Sep 15, 2012 - Canon City

9/15 Busy Day today. In the morning we went for a 3 hour ATV ride in Texas Creek. We went with an outfit called “Play Dirty”. Our guide, Von (short for Yvonne) was great, and knew the area well. We learned the mountain range was named Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) by the Spaniards because sometimes when the sun sets the mountains turn blood red. My cousin, who lives about an hour from here at the base of the mountains said she has seen that happen. During the ride Von had us go up to a pine tree and smell it. First we thought she was...

Sep 10, 2012 - Garden City, KS to Canon City, Colorado

Started our day with a hot breakfast (at our Comfort Inn) on real china with real silverware! (typical service ware is paper and plastic) Went out to pack the car and, WOW, very odoriferous from all the cattle feedlots! Land around here is pretty flat, looking barren and arid. Can't imagine why anyone would want to live out here, unless you are going to raise cattle. This part of the journey is pretty boring, as the scenery is rather dull and very little sites of interest. However, we DID get to drive on the actual Santa Fe Trail as Route...

Jul 29, 2012 - Royal Gorge

We spent most of yesterday at Royal Gorge Bridge which goes over the Arkansas River which cut the gorge over millions of years. Located about 30 minutes from our campground, it is owned by the city of Canon City. The bridge was built in 1929 as a tourist attraction. Jerry had been there more than 40 years ago and so, of course, there are lots of changes since then. They have added many things including an aerial tram, something called a skycoaster and a zip line. There are shows for all ages and a chance to go down to the Arkansas River via...

RV Trip Summer 2012

Jul 23, 2012 - Off the Beaten Path

Being retired and traveling is very different than traveling as part of work or on a one or two week vacation. We have TIME - time to explore the road less traveled. We did that today. We stopped at the Visitor's Center in Canon City to get directions to Red Canyon Park and Skyline Drive. I found these places in the two guides I am using. Red Canyon is like a mini Garden of the Gods. We drove north on a road out of town and into rugged terrain with a few ranches here and there. We actually missed the sign for the park and went about four...

RV Trip Summer 2012

Dec 25, 2011 - Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

We had another one of those "WOWSER" days today. We visited the Royal Gorge Park and Bridge in Canon City. The Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the world's highest suspension bridges hanging over the Arkansas River. You are actually allowed to drive your car across the bridge. We were a bit scared at first. We are glad we did it NOW, after we are home and safe. :-) The view was incredible. The price to get into the park was $25 each, we got our tickets on the Radio Shopping Show for only $7 each. We really enjoyed the Wapiti Wildlife Park....

Nov 22, 2011 - Skyline Drive

We went exploring again today. Our first stop was in Canon City at the Chamber of Congress. It is located in a beautiful old Peabody House. We picked up a lot of brochures and information about the area. We were told not to miss Skyline Drive. It was built by the local prisoners in 1905. There are 13 prison in the area. It was a fun drive with great views of the city below. Here is a paste of information: In 1905 Skyline Drive was completed through the use of inmate labor. At the height of construction, the Skyline Drive project employed...

Sep 1, 2011 - Hot Springs and Whitewater...

August 29 – September 1 Our next adventure involved soaking in hot springs and riding whitewater rapids. To get from here to there we started with an early drive through more magnificent countryside. This included driving through ski country and over mountain ranges 10,000ft up in sometimes heavy rain and watching the cloud banks roll over the mountains. After stopping for breakfast the drive continued south past giant 14,000ft mountains. Not just 1 or 2, loads of them. The stretch of road from Frisco to Poncho Springs is known as the...

Jun 19, 2011 - Royal Gorge, CO

Well, we seemed to have missed the entrance to the Royal Gorge but I found this road that had an old sign saying to the Royal Gorge. Seems we came in the back way and we are very happy we did as it was a beautiful drive. We kept wondering if we were on a private road especially when it went to gravel only. Vonna loved the trees on the way and the road was winding and interesting. About the time we were ready to turn around we came upon the back gate entry. Since it was Fathers Day, I was free YEA!!! So the Royal Gorge Bridge is supposed to...

Jun 14, 2011 - Royal Gorge from the Arkansas River

The captions pretty well tell the story of our day. Mrs. P begged us to take the triplets along. After 3 days cooped up in a box in the back of the vehicle we felt sorry for her... provided she took care of Baby P. Not sure how long I can deal with these critters. Mrs. P is talking about going much further west than we are planning to go. God only knows the outcome!
