Jun 9, 2018 - Good Travel Day

Even though we had planned a 5 ½ hour drive today we took our time preparing for the road. In spite of that we really had little to do to get ready and we pulled out of our RV Park at 8:00. The traffic was light to begin with and the drive was easy all day. We stopped in Russell, Kansas to fuel up and were quickly back on the road. In fact we were both feeling fine so Marilyn used her phone to find a nice little RV Park in Burlington, Colorado and we continued driving. We gained an hour when we crossed into the Mountain Time Zone and after...

May 29, 2017 - Lawrence, KS to Burlington, CO

May 29, 2017 Beautiful day to drive through KS. Not a cloud in the sky low 70’s and not too much wind. (They say a breeze in KS is 25mph). Staying at the BW. We gained an hour so Bob went to the pool and I worked out in the gym. 3 years ago when we were here we met a couple at the local “open restaurant” country club who invited us to tour their feedlot operation which we did. Since I don’t have too much to report I’ll share a bit from our 2014 blog. “Drove about 6 miles on dirt road to Penny Farm. Lynette was ready to drive us around and...

May 30, 2014 - Lawrence, KS to Burlington, CO

May 30, 2014 We drove into town and parked near South Park where there is a lovely gazebo (built in 1910) used for city band performances. Watkins National Bank (now a museum), built in 1883, was interesting. Walked up and down Massachusetts Avenue, the main part of Lawrence. The University of Kansas, the largest employer, had its beginnings soon after KS became a state in 1861 when provisions for a university were in the constitution. The school opened in 1865 with 55 students. (including the medical center there are about 28,000 students...

We left very early this morning, hoping to drive about 400 miles to Kansas. We ended up making only about 200 miles. The wind was horrible. We had to pull off the road and find a place to park until it calmed, about 6 hours later. We were pleasantly surprised to find the Kit Carson Fairgrounds in Burlington, Colorado for $10 a night, including 50 amp electric. It's nothing more than a parking lot, but it's right beside the historic Kit Carson Carousel. After doing a bit of research, I learned this carousel is one of nearly 4000 wooden...

Jun 17, 2012 - A Sunday Drive

Happy Father's Day!!!! We took it a little easy today. We hung out at our hotel until we had to check out at noon. Today was spent driving across Missouri and Kansas. The highlight of the day was traveling across Kansas...all the way across....all 421 miles of it. And yes, it was a highlight. It was absolutely beautiful! Yeah, it was pretty much all sparsely populated farmland but you have to see it. Just rolling hills as far as the eye can see and in the more western part of the state flat, flat, flat farmland as far as the eye can see. In...

Apr 3, 2012 - Burlington, CO

We got snowed on!!! How dare the Rocky Mountains get snow. This is first time Paul has had to drive in it since March of 2006. If Colorado keeps this up, we may not be back for awhile. We are staying in Burlington, CO tonight. It was 80 here the other day, but we fixed that - it's in the 30's with light snow now.

Jul 31, 2011 - Burlington

After 2 weeks of rest and relaxation, we are moving on. The elevation has really bothered Mom. Benji took us on our daily walks and we even got Mom up to 3000 steps per day. It was hard on her as Colorado Heights is far from level and after walking back UP to our site, she was wiped out. Today, we are not going far....Just to Burlington, Colorado. We are off to see a Carousel. We arrived in Burlington around Noon with plans to stay at the Kit Carson Fairgrounds. What I didn't know was that the Fair had just ended. Like today!!! We easily...

Jul 30, 2010 - Colorado Experiences

As we hooked up to leave Moab, Ed says, “Judie, we have a problem”. Never a good thing to say, you know. The electric tongue jack was not willing to lift up, and Ed diagnosed the problem as a gear failure, not an electrical failure. He jacked the trailer up (we were already connected to the truck), and removed the tongue jack. So, we were now on the way to Colorado! Ed did a little calling to RV parts stores in Grand Junction while the dogs and Judie visited the vet in Petsmart for routine medications and treats. The new electric jack...

Aug 19, 2009 - Siebert Colorado

Two weeks in Siebert Colorado After leaving Topeka we drove onto I 70 and if you have never travelled Kansas let me tell you the wind will knock you down. It was blowing in excess of 40 mph and we decided to pull into the Triple J campground in Russell Kansas. We found this park to be very clean and right off of the interstate. The staff was very helpful and this park features a mini-golf course. We stayed overnight and you should have seen us walking in these winds. Becky was nearly knocked off of the steps by the force of the door which...

The Nomadic Durrs

Nov 1, 2008 - Burlington, CO

Saturday, November 1, 2008 Burlington, COLORADO!!!! We had a very quiet night of sleep there in the middle of nowhere in Kansas. Actually, we were just about 20 miles to the east of Hutchinson where there is a Salt Mine that has been in business since the 1920’s. We called about a tour reservation and were told that they had tours leaving every 20 minutes. So…we stopped for Diesel…$2.89/gal (a record low so far!) and arrived with about 5 minutes till the next tour. It was not quite like the Salt Mine in Salzburg, Germany that we took when...
