Jun 20, 2017 - Rangely to Rifle Gap State Park

Rangeley to Rifle Gap State Park Day 15: Monday June 19, 2017 Our move from Rangely to the Lakeview Campground in Rifle Gap State Park was short: 89 miles direct; however, we added a side trip through Meeker and we drove into Rifle to purchase dry ice at City Market—a total of 124 miles. We departed the Buck & Bull RV Park in Rangely at 10:00 am and arrived at our site in Lakeview at 1:00 pm. On the way to Rangely Friday June 16th the White River was high and muddy. When we passed the Kenney Lake Dam we noticed the overflow from the Dam; we...

Jun 12, 2016 - Rifle Gap State Park

/// Rifle Gap State Park Rifle, CO. Sunday – June 12, 2016 A Travel Day: We departed Steinaker SP shortly before 10:00 am. The weather was mostly clear and mild. Our route today would take us east on US 40 to Colorado and then on Hwy 64 to Rangely, Meeker and south on Hwy 13 to Rifle. The road conditions were mostly okay with a few rough spots. The overall scenery far out weighed any rough spots encountered. The traffic was very light. At times between Rangely and Meeker we would travel for miles without seeing another motor vehicle. The...

Oct 11, 2015 - Rifle, CO - Daryl & Mary Meisner

Hello Everyone, Today we traveled from Golden, CO to Rifle, CO which meant traveling thru the extremely high and beautiful Rocky Mountains! Driving along Interstate 70 brought you right thru the mountains using multiple tunnels. However, after exiting the Eisenhower Tunnel, we found ourselves at about the peak of 11,200 feet of elevation with nothing but downhill to go! All along the road were signs for truckers to keep on the brakes for the long downgrade! We made it safely and had a great adventure thru the Rockies. We stopped to see our...

Aug 28, 2015 - Rifle Gap State Park, Colorado

We arrived at Rifle Gap State Park near Rifle, Colorado on August 22. We're enjoying this area for ten days before moving on to Moab, Utah. It's a new area for us, and we're really enjoying the beauty of the state park. There are several state parks in the area. We chose Rifle Gap due to the full hookups availability. Rifle Falls State Park only six miles away has a beautiful water fall. Bill enjoyed hiking to the top of the 70 foot waterfalls and checked out some caves behind the falls. We enjoyed a picnic at a nice spot right in front of...

Nov 2, 2013 - Rifle Gap State Park

Today was a travel day, we made it over two passes, Fremont and Vail. Fremont was the harder one to climb, it seemed to go straight up, we went really slow, we did run into a bit of slushy ice on the pass. It was incredibly beautiful with all the frozen lakes and icy rivers we passed. When we got to Vail Pass, we were really surprised to see we were at the summit before we even knew it. We kept waiting for the signs showing we were actually driving on the pass and we missed them. By the time we saw a sign we had already done all the...

Sep 1, 2011 - Chest Pains Again

Woke up with chest pains again. Went into town and located the hospital. Told them I was having chest pains but did not think I was having a heart attack. They did some quick tests and confirmed no heart attack. They decided to find the problem and I had another CT Scan. Found I have Pericardial effusion, which is excess fluid in the sac that surrounds the heart. Since the Rifle hospital was unable to treat this problem I was loaded into an Ambulance and sent to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. Turns out this is a leading heart...

Arrived at Rifle Gap State Park and have a great site. This is a very nice park with a great view of the lake. Here for 2 nights. ---------- The two-night stay turned out to be several more days. And since we had to stay during a very busy Labor Day weekend, we lost our beautiful site after one night. However, there is no such thing as a really bad site at Rifle Gap. (Connie)

Aug 31, 2011 - Rifle, CO - Rifle Gap State Park

It was an 178 mile trip from Morrison to Rifle, CO. It was a beautiful drive which would have been much better without the rain for about half of it. As we approached the highest points of I-70, Loveland Pass, Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass, we could see the mountain peaks all around us but the rain made pictures difficult and even obscured our view greatly. By the time we reached Glen Canyon, the weather had cleared somewhat and revealed some fantastic scenery as we traversed the narrow canyon. It is so narrow, there is no room for an...

May 23, 2011 - 10 Rainy Days

Wow, when you live in Arizona, you kind of forget what the spring rains are like. Tomorrow will be 10 days here and it has rained every day. In fact it’s two in the afternoon and we just got another shower with the thunder booming and a little lightning. They are calling for showers tomorrow on our moving day. Hopefully it will hold off while we are getting ready to go in the morning. We are moving to Boyd Lake State Park. It will be a 270 mile drive. We will be going through Denver to get there. We have a spot reserved for 4 days. The...

May 14, 2011 - Moving Day

We spent most of yesterday planning where we are going next and a rough guesstament of our trip until we get to Iowa for our 41st class reunion. It’s hard to plan where to go without knowing what it’s like where you are going. Carolyn got pretty frustrated, so we finally called it quits about 5:00. We settled on Rifle Gap State Park. We can’t make reservations, so we will just have to show up as a walk-in and see if there are any spaces available. We got left about 9:50 and had a 170 mile drive. We wanted to stop in Grand Junction to go to...

Aug 17, 2009 - Red Mountain & Rifle Gap

This morning we did our return trip over the Million Dollar Highway. John was even able to keep his eyes open to take pictures. He appeared very relaxed though a couple of the pics didn't turn out. I'm not sure if it was due to motion of the road, or shaking of the hands. We headed for Rifle Gap State Park. This is a park where I used to take the boys camping when they were younger. The campgrounds have changed tremendously. What was once primitive and shaded by pinon pine is now paved over with flush toilets and PAY showers. No...

Jul 30, 2009 - From Howard CO to Rifle, CO

Traveling with Carol, Lou & Beau ………… Our trip from Howard to Rifle on 7/30 was just beautiful, along Rte. 24 and I-70, through the mountains. It is amazing how, when going along the road, around every curve (and there are many), there are so many gorgeously different Rocky Mountain views – close-up and in the distance. Can you tell I am loving this? I really am. Pictures are wonderful to have, but they don’t do the sight justice…oh well, we will always have the memories. Our trip took us through Vail and Snowmass, to name only a few. These...
