Nov 28, 2007 - Garden of the Gods, Corlorado Springs

Garden of the Gods is a unique city park which offers spectacular views of the famous, frequently photographed, red rock formations. This gnarled, twisted and warped red sandstone rockery was lifted up at the same time as the surrounding Rocky Mountains (around 65 million years ago). Over time they have been eroded into finely balanced overhangs, jagged pinnacles, massive pedestals and mushroom formations. We started at the trading post entrance to the park where there was the Balancing rock formation. We then took the Siamese Twins Trail a...

Nov 12, 2007 - Rocky Mountains, CO

Well, we are officially out of the Southwest! Today was the first day of heading north and wow, what a difference! We drove out of New Mexico and into Colorado. Almost instantly clouds covered the sun, the air became cooler, and the trees got taller and greener. We drove about halfway through the state to a place called Colorado Springs, one of the older cities in Colorado. We found a quick place to stay the night and in the morning we'll be heading farther north. Keep your fingers crossed for the weather!

Oct 26, 2007 - Colorado Springs

Update 10/26/2007 We left Estes Park last Saturday and drove down to Colorado Springs. The trip was quite windy with a strong cross wind the whole way. There were several fender benders that kept the speed down in the 30's. Made for a long trip but the wind is not as noticeable at those speeds. At any rate we made it with little trouble. The temp hit 80's and it was very comfortable. That evening things did change. Sunday was a lousey day. We got up to 3 to 4 inches of snow and the temps were down around 20. We did not do much that day. I...

Oct 23, 2007 - A Detour to Colorado Springs

It was time to leave Crested Butte, and I did so somewhat reluctantly. I had planned to head southeast to Great Sand Dunes National Park today, but I ran out of moisturizer in the morning and needed to go searching for more. Of course, I'm still using skin care products that I can only find at department stores or on-line - no drug store products for me! On-line ordering was not an option since I didn't have an address, so I tracked down the nearest department store, which was in Colorado Springs. I like Colorado Springs and have visited...

Oct 16, 2007 - Garden of the Gods

The weather is definitely getting colder the further North and the higher in altitude I go. I took the scenic route today - which I am still not sure was a good idea. I drove for 6 hours to get here, and felt really worn out driving, though that may have been partly the lack of oxygen. Much of the route was above the snowline, over 10,000 feet at times. Some great scenery though, I am definitely in the Rocky Mountains now. I went through lots of ski areas that haven't quite started their season yet (e.g. Aspen). On the way I realised that...

Oct 14, 2007 - Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs was a welcome relief - civilization, after camping in towns time passed by in Kansas, beautiful mountains and outdoor activities right at our doorstep. Nevermind that Co Springs is a bastion of conservatism. We cycled and hiked through Garden of the Gods state park. Cycled to downtown along miles of bike paths. Had a fantastic lunch at a brew pub, then went upstairs, had a beer and played pool for as long as we cared - for next to nothing. What a deal. After several days of Kansas and Missouri, the peaks of the Rockies were...

Oct 13, 2007 - Mountaindale

After a long haul through 12 states in less than a month, we're looking forward to staying put for a while. We can't afford to move around this much. We need the lower rates provided by weekly or monthly stays, and to spend less in fuel. We want to SAVE money doing this, not spend it all. It's also nice to be back in an area we really enjoy; especially the church. Hopefully the weather won't be too bad. We're south of town, lower in elevation, and no where near the Palmer Divide and Black Forest where we lived last winter (and got buried...

Sep 29, 2007 - Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods was really neat. I wanted to hike more, but we were in a hurry after we watched the movie. The movie told the history of Garden of the Gods. The mountains were formed some millions of years ago, and then they got buried and now they are sticking out again. We also stopped at Ft Carson, CO to see the museum, but it had burnt several years ago. We stopped for pizza on the way home, and they didn't even have a game room.

Sep 11, 2007 - Colorado Springs

From Missoula it was a cannonball run to Colorado Springs, a 1150 mile jaunt done in one 16 hour shot. At one point I got a little tired and stopped at a truck station for a break. I was parked behind a trucker and had a brilliant idea to save gas and catch a nap at the same time. So using bungee chords I tied my little Geo to the back of the semi and had him unknowingly drag me 500 miles down the interstate before he noticed. Or wait, that might have been one of the dreams that I had while I was nodding off at the wheel. Either way,...

Sep 7, 2007 - Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Carla here—we're at the Air Force Academy campground. We have a great site with a road on one side and no one on the other. # We're also having great weather—40s at night, 70s during the day. We'll be here until September 21 when we're moving on to Wichita, Kansas for the Heavy Duty Truck Rally. September 22-24 I'll be taking Shelby and Gage back home and picking up Weston (leaving Pete & the dogs in Wichita with the 5th wheel = saves gas!). While we're here we plan on seeing the Air Force Academy, Pike's Peak, the Manitou Cliff Dwellings,...

Jul 8, 2007 - Colorado Springs, CO

7/5/07 Golden, CO to Falcon, CO - We drove to Colorado Springs and set up in a very basic campground in Falcon, CO. We were spoiled after all the amenities of Dakota Ridge in Golden. At least we had a full hook up (water, electricity and sewer). Went out to Marie Jackson's house to meet up with all the Jackson and Wannamaker families here for the wedding on Saturday. 7/6/07 Went to Garden of the Gods with friends Dave and Lora Riopel. Gardens are actually huge rocks not flowers. Hiked through some of the rock formations and took lots of...

Jul 7, 2007 - Denver and on to Colorado Springs

We are moving into the back stretch as we make our way home. We had difficulty finding a camping location in the Denver area. Most of the parks had sold their property because of rising land values. We stayed at a fairly nice park in Golden Colorado, although they seem to enjoy menu pricing. (cable, wi-fi, 50 amp all extra). We got an early jump to our Denver walk. The walk started on the 16th street mall. Overall the downtown area was very clean. This walk also brought back memories for Suanne who had grown up in the Denver area. Rather...
