Aug 9, 2018 - Day 72 - Fairplay CO

Coldest morning yet on the trip. 38 degrees with a light breeze. I walk LJ down a path next to a small stream. Very nice plus it gets us out of the wind. Our friends Jere and Debbie arrive about 1015 and the 3 of us (Debbie stays behind for a work related conference call) head for the wedding. It's at our friend's house about 15 minutes away. Beautiful setting - the property backs up to a national forest. It's a Jewish ceremony with a female rabbi - how's that for modern times. It all goes off very well and it's great to catch up with our...

Summer 2018 Big Trip

Aug 8, 2018 - Day 71 - Fairplay CO

Travel day and we're heading into the Rockies to Fairplay, which is about 10Kft elevation. Pretty sure the RV cannot haul the truck up those mountains, so the plan is to leave the park with the truck in tow and disconnect it before we hit the steep stuff and drive separately. I want to gas up the RV also, so I pick a gas station at the exit for Fairplay and off we go. The plan gets executed reasonably well. The gas station is pretty tight, so I decide to go to the next exit after we disconnect, but there's nothing there except a restaurant...

Summer 2018 Big Trip

Jun 7, 2017 - Day 39 - Kremmling to Fairplay, CO

Today’s ride to Fairplay, CO was an unexpected test of my endurance which included an 81-mile ride with 5,732’ of ascent. That is a lot of climbing, and is the most I have done on a single day on this entire trip. Originally, today’s destination was an RV Park just north of Breckenridge, CO. However, mid-ride I found out that they don’t accept RVs over 20 years old without a special dispensation from the president, a notarized document from the pope, or something of that import and magnitude. Since our beloved Bus is 34 years old, and just...

Oct 9, 2013 - Fairplay, Colorado

We had a great day today visiting the beautiful town of Fairplay, Colorado. In the days of the early pioneers, hopeful gold prospectors fanned out across this area. The town of Fair Play was established in 1859 at the junction of Beaver Creek and the South Platte River, and served as a supply center for nearby mining camps. Fair Play was rechristened as South Park City in 1869, then changed back to Fairplay (one word) in 1874. As the mining industry faded, tourism, along with cattle-raising and hay-growing, became the economic mainstays of...

Jun 9, 2013 - 6 Meter Radio Contest

Today Tom wanted to work a ham radio contest from the top of the mountain (known as windy point). This is a 6 meter contest. So a friend of our (also a ham) John Rupprecht has a park model up on the top and offered to let tom use it. We set up on his deck and used our car battery for power. So take a look at his setup. We hung a dipole and used that as his antenna. He used an unbrella so not to get sunburned. Sun is very intense up here at about 9,700 ft. above sea level.

Jun 8, 2013 - 39th Wedding Anniversary

Started off by making Tom a great breakfast. Then we just did some local touring in the area. I fixed corn beef and cabbage for our dinner. One of our favorites. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I was born on St. Patty's Day. Never know.
