Jul 21, 2014 - Clifton, CO 7/21/14

Mike and Kathy came over for supper last night. I made a stew in my slow cooker, so we had that with fresh steamed green beans and bread. Right before they came, the clouds showed up to cool everything down a bit, so we were able to eat outside at the picnic table provided for each campground site. They brought us some fresh Palisade peaches and peach salsa. Yum! I chopped up most of those peaches this afternoon, and made a peach crisp for dessert tonight, while Mike and Bill have wandered off to do guy things for a while. I’m taking...

Jul 20, 2014 - Clifton, CO 7/20/14

We drove from Montrose to Clifton (about 75 miles) on Friday. We passed through Olathe, and I’m here to report that the Olathe corn is just starting to tassel, so it won’t be long before it’s in the stores! Best corn in the world! We’ve stayed at this campground many times. It’s an old KOA that needs a facelift and wider sites and aisles, but it’s only about 10 minutes away from our friends. We had a great dinner at a Mexican restaurant with them Friday night. Yesterday, we all went up to the Grand Mesa National Park. The entrance is on...

May 20, 2011 - Clifton, Colorado

Today is a travel day with the goal to get to Grand Junction, Co. We no longer got on the road and it started raining again. We stopped in Moab, Utah for breakfast and soon realized it was a great town for outdoor adventurers. Arches National Park is beautiful and has a great bike trail for bicycle enthusiasts. We had a 30 minute break with some sunshine leaving Arches National park area and then more rain and wind as we headed to Grand Junction on HWY I-70. This is the first interstate highway we have been on since leaving home. Another 30...

Jun 1, 2010 - Red, White...and Black!

For some unknown reason, I had a terrible time falling asleep last night. It seemed like it was just nonstop tossing and turning for hours when all of a sudden, Baxter went up to Don's window, looked outside and started growling. We didn't see anything, but he kept making noise. I heard an unusual noise that almost sounded like a large animal's hooves on the pavement, but Don didn't hear it. We tried to settle Baxter, but when I rolled over, I heard a noise again. At that time, Don heard it also. The noise was coming from my side this time...

May 24, 2010 - A White Monday

Yesterday looked like it was going to be a nice day - until early afternoon when the power went out in the park. Then the wind started to blow and the rain started pouring out of the sky! A mom with two young daughters had gone out in a paddleboat before it all started, but by the time they got back to the dock, they were wet and cold. Then I got a weather alert on my phone. A winter weather advisory was in effect for Monday. We could get several inches of snow. I shared the news with several campers as they passed through the booth and...

May 4, 2010 - Blowing in the Wind

Today was finally the day that we began our last leg of the return trip to Utah. After delaying our departure from Cherry Creek State Park several days due to snowstorms in the canyon, we were able to leave under sunny skies and warm temps. The wind was picking up, however, and a local channel was advising of wind warnings throughout the day. The foothills had already reported gusts up to 80 mph. Great - just what we need! It was 10:08 when we left and by the time we got to Glenwood Springs, 3 1/2 hours and 172 miles had passed. I took...
