Sep 2, 2010 - Montrose, Colorado

Early this morning, we headed west again, first going through the little town of Salida. It is a pretty town which is bigger than we expected. They even have a WalMart. Once we passed through Salida, we started to climb immediately. As I mentioned before, today's journey took us over Monarch Pass at over 11,000 ft., the highest peak we have taken the motorhome over to date. -- Today's scenery has to be amongst the most diverse we have encountered in one day also. We went from the dry, sparse vegetation near Salida to barren mountain tops...

Sep 1, 2010 - Heading West Again

This morning, we turned Suzi to the west once again. We had originally planned on stopping at the Royal Gorge, about 56 miles away, but I am disappointed in the Royal Gorge. I remember being there many years ago with my Papa. It was one of his favorite stops in Colorado. Now, however, they have turned it into an amusement park. I asked at the office to see if we could just stop and walk over the bridge and not partake in any of the amusement park activities, but they said, no, you have to pay the $25 fee to get to the bridge. Your entrance...

May 6, 2010 - Rocky Mountain High

Greetings from Pleasant Valley RV Park (PV) in Howard, CO, 14 miles east of Salida! (Howard is too small to be in the My Trip Journal map.) Having waited out the wind, rain, and snow showers in Albuquerque last weekend, we pulled out of Stagecoach Stop RV Park about 8AM on Monday and headed north. Due to our brilliant planning we were greeted with a beautiful day for the 300-mile journey bypassing Santa Fe and following U.S. 285 and CO 17 through Alamosa, CO and over Poncha Pass (9000+ FT.) to U.S. 50; then 20 miles east through Salida to...

Sep 23, 2009 - Black Canyon of the Gunnison and onward

We are just getting settled after a long day and I haven't had time to look at pictures yet. Please check back tomorrow. We left Ouray this morning and bid a sad farewell to a wonderful place. We recommend the Ouray Chalet Inn if you ever get out this way. The rooms are large and clean and the location is great - right in the middle of downtown. We toured the Black Canyon of the Gunnison national park, a place none of us knew anything about. It is sort of a mini-Grand Canyon except that the rock formations are spectacular. The walls of the...

Sep 21, 2009 - Rather a Sad weekend

Well it has been a rather sad weekend for me. My frail 80+ mother is not doing very well. It has been rather hard on me because I cannot just rush off to South Africa to be with her and my family. And, to crown it all we woke this morning to a grey day and have had rain on and off all day. Denver is reported to have had snow flurries too. It's time to start thinking of getting outta here. We have been discussing going back to Q for the winter and then maybe making our way East till we get to see the kids and grand kids sometime next year....

Sep 1, 2009 - Making memories!!

THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME!! This obviously was a "before" picture because we looked nothing like this at the end. It was a beautiful day to be on the Arkansas River. This was definitely a "four hour tour"!!! Our guide, Kyle, was a cute 26 year old that gave us the ride of our life...Before the trip he told us of various situations we could get into..like getting stuck on a rock, flipping over, etc. I was a little apprehensive since the last rafting trip I was on was with my Dad, David, my brother, Jimmy and other family but it ended up with...

Aug 31, 2009 - The wheels are rolling...

We headed north with family in tow (Scott, Gail, two nieces and a nephew) and ended up here in Salida...can you believe this view out of our bedroom window? We could actually throw a fishing pole out of our window and fish!! I was a little apprehensive that the motor home would slip into the river ( : needless to say guess it did not happen since I am writing this..hugs....

Aug 19, 2009 - Weird vehicles

Well I guess the Sturgis motor cycle rally is over for this year. Every weekend for the past month there have been an incredible number of motor cycles coming in the campground for overnight. Last weekend was the last of the attack and only a small group came in. But I am not so sure that they could be called motor cycles. They were motor cycles in the front and cars at the back. And they were all pulling "pop up" trailers behind them. The yellow one was ridden by an older gentleman with a "Father Christmas" beard. I commented that he was...

Aug 1, 2009 - It's the little things

It's the little things in this way of life that excite me the most. Yesterday I was luck enough to be shown a humming bird and she was sitting on her eggs in her nest. I did try to get good photos without disturbing her but it sure was difficult and I only got one that you can actually see her on the nest. Then we just spent a very lazy kinda day - or rather I did - Gary works far too hard, but he is keeping me in the style I should be accustomed to.About 4pm we had Howard and Michele over for a BBQ. And as usual I overate. This has to...

Jul 16, 2009 - We are still in Salida and will be for another month

What with the gorgeous scenery here in Colorado and with cleaning, repairing and just doing general maintenance things we are happy here in Salida. We will be here for at least another month. We may decide to spend another month here after the 15th August, who knows but for the time being we are doing all the things that haven't been done in 2 years. After a very wet start to our stay here the weather has settled and gotten downright hot. Although we haven't run the air conditioning yet so maybe it's just me. Everything is green and the...

Jun 27, 2009 - Wilderness Expeditions Salida

I know and I'm sorry..... Thanks to all who emailed and whom we worried because we didn't post. There is nothing wrong and I just kinda got a bit lazy. We came through to Salida Co in the middle of May because we had our annual doctor's appointments in Leadville Co on the 18th. We kept those appointments and I had to return for further blood tests and then there was a question about my high calcium levels so had to go to the hospital here in Salida for even more blood tests. There was just one problem the doctor forgot to tell me that it...

Sep 12, 2008 - On to Gunnison Co

Last Sunday Gary and I decided that we wanted BBQ sandwiches for dinner and the nearest BBQ stand is 36 miles away in Buena Vista. A town about 1000 foot lower than Leadville, good I can catch up on breathing normally again. Anyway off we go and we get there and "Punkys" is closed. What a let down...So we find a hamburger joint and buy hamburgers and a milkshake each. Boy they were good, both the milkshake and the hamburger. I have to say though that "Whataburger" in Texas still makes the best burgers I have ever tasted. Yesterday we...
