just seeing all that beauty. Ate outside atop their lift center and had a good meal - D had a hamburger and I a turkey burger with great side dishes. It was pricey and I thought they would give the minimum...
