Sep 12, 2017 - Fly Fishing West Colorado

Last month I hired a guide to 'drift' boat fly fish the Grey Reef of the North Platte River near Alcova WY. Now I needed help with my wading version of this sport. Reading the water to locate fish and more knowledge of what rig, a tippet with single or multiple flies or just a leader with one fly, with/without weights, plus maybe a strike indicator(bobbin), to use, were both issues I needed more comfort/wanted to address. So, I hired a walk/wade guide(Malachi) from RIGS Fly Shop near Ridgway in Western Colorado. Again, money well spent!...

Aug 14, 2015 - Ridgway State Park, Colorado

We left Eagle Nest, New Mexico on August 7 as planned and arrived in Ridgway, Colorado on August 8. Our one night out was at Westcliffe, Colorado. Our trip was uneventful except for the bear that decided to run in front of us as we approached Monarch Pass! Bill braked and he kept running so we avoided any catastrophe. Before we left Eagle Nest we took in the Michael Martin Murphey chuckwagon dinner and concert at the Rocking 3M ampitheatre. It's located up a mountain road outside of Red River, New Mexico. That day there had been a mudslide...

Aug 22, 2013 - Home Sweet Home

We left Cripple Creek early this morning, we had quite a drive ahead of us. We stopped in the Buena Vista area and viewed the Collegiate Peaks Overlook. This is a “WOWSER” area of Colorado with some of the highest mountains in the state. The Collegiate Peaks (or Collegiate Range) is a name given to a section of the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains located in central Colorado. This area is also the headwaters of the Arkansas River. The Collegiate Peaks include some of the highest mountains in the Rockies. The section is so named because...

Jul 19, 2013 - Market & Western Village

We visited the Ridgway Farmer’s Market again today. Today the weather was beautiful, I was able to take a lot of pictures to show the market this time. We enjoyed going from booth to booth, I found some great deals on jewelry and bought a couple of pieces. Jerry even tasted Yak meat for the first time, he said it was pretty good. We bought some delicious yellow cherries and vegetables. Don’t miss this one if you are in Ridgway. After the market we discovered a little western village across the street. We went to the visitors center for...

Jul 12, 2013 - Ridgway Farmer's Market

We enjoyed shopping again today at the Ridgway Farmer’s Market. Every Friday - 11am-4pm they have a wonderful market in Ridgway Town Park, the same park where parts of the movie True Grit were filmed. :-) We didn’t stay long today because it started to rain, but they sure had a great variety of fresh, local, naturally grown produce. Ridgway Farmer's Market supplies high-quality, specialty vegetables, herbs, flowers and eggs from local farms, as well as a diverse assortment of arts/crafts and pastries. This week's specials were the local...

Jul 9, 2013 - Dennis Weaver Memorial

One of our neighbors told us not to miss the Dennis Weaver Memorial Park while staying in Ridgway. We were so glad he told us about this awesome park. We enjoyed just sitting by the river and watching the birds in the area. It is a magical place of reflection and relaxation dedicated to the memory and vision of actor/environmentalist Dennis Weaver. I loved watching him as "Chester" in Gunsmoke. This 60-acre public park is a permanent wildlife preserve along the lush Uncompahgre River corridor and is at the entrance to Dennis Weaver's...

Jul 7, 2013 - True Grit

We are having a great time exploring the tiny town of Ridgway. We read so much about movies made here, we had to go back and watch True Grit again, just to see how many times we could spot parts that were filmed in Ridgway. I took pictures of most of them, I forgot to photograph the house where Rooster lived with his cat and Chinese friend. I have pictures of the building that was used for town hall in the movie and a lot of beautiful scenes of the mountains surrounding the area etc. We even had lunch at the True Grit Café, we ate on the...

Jul 3, 2013 - Ridgway, Colorado

We had a very fast and easy travel day today. We only had to drive for about three hours. This must be one of our shortest moves ever. :-) The beautiful scenery on the drive made it feel even shorter, there is so much to see on the way. We did get behind a lot of bikers, they were great about moving over and letting us pass when they could. We also saw a lot of smoke today, we heard the wind was blowing the smoke our way most of the day. This is the first time we have seen any of the smoke from the awful fires in Colorado. We love the...

Jun 17, 2013 - Hollywood Connection In Colorado

From Kings River Bend RV Park – Montrose, CO Day began with breakfast at Cimarron Café and ended with a late lunch at the True Grit Café while in between lots to do and see in Ridgway, CO….that’s right Ridgway without an “E”! Ouray County has only two towns and we have now spent a day exploring in each – Ouray & Ridgway. Our opinion is that Ridgway was much more interesting and a lot less wanting your “tourist $$”. Also we encountered some very friendly and helpful people during our Ridgway visit. Each one adding smiles and laughter to our...
