Sep 25, 2015 - Central City, CO

Left Estes Park and drove the scenic Hwy 7, 72, 119 south towards Central City, CO. The stretch of highway from Estes Park to Nederland was something else…golden Aspen trees dotting the mountain sides and in the valleys. This is the time for fall colors (golden Aspen) in Colorado. Al and I thought we were in the prime fall color season for Aspens. Lot of yellow quaking colors with a few sprinkling of orange and brown. Such a pretty drive. We lunched at Black Forest Restaurant in Nederland. This was a German restaurant so of course I had...

Jun 30, 2015 - Boulder... no, Golden.

Tuesday June 30, 2015 We planned on going to Boulder today, but ended up spending the day in Golden Colorado instead. We saw the quilt museum (smaller than expected), a quilt shop (unexpected), Yelp came to the rescue yet again and suggested a great Nepalese restaurant for lunch. As a byproduct of walking to lunch, we came across an exhibition of the works of Ansel Adams. This is one of the great things about our vacation. We can often just stop and take advantage of these opportunities as they come up. We went to the Coors brewery tour....

Jun 29, 2015 - The Mile High City

Monday June 29, 2015 For our Denver day, we start out at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. It is pretty neat, and free. It is right off interstate 70, so there is no excuse to miss it. When there isn’t a concert actively in progress, it is used as an exercise ground. Picture Rocky going up and down the steps in Philadelphia, but younger, cuter, and with more spandex. Definitely a place for the fit people to see, and be seen. Then we had a bunch of errands to run. You know, life does still require visits to Costco, the dollar store, and REI even...

Jun 28, 2015 - Shhhhh. We are hunting campgrounds...

Sunday June 28, 2015 Today we are leaving our stay in Estes Park. It is Sunday, people should be going back to their homes and leaving us with plenty of space to camp right? Wrong. We are driving down to Denver and Mary-Jeanine is calling campground after campground. No, all full up is the answer. Apparently Coloradans spend their entire summers camping and hogging up our campgrounds. The attitude can be summed up in a bumper snicker I saw… “I’ve run out of sick days so I’m calling in dead”. The great campground hunt, end up in Central...

Jul 1, 2014 - Last One Central City

This will be out last update from Central City. We enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely return. We will be making one more stop in the awesome state of Colorado before heading to Nebraska. We love the state of Colorado, it is now second on our favorites list after Alaska. A month spent near Rocky Mountain National Park sealed the deal for us. The wildlife and the massive mountains are hard to beat. The only complaint we have about the area is the high elevations. We have both been feeling the difference in breathing, especially...

Jun 25, 2014 - Central City, Colorado

We left Grand Lake this morning and drove about 120 miles to Central City, Colorado. We wanted to be closer to Denver to take Vickie and Sam to the airport in the morning. The drive took us over Loveland Pass and through the long tunnel. Sam enjoyed driving through the tunnel and getting grandpa to blow the horn. The drive was a pretty easy one, we arrived in Central City in the early afternoon. We are all set up for the next week at a nice campground with great Wi-Fi...YIPPEE! Now I can start the catch up and finish all the journals from...

Today we go to Rocky Mountain National Park, Lake Brainard, Estes Park and drive through Boulder. Lake Brainard is closed to traffic because of the late snow and still has remnants of snow, but we hike into it about a mile. Weather: High, 51; Low, 39 Campground: Central City KOA

Jun 12, 2014 - Central City, Colorado

Today we took a shopping trip to Central City and Idaho Springs. I bought a T-shirt (see photo of logo - Camping Chick). We took a back road to Central City - a narrow dirt road you can tell from the picture is a real challenge. Fortunately, we did not have the motorhomes. Marsha took us in her car. Weather: High, 48; Low, 32 Campground: Central City KOA

Jun 11, 2014 - Central City, Colorado

Sharon and I traveled across Kansas yesterday and stayed at the Fairgrounds campground in Colby, Kansas. Nothing to write home about, but reasonable. Marsha and Susan had vehicle trouble and joined us in Central City, Colorado, later in the day. Today we are in Central City, Colorado, at the KOA Campground. It’s a beautiful campground with views of the Colorado Mountains. The weather is cool - 43 degrees the first night! There are six of us - Catherine and JoBeth, Sharon, Marsha, Susan and me in four motorhomes. Weather: High, 46; Low,...

Jul 3, 2013 - A Fast & Quick Look At Central City

From West Denver KOA Kampground – Central City, CO Sometimes spur of the moment changes in plans bring unexpected finds that add to your adventure discoveries traveling across this country. Leaving Montrose a few days early and stopping here in Central City was one of those times. This tiny historical mining town overflows with the history of being known as the “Richest Square Mile on Earth”. It was in May of 1859 that two gold seekers from Georgia made their loade discoveries on the same day just 2 miles apart in what is today Gilpin...
