Aug 31, 2017 - Aug. 29 Poudre River Canyon

Today was about two things, exploring the Poudre River Canyon and eating in a restaurant on Whole 30, oh and French press coffee. I've not mentioned but several times we've made plans to go explore or hike only to sit on the patio with our coffee until the cool, fresh morning air has been replaced with something akin to that lamp they use in diners to keep the plates hot before they're taken to the table. A word here about the coffee, we've run through our supply of k-cups and switched to the French press. Our first challenge was to find...

Aug 24, 2017 - Chautauqua

Today's adventure was to the Boulder Chautauqua. Making the adventure even more exciting was the fact that this was move in day for Colorado University, which is within walking distance of the park. I've seen far worse move in days in Knoxville, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville. This particular Chautauqua was started in 1898 and is the only one in continuous operation west of the Mississippi since the movement's heyday in the 1920's. This word and the institute associated with it were all new to me. As near as I can tell from the signs...

Aug 22, 2017 - Whole 30

There's not been much to report since my trip into Denver last Thursday. Most of the last days were spent either in preparation for the viewing of the eclipse or my beginning the Whole 30 food program on that same day. I've been gradually switching my diet over to being more Whole 30 like (no alcohol, dairy, grains, legumes, soy, peanuts and none of the uglier additives like msg, nitrites, etc), giving up my non-dairy creamer, cutting back on my Chardonnay and in general replacing the ever present pretzels and peanuts with more fruits. We...

Aug 22, 2017 - August 21 Eclipse

For someone (me) who had not known the path of the eclipse before committing to this sit, we ended up being in a pretty good spot. In Berthoud, Co we are about two and a half hours from where Totality was to occur. For the last week we've read articles, studied maps, watched the weather and located real time cameras along the main highways. Here in Berthoud, it was supposed to be around 95%. I don't remember being anywhere close to that before in my life. I also don't remember being very impressed with the eclipses that I have seen...

Aug 17, 2017 - Finally.... Denver

Yesterday was not my best trekking day. I'm not going to say that the beef at the PumpHouse Brewery was bad....but it was a very long night. I may have mentioned that I broke the charger for Ron's ipad? Well in my defense, technically I was the last one holding it before it appeared to break. Yesterday was our third attempt at finding a replacement charger. Our second stop (we'd done the dreaded Walmart visit the day before) was successful. So that problem is solved for now. But that's about all that happened yesterday. Today I drove into...

Aug 15, 2017 - Rocky Mountain National Park

Today was a back to Rocky Mountain National Park day. We decided to go early and to enter through the South entrance and hopefully encounter fewer people. We were on the road by 9:00a.m. having missed my intended departure time by about an hour, totally my issue. Because we were entering through the South, we drove through Lyons on the way. I had wanted to go to this little town because Ron had sent me an article about Wee Casa a resort made up entirely by little houses. According to the article it had been a trailer park that was wiped out...

Aug 13, 2017 - Day 2 & 3 of the Perseid Meteor Shower

I'm glad I got to see 3 "shooting" stars. But at this point, I'm thinking that's going to be it. I'm longing for the skies in Durango. I've not seen stars like those since I was a child or when I was duck hunting when I was still nearly a child. Ron reminds me that while the light pollution there was minimal, they're very likely experiencing the SW monsoons as well. That's means clouds and rain every afternoon and early evening. Last night was cloudy. I went to bed early with the idea that I'd get up when more lights were out and hopefully...

Aug 11, 2017 - Day 1 of the Perseid Meteor Shower

It was a low key day. A little cleaning, a little cooking and mostly waiting for the first night of the 3 night Perseid Meteor shower. The biggest issue of the day has been that the renters next door left their dog for nearly 7 hours in a crate. Don't get me wrong, that's not all that long for a crate trained dog. But this poor pup cried for the entire time. The saddest part was if we would make some noise like shutting a door or flushing a toilet, he would quit crying. Obviously, it's all about separation anxiety. The toughest part of this...

Aug 10, 2017 - Today's not done but I am

Somebody said, "Miscommunication is the root of all evil." Google doesn't seem to know who said it. Maybe no one did, but if not they should have. I swear this is my last whiny post re: this sit. The owner wrote to me a couple of weeks ago saying they had two new reservations for the other side of the house one for Aug. 4th and for 9/17. I took 9/17 to mean Sept. 17 and wrote back reminding her that we were leaving 9/8. There was no reply. So last night Ron and I were sitting and reading some time around 8:30 when we started hearing...

Road Trip 2017

Aug 9, 2017 - Aug 6-9th Catching up....

I'm finding it hard to journal these last days. Part of it I'm certain has been my lack of enthusiasm for the cold, rainy weather. I had signed up for 75 degrees with sunshine and low humidity. We've gotten two weeks of 95+ followed by ten days of 55-60. Oh, I get it, maybe that's what they meant by "average" temperature. Maybe I'm tired of the prolonged adventure, although I don't think so as I am very excited about the possibility (remote with all the clouds we're having?) of having great non light polluted skies for the Perseid meteor...

Aug 5, 2017 - August 4 - garden dining

One of the things that was appealing about this sit is that there is an organic vegetable garden and we are welcome to anything we'd like to eat, but are not expected to take care of it. I've avoided using it because the second day we were here the gardener came and stripped it of anything that was close to being ripe. He is a personable young 20 something, student and I figured he needed the garden to supplement his grocery budget. He is completing his course to become a Sous Chef and so I'm sure he makes good use of the veggies. But he's...

Road Trip 2017

Aug 3, 2017 - August 3rd

We started this Quest with the idea we would see as much of the West as possible, spending a large amount of the time with free lodging by providing house sitting and pet sitting services. Accordingly when we left Dunedin it was with the idea of returning mid to late Aug. I had sits lined up through mid July and figured we'd take a few more weeks to see the Grand Canyon, etc. But while we were in Houston this current 7 week sit became available and I interviewed. I've noted previously some of the mistakes and communication errors of this...
