Jun 19, 2010 - Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, CO

Hi All, We are back to camping as I am now able to get around with a cane and with new stairs for the camper I am able to get into and out of the camper :) We went last week to Cheyenne Mountain State Park, near Colorado Springs, but I forgot the camera so no pictures of that trip. This trip was 200 miles West along Hwy 50 to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison River National Park. We had a wonderful time at both outings. Hope you like the pictures. Love to All, Jon & Betty + R&B

Jun 15, 2010 - Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City

June 15, 2010. We had the best weather of the past week today so we decided to visit the Abbey in Canon City. The structure is very much out of character with the rest of this old, western town but would not look the least bit out of place in England or Scotland. Ground was broken by a Benedictine Order from Pennsylvania in 1925 and it was later named Holy Cross Abbey. The Vatican approved a budget of $500,000. The Abbey was completed and dedicated in April of 1926. (How did the Vatican even know or care about this remote abbey?) It was at...

Jun 14, 2010 - Royal Gorge, CO

Monday, June 14, 2010. Headed out toward the Royal Gorge and stopped at the mini train station because we were told it would take us out to a viewing point where we could see the bridge over the gorge. It is the highest suspension bridge in the world hovering at 1059 feet above the river.

Jun 10, 2010 - Canon City, CO

Wednesday, June 09, 2010. A very short, 50 mile drive to a campground 9 miles west of Canon City, CO. We’ll stay here for at least 4 days because the campground isn’t much. But it’s close to the few attractions we want to see. The campground is Fort Gorge and we picked it because it’s in RPI and gives us a 50% discount. But it’s poorly organized, looks rundown and the showers are dark, small and require tokens. It’s also for sale which explains why it looks like it’s not cared for any more. Thursday, June 10, 2010. Canon City is looking...

May 25, 2010 - It's almost Summer

Hi All, We have added a Pergola (Patio Cover) to our back patio. It's very nice to sit in the shade and look at the Hog back hills behind our house. As we mentioned last month, we planted three Colorado Spruce trees in our rocks behind the house. We decided to name the trees after our Grand Children; Christopher, Kelsey & Riley. Looking forward to full Summer. Love to All, Jon & Betty + R&B

Apr 23, 2010 - Spring time in Canon City, CO

Hi All, We are enjoying the Spring time here in Canon City, CO. We planted some Colorado Blue Spruce trees in our yard to keep the rocks company. Lots of flowering tree around town and the grass is green and growing. We made a trip West along the Arkansas River to see the snow on the high mountains and a few fishermen along the river. My legs are still numb with little change, I guess it's going to take alot more time for my nerves to heal themselves. Otherwise I'm feeling just fine "from the waste up". As you can see Betty and her dogs...

Mar 25, 2010 - Misc. Winter in Canon City

Hi All, I haven't posted anything for some time as we haven't done any travels since all the back problems started the end of last year. I did finally have surgery last February at the University of Colorado Hospital. I did indeed have a fracture in my spine at the T-9 vertebrate. This caused pressure on my spinal column pinching down on nerves that caused the numbness in my legs and feet. The surgery has stabilized my spine so there is no danger of further damage. It's a matter of time and patients to see how long it will take the spinal...

Oct 16, 2009 - More Fall Colors

Hi All, We decided to take another dirt road trip into the mountains close to home. The dirt roads are well maintained here in Colorado and really give a great opportunity to see the back country. We had some cold weather last week that knocked many of the fall color leaves off the trees, but still found some color inside this beautiful "Phantom Canyon". Betty enjoyed the trip as it ends at the small mountain town of Cripple Creek where gambling is legal. Many nice casinos along the old main street with penny slots. I lost $5 but Betty won...

Oct 7, 2009 - Early Fall in Colorado

Hi All, We are enjoying the early Fall colors. Should be even better next month. I'm finally scheduled for Monday to get the MRI on my back to help identify why I'm having numbness in both my legs. Pray that they find the problem. I'm not in any pain as my Chiropractor has fixed my back, but there is obvious nerve damage that needs to be addressed. Because of the nerve damage I don't have much strength in my legs for climbing in and out of our camper, so we have not been out at all since Doug & Tina's wedding in July. I can drive the car...

Sep 8, 2009 - Labor Day Weekend Trip - Arkansas River

Hi All, We have been taking many day trips into the mountains around Canon City. There are several mountain dirt trails leading over narrow stream lined canyons and up into the pine forests. Our 4 wheel Toyota Four Runner has been ideal for these outings. I kept forgetting to take the camera except for our last trip up the Arkansas River Canyon. It's really beautiful country around our home here in Canon City. Hope you enjoy the pic's. Love to All, Jon & Betty + R&B

Aug 27, 2009 - The Royal Gorge Bridge

Today we traveled to the Royal Gorge located near Canon City,Colorado. The drive took just over 1 hour, but was not tiring in the least. A few small hills, then a steep climb to the top of the gorge. John did a great job, he didn't panic once, though he did complain of his fingers being sweaty. Once we arrived, we were charmed by the almost Swiss-like design of the welcome center . The centralized courtyard was anchored by a perpetual clock/calender that was powered by water. Beneath was and abundant array of glorious seasonal flowers. ...
