Sep 10, 2016 - Crested Butte

We stayed another night at Lake Irwin and enjoyed the great weather. Went down to the Butte to get Bill's bike fixed and intended to ride. But it was almost 4 by the time they finished so we opted for a beer at The Eldo. Disappointing because we had hoped for one of their brewery beers but they had nothing on tap. On our way back to the truck we heard all this honking and clapping like a parade was coming down the main Street. Well, here comes a lead car honking and behind it was a groom on a mtn bike balancing his wife - both in wedding...

Sep 9, 2016 - Lake Irwin- cg

We always have to make a stop in Crested Butte so we came up from Almont to the Lake Irwin- cg. It's located about 25 minutes north of the Butte on a beautiful blue lake. It's surrounded by 12,000 ft mtns. We hiked about 2 miles out from the cg up a dirt road where you're looking over at the west elk wilderness area. Crystal blue skies- some of the best weather yet!

Jun 2, 2015 - Crested Butte

Our favorite place for the past 30 years has been Crested Butte. We had to come back again although we have found some more less touristy places that are just as beautiful. We went to the ELDO, which is a brewery that has a porch overlooking main st. Afterwards we had a pizza at the Secret Stash- another great stop. We headed up Kebler Pass to find a camp spot and found a great snowmobile parking lot. Looked at at mt crested butte and other snow covered mtns. Hiked about a mile up the bike trail.

Aug 10, 2014 - Ouray

We spent the last 3 days camping for free outside of lake Irwin, co and mtn biked and hiked everyday. Went into the Butte for food and a beer at the ELDO. It got crowded with the weekend and drove towards Montrose and Ouray. Got our olathe corn for supper and headed up 550 past Ouray for a camping site along Thornton park. Talked to a nice couple from grand junction who are atv-ing up here.We are looking out at the red mtns at 13000 ft.550 is quite the road-straight down 2000 ft drops on the major road as you go towards Silverton. Good...

Aug 7, 2014 - Crested Butte

We finally made it to cb in time for my birthday on the 4th. Celebrated by having a beer at The ELDO which is a brewery downtown. Great upstairs porch where you can sit out and watch what's going on. We drove on up towards Lake Irwin and found a spot off of Kebler Pass to spend a rainy night. The next day we drove on to the lake and found another free spot across from the organized campground. Hiked around above the lake about 4 miles. We found some king boletes mushrooms ( or called CEP's). They are the best rooms we have ever eaten.Stayed...

Sep 6, 2013 - Crested Butte, Colorado

When we were staying in Ridgway, Colorado, we planned to drive to Crested Butte the same day we visited Gunnison. We never made it that far. We decided to make the drive today and were very glad we did. Locals all over this area told us not to miss it, now we know why. It is one of the prettiest towns we have visited in all our travels. Crested Butte is a quaint 1880s mining town and Registered National Historic District. It’s also the "official wildflower capital" of Colorado. In 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named...

Jul 14, 2013 - Lake Irwin

We biked straight up about 2 miles to look at the campground and decided to move up there for the lake and mtn view. Word of warning - in the haste to move up a gravel washboard road to claim a great site ,please secure stuff inside the camper. We got the perfect site but had to clean up the tipped over coffee pot and other various staff that got knocked on the floor. No problem-got the site and went to drive over to Gothic to see wildflowers. Back to the Eldo and over to the Secret Stash for pizza!

We drove down Cottonwood towards Taylor Reservoir so we could get over to the Butte. Crested Butte is one of the prettiest mountain towns at @ 9800 ft. We had to stop at the Eldo pub for a blackout beer one of their specialities. The ELDO has been a stopping place for years - sit on their deck and watch people! We found a free site on the road to Lake Irwin on Kebbler pass above CB.

Jul 6, 2009 - Off to Crested Butte

Good morning everyone: Although it is 6:00am here on July 7th, I need to finish the second have of yesterday's adventures. We left the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park about 1:30pm to travel 55 miles West to Gunnison then 30 miles North to the small box canyon town and ski resort of Crested Butte. We did this trip for three reasons: first the ride is supposed to be one of the more beautiful scenic byways in the area of which there are so many; second, to get to a higher elevation to see more of last winter's snow cap and third to...

Jul 5, 2009 - Crested Butte

Crested Butte lies at the end of state route 135 about 28 miles north of Gunnison. There is no other highway that goes to Crested Butte. The town is surrounded on the other three sides by mountains. Sue says that it is "Alpine" based on her visit to Switzerland and Italy. Our first visit to Crested Butte came on Wednesday when we drove the Escape there, stopped at the visitor's center and took a hike on the Lower Loop Trail. The trail starts (after a one mile walk down a dirt road) from the west side of town and runs northward through a...

Aug 12, 2008 - Lake Irwin Surrounding Area

We have had numerous bear sightings during the past two nights, but fortunately no bear damage. I have yet to see these bears. Colorado Division of Wildlife and Forest Service people have been by to visit with me, and like me they don't want to have to trap or put these bears down, but they like me are concerned, and hopeful that they'll move on to their natural food sources. Two policemen from Crested Butte also stopped by yesterday to check on the bear situation. It seems that this issue has gotten some pretty high level attention, which...

Jun 18, 2008 - Riding day 4: Montrose to Crested Butte

In anticipation of the longest ride of the tour, we arose at 5 am. Montrose was well organized to serve the campers a quick and calorie-packed breakfast. We were pedaling out of town by 6:15! Unfortunately this early exercise was to be doubled in intensity as the first 15 miles to Cerro Summit (already a good climb) was in a strong headwind. Later, as we crested the second steep summit of the morning, Blue Mesa Summit, we picked up an increasing tailwind as if the weather was apologizing and wished to make up for the rough start. We ate...
