Dec 25, 2012 - I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas

The dream of a white Christmas became a reality today. We woke up to heavy snow, and judging by the trees and ground outside, it had snowed very heavily all night. We were told there was about 45 centimetres of snow overnight. The Christmas morning photo of the boys on the balcony shows snow falling in the background. Thankfully, Santa still managed to find us. After opening some presents, we started skiing for our final day at Snowmass. Today both the conditions and scenery were breathtaking. The heavy snowfall made for such beautiful...

Dec 24, 2012 - Beautiful One Day, Perfect the Next

We awoke today to a slightly overcast day, with the promise of snow this afternoon. We made our way to the first chair lift early this morning where we were greeted by Santa and his elves (all the lift operators were dressed up), and today had a very "Happy Holidays" feel to it. We had a lovely morning break at "Elk Camp", sitting by the fire and warming up with coffee, hot chocolate and freshly cooked Danish pastries. We felt like we had the mountain to ourselves today, as it was very quiet with all the weekend skiers gone. By lunchtime...

Dec 23, 2012 - Oh Snow Pretty

Snowmass is just so pretty. I keep saying it, but I am in awe of the natural beauty here. Everyone is so sick of me saying, "Isn't this pretty". I have attached a photo of the view from where we had a hot chocolate this morning. It had just started to snow as we sat down, and it was very beautiful. The other photo I have attached is of Tom snow boarding down "TurkeyTrot", which is my favourite run. As you can see from the photo, it is just a gentle slope, about 2kms long through pine trees, which have snow all over them. It really is...

Dec 22, 2012 - A Private Tour of Snowmass and an Evening in Aspen

Well today was another amazing day. We all hit the slopes early this morning, in perfect conditions yet again. During the morning, we were taken on a private tour of the mountain. As a complimentary service, Snowmass has ambassadors who do daily mountain orientation tours. We were the only ones on our tour, and had 2 guides between the six of us. We all met up and caught the same chairlifts, and did most of the same runs, however one guide took Sam, Tom and I down the blue runs, while the other guide took Stu, Zac and Max down the black...

Dec 21, 2012 - Beautiful Snowmass

I woke up this morning and headed into Aspen to wander around the village for a couple of hours. The boys went straight from bed to the slopes, and I caught up with them again at around 11am. Snowmass is so spectacular. We had perfect conditions today for skiing and boarding. Stu, Zac, Sam and I skied while Max and Tom snow boarded. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and there was no wind. Even though we've been told it's busy here, there are no lift lines, and we have done many runs where we have been the only ones on the run. This is...

Dec 20, 2012 - Welcome to Snowmass

It was an early start this morning to get to San Francisco Airport for our flight to Aspen, Colorado. Tom said that when we went out for breakfast it was pitch black! As we were waiting to board the plane, the sign above the boarding gate showed the temperature at our destination as minus 22 degrees Celsius. We also saw something new to the USA, and that was the amount of dogs in the airport. They were not seeing eye dogs, they were comfort dogs. One dog even had a coat on that said "Emotional Support Dog". These dogs barded the planes, and...

Mar 26, 2011 - Saturday March 19-Friday March 25- Aspen/Snowmass

Saturday March 19-Glenwood Springs / Snowmass- Our plan was to leave around 9 AM. We didn't make it! We were up early, but there was so much to do, we were not able to get everything ready until around 10. We bid farewell to the dogs, and drove down to Frisco. We stopped at the Safeway and picked up some cornbread for dinner. We drove across I-70 west. We are so used to doing this drive in a bus, that we had no idea how much we have been missing! The views were spectacular! You are able see a lot more from the car than from a seat on a...

Mar 6, 2010 - Aspen/Snowmass Feb 27-Mar6

We had a wonderful time on our trip out west this year. The members of the SMSC hooked onto a trip run by the Richmond VA ski club. Bruce and Noble were great trip leaders. We drove to Richmond on Friday and stayed oveernight at the airport Doubletree hotel. Early Saturday we flew from Richmond to Chicago, then onto Denver. Had our usual stop at the grocerstore and Applejacks. Noble and Bruce provided a gourmet box lunch on the bus ride to Snowmass. We arrived late for our welcome party at the Top of the Village, but they held the wine and...
