Aug 25, 2009 - Lariat Loop

It was a gray and rainy day in the Denver area today so we postponed our plan to drive up Mt Evans, the tallest paved highway in the country. We changed to the Lariat Loop which is a scenic trip around the southwest side of the Denver Metropolitan area. Denver has the largest park system in the country and we sure drove past a lot of them today. They were in use even though it was a weekday and rainy. We stopped for our picnic at Red Rocks Park which is a huge deposit of red cliffs in the middle of gray rocks. There are a lot of trails...

Living Our Dream

Aug 24, 2009 - Golden CO

Another no incident travel day! We left Gypsum about mid morning and followed I-70 to the outskirts of Denver, more specifically Golden. We crossed two passes today and didn't overheat the engine or the transmission. Doug just took it slow and dawdled up the grades like the big boys and the truck didn't miss a lick. Guess the time Doug spends browsing through Flying J stores is starting to prove itself in his driving. We are camped at Clear Creek RV park right in downtown Golden. This is a city run park and we have Clear Creek on one side...

Living Our Dream

May 27, 2009 - Golden

We are staying at a nice RV park in Golden, Colorado, just outside of Denver for the next 5 days… using it as a base for explorations into the surrounding area and to meet up with old friends…. Simone Ince, an med school classmate, who lives in Golden and practices dermatology and her husband, Erik. Also, Jeff Logan, a physician's assistant and Buddhist who has been a close friend for a long time that I met through AMSA (the American Medical Student Association) about 20 years ago. Our friends, Kevin, John and Trish, will be coming up from...

May 23, 2009 - Denver to Des Moines

Up and off to Des Moines....Iowa that is.... Ok...as incredible as southern Colorado is....that is how flat NE Colorado is. I was so surprised. I thought it would be a gradual change when leaving Denver...oh no...flat, flat, flat and I'm not sure if it's possible but Nebraska is even flatter!!!!!! When we got into Iowa, (after FLAT!!!) the slight rolling hills looking lovely but soon...it was back to ..flat!!!! I can't really make any comments on Des Moines - we stayed at the hotel, eat dinner at Rock Bottom and left the next morning. Off...

Oct 31, 2008 - Home

As we drove through Denver and climbed up I-70 to our house things seemed both familiar and strange all at one time. We had forgotten how BROWN Denver is in the late fall - there was no color at all. Most of the leaves were off the trees and the only green that could be found were the soccer fields that were not there when we left in August 2007. The weather was unseasonably warm - sunny and in the 70s. We could not have asked for a better homecoming gift. As we pulled into our cul-de-sac I could not help thinking whether anyone even...

Oct 30, 2008 - Golden, Colorado

Thursday 10/30/08 Golden, Colorado We went to Golden, Co today to tour the Coors brewery. Coors is my second best brewery tour, Guinness Brewery in Dublin, Ireland I think is the best. After the tour we had lunch in town, walked around then drove up to Lookout Mountain. The drive to the top of Lookout Mountain is up a very windy road that rises about 2500 feet. Along the way there are several bicyclists going up and down; quite a challenge. At the top is the grave and museum of Buffalo Bill Cody. The view from the top is spectacular, you...

Sep 16, 2008 - To Colorado

Ride to Colorado. Comments from Don: DORIS will add on later. Since my bride is taking a lot of the pictures now I thought I might make a few comments about this leg of the trip from Moab to Denver, CO. (actually Golden, CO. 10 miles from Denver). While the pictures are very good I must say again that they do not do justice to what we saw on this day!! It was the most spectacular 300 miles we have ever driven. Many of the pictures we took were at an elevation of 11,000 feet, some at 7000 feet so it's hard to portray in a photo the...

Sep 6, 2008 - Golden, Colorado

It seems like some type of unwritten rule that when you visit the Denver area you MUST take the Coors brewery tour in Golden, Colorado. So that's where we headed today. First stop, however, was Lookout Mountain. We had hoped to take in the view of Denver and were disappointed by the amount of schmutz in the air.( the only word I can think of to accurately describe the air quality ) I'm not sure if the brown haze is a year round phenomenon or if it is seasonal - either way it isn't pretty. Fortunately Lookout Mountain also contains a...

Jun 30, 2008 - Out and about in Denver!

Today, we had the day on our own as Mindy and co. made a family visit to Mindy's Grandma in Sterling which is a couple of hours away. So Jon and I, after a very brief sleep in, went out and about. Our first stop was to William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Museum and grave. No doubt you have all probably heard of Buffalo Bill. He earned his nickname for his skill while supplying Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat. He eventually became famous for his Wild West Shows but was also known for his helping to improve the rights of women...

Jun 20, 2008 - Brew And A View

From Cherry Creek State Park – Aurora, CO Was too tired last night to do the journal update. We got back later than most days we are out sightseeing and then don’t ask me why, I watched the Astros lose their 8th straight game. Pitching, pitching, where is the pitching? Oh well, I knew it was going to be a long season but the month of May disillusioned me a bit. At the Foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains is the city of Golden. It is the city where Jolly Rancher candy was born and home to the Colorado School of Mines since...

Home Sweet RV - 2008

Jun 15, 2008 - Golden(Denver W), Co

Went 115 miles to west Denver, Golden Co. and checked into Dakota Ridge Rv Resort. This is the only decent park close to Denver, they are very expensive $49.58 for the night. They say they have large pull thru's for any size rig, not from what we could see, you had to disconnect and park in front of your rig or else have extra long hookups. The wi-fi didn't reach our site and many others, they say they are working on it, their cable tv had problems on 8 channels. They charge extra for cable, 50 amp, everything. We weren't very happy with...

Jun 13, 2008 - Kayak Rodeo

Golden Clear Creek RV Park is a lovely city run campground. Only 36 sites along the creek where one can fish, canoe ,or kayak. Right now the creek is quite high from the runoff from the mountains. On Tuesday, after we checked in and hooked up, we took a walk along the creek when we heard a loudspeaker announcing the beginning of competition in a "Kayak Rodeo". What fun! The participants were beginners, intermediates, and masters from both genders. They had to stay in the white water as much as possible and do cartwheels, flips, etc. Quite a...
