Jul 14, 2017 - Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods & Old Town Colorado City

We had a leisurely start to our day, beginning with coffee beside the outdoor propane fire pit. This is a fairly new hostess (we're her 4th guests) and so she's still finding her way. Her current way involves telling us to help ourselves to anything in the kitchen, making me wonder if she remembers there's both wine and cheese in there? enjoy the fire pit and downstairs tv, use the laundry as much as we need, leave the door unlocked so we don't have to walk all the way around the house when we return. I'm betting she'll tighten up her rules...

Road Trip 2017

Jul 13, 2017 - Colorado Springs

Today was pretty much a head's down driving day. I've gotten spoiled by 2 to 4 hour drives and today's was 5 and a half. That was the estimated time before the side trip to Placitas and the driving rain and I swear fording creeks that turned the last hour of the drive into the last hour and a half to two of the drive. We took the side trip to Placitas because Ron had spent time there with friends when he lived here previously and because the commune there had been prominent in yesterday's "Voices of the CounterCulture" exhibit. It was...

Jul 11, 2017 - National Museum of World War II Aviation

Today our adventure included a visit to the National Museum of World War II Aviation. Opened in 2012, the museum showcases the role that military aviation played in the emergence of the United States as a world power during WW2. The museum has over 25 aircraft on display. Most are still capable of flight and participate in air shows. Some are "projects" that do not fly and are static displays. All of the aircraft are privately owned and are on loan to the museum. Some of aircraft were dug up from places where they crashed. Others were...

Jul 10, 2017 - Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

We opted to go to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo today since The Weather Channel is predicting a 50% chance of rain tomorrow. The Zoo was founded in 1926 by a philanthropist Spencer Penros to house his collection of exotic animals. In 1938, the zoo was transferred to the city through a trust. The zoo is encompassed on 140 acres and is promoted as America's only mountainside zoo. It seems like nearly every time we visit a zoo, several exhibits are closed or missing, under reconstruction or on loan to another zoo, or whatever. The hippos and...

Jul 8, 2017 - Cadet Chapel and the Air and Space Museum

We have friends, Richard and Lois Smith, visiting us from Amarillo. As a retired sailor, I can sponsor a guest for a short period of time to visit and stay on the base. I was able to arrange for them to rent an RV here on the base. Today, we decided to check out the Cadet Chapel on the grounds of the Academy. The first stop was at the visitor center. Here we saw a short video giving a basic overview of the Air Force Cadet's four years at the Academy. Then we walked over to the Chapel. The Cadet Chapel was completed in 1962 at a cost of 3.5...

Jul 7, 2017 - Seven Bridges Trail

Today we went to North Cheyenne Canon Park in Colorado Springs. There are several trails so we decided on the Seven Bridges Trail - so named because there are seven bridges that cross the stream along the trail. The hike is rated as "moderate" and is about 3.8 miles with an elevation change of about 1115 feet.

Jun 29, 2017 - Helen Hunt Falls, Colorado Springs

Today we visited Helen Hunt Falls in North Cheyenne Canyon. It is named for Helen Hunt Jackson (1830 - 1885), a noted poet, novelist, travel writer and American Indian activist. Her peers included Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson and Ralph Waldo Emerson. She wrote a novel called Ramona which has been adapted into a play that has been performed annually since 1923 in Hemet, California. The falls only have a drop of 36 feet, so it is small compared to others posted in the journal. But, you gets what you pay for! There was a second...

Jun 22, 2017 - USAF Academy, Colorado Springs, CO

We pulled up stakes on Monday, June 19th and drove 79 miles north to the United States Air Force Academy. This makes the 3rd or 4th time we have stayed here. So far we have done laundry, got the oil changed on the truck, bought some groceries, found where I am to get my PET Scan, and a located a church to visit Sunday. Can't play all the time. We did manage to hike a 2.25 mile route near the campground. The trail we walked on is part of the Santa Fe Regional Trail. It is a 14 mile path that follows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad...

Jun 21, 2017 - Colorado springs

Before we left Minooka cg this morning, we walked about 2 miles since we knew we'd be in the truck all day. 375 miles later we stopped in Colorado springs for the night and ate at BJ'S brewery where we had a great pizza and ipa. We're boondocking at Lowe's since most everything else is full. We can see pikes peak out the window still with some snow on it.Hopefully we won't hear a knock on the door at 2 am although the Lowe's rep said technically it was a public lot!

May 6, 2017 - The Notification

I was just playing with the neighborhood posse planning our summer when out of the blue my parents notify me we are going on a grand (old person code word for lame) summer adventure to the east coast of the united states. Even worse they told me I am going to miss the only day of school that I like. The last day! On the last day of school, no homework, no tests…just a party. So, all I know for sure is that I am going to miss a party and not going to get to play with my friends this summer.

Jan 24, 2017 - Meeting Up With Friends In Colorado Springs

We finally arrived in Denver station 2.45am after spending 20 minutes outside the station turning the train so that we could reverse in. What a joy to see Geo there waiting for us we left the platform some eight hours behind our scheduled time. Fortunately the roads were nice & quiet at that time so in just over an hour we were safely back at Geo & Heidi’s house in Colorado Springs about fifty five miles South of Denver. We did get a few hours sleep after falling into bed at 4am but once it lightened up outside we soon woke up. We got the...
