Home Sweet RV - 2013

Aug 2, 2010 - Age, Wisdom, and Caution

Art celebrated his birthday on Sunday. We sometimes hear that one of the benefits of growing older is gaining wisdom. You might have heard the expression “With age comes wisdom.” From ancient times to the modern era, there have been various versions of this expression. It suggests that our lifetime experiences somehow make us wiser. After all, we’ve seen a lot of things in all those years, experienced a lot of changes and we have learned to do things differently or maybe better as a result. Perhaps we are looked at with more respect because...

Jul 30, 2010 - Water Everywhere

We left the Salida area and began our short trip west to Curecanti National Recreation Area. I was a little apprehensive about the drive because we had to cross the 11,000 foot Monarch Pass. It would be a seven mile ascent and an 11 mile descent with a 6% grade most of the way down. It has been two years since we drove any passes of significance but it went better than I expected but I still get sweaty palms thinking about “the next one.” Rattlesnake pass (in Oregon) has been the greatest challenge and the one to be compared against. We...

Aug 20, 2009 - Boat Trip on the Gunnison

Today was a strenuous one for us. We were taking the boat down the Gunnison in Black Canyon and to get there, we had to climb down and then back up a steep winding stair case numbering 232 in total. Then we had to walk close to a mile along the old Denver and Rio Grande RR bed to where we boarded the boat. Talk about doddering, we really showed our stuff but we made it. The Utes said that any man that entered Black Canyon would not come out alive. Well, it is starkly rugged and beautiful. It has very steep sides and the distance from rim to...

Living Our Dream

Aug 19, 2009 - South Rim of Black Canyon

Today’s tour was to the South Rim of Black Canyon along the Gunnison River. Basically this canyon is far more dramatic than the Grand Canyon. At one point we were at an overlook timidly peering over a guard rail and unable to see the river far below us. We could just barely hear it as it raced along cutting away at the rock. At one overlook the river is 2700 feet straight down and at another the opposite wall is about a 7 iron shot away. Quite a magnificent view! And we were certainly able to tell that school has started in this area. No...

Living Our Dream

Aug 18, 2009 - Crested Butte CO

Today Doug got to sleep in until 10. Fillmore has a morning ritual. JoAnn usually gets up real early and goes downstairs where he is asleep. He sometimes acknowledges her by opening an eye, but not often. He stays in his bed until he hears Doug stirring in the first seconds of wakefulness. Then he gets up, stretches and if JoAnn isn’t looking crawls under the door to the upstairs to see Doug. If she is paying attention or more likely wants to get Doug up, she opens the door and sends him up. He then perches on the edge of the bed so he can...

Living Our Dream

Aug 17, 2009 - Gunnison River and Black Canyon

Doug managed to stay out of trouble today. He finally got enough nerve to report yesterday’s incident to the insurance company, so that’s out of the way. He’s been a customer of theirs for 49 years. Hope they don’t can him now. We left Elk Creek Campground and drove west on 50 to where we picked up scenic route 92 and we couldn’t have made a better choice! This was one of the most spectacular routes we’ve been on. JoAnn filled up her memory card on the camera again. She has so many pictures to post, we have to hope for a couple of rainy...

Living Our Dream

Aug 16, 2009 - Curecanti National Recreation Area

Today we traveled from Buena Vista to just outside of Gunnison and it was NOT an uneventful trip. To start with Doug wasn't paying attention and came too close to a stone pillar while exiting the campground. The trailer hit the pillar, lifted the rig some 2 feet in the air dumping everything inside to the floor of the rig. We picked it up and continued. There are some minor dings to the side of the trailer. Driving over Monarch Pass, we had to stop once on the way up to let the transmission cool. We stopped at the top for lunch and further...

Living Our Dream

Sep 25, 2008 - Curecanti National Recreation Area

The campground we are staying at is called Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch. It is located about 10 miles west of the town of Gunnison. This is a membership only campground which we are able to get into with our RPI membership. It offers up all the amenities - clubhouse, pools, spas, shuffleboard, mini golf, rental cabins and some very nice campsites. It is located far enough off the grid that our cell phones and verizon aircard (which we use for internet access) don't work. I have to admit, I'm kind of enjoying the peace and quiet!! In...
