Oct 22, 2020 - A Turn in the Weather

Fort Morgan, CO We have had wonderful weather throughout our trip. Even the California and Colorado wildfires did not impact us much although we were aware of them from time to time. Occasionally we could smell the fires; we were unable to drive a couple of roads because of them; sometimes the sky was hazy. We just learned that Estes Park (Rocky Mountain National Park) is under a mandatory evacuation order. The sky is so thick with smoke that it is like nighttime at 2:30 in the afternoon. The thought of the devastation possible is awful....

We are not morning people, but on days when lots of driving lies ahead, we get ourselves up and going. Only one cup of coffee allowed. So we got out the well worn HWH manual and Ken followed the instruction for manual retraction. When the jacks came up and he turned on the ignition, the "jacks down" alarm blared even though the jacks were no longer down....

We are feeling like getting home soon, so putting a lot of miles in the last couple of days. Crossed Nebraska, rained off and on, sometimes really hard. This campground is almost full, what a change from our previous campgrounds.

We awoke to downed trees and limbs everywhere in the park. We were very lucky as were our neighbor that was parked behind us. We all got out and started pulling the limbs off the roads until the parks department showed up. We got a late start due to the weather and breakfast. I had decided not to go through Denver. I am not sure why tho. I had researched the map and chose to head south on CO-71 to Limon and then SW on CO-86. This would bring us to I-25 about Castle Rock My day turned lousy when I missed the intersection. By the time I...

Somewhere my 20 amp extension has walked away, so off to Walmart we go. The campsites are curbside so it took quite a bit of work to get level. But mom and I are getting much better at this. We got it all together for the incredible thunderstorm to begin. This area is very much tornado area, so we were somewhat concerned. Our campsite was tree lined which kept us well shaded but tree limbs were cracking everywhere. This again was another free campground that I found thanks to Nick Russell. This is a awesome overnight stay. Tomorrow we head...
