Mar 18, 2008 - Hollywood - Ventura

We actually did get into Deal or No Deal taping, Howie Mandel and all. It was very interesting to see the behind the scenes action. We were the audience in a two hour special (Star Wars Theme) and winner take all (two contestants-whoever won the most received both amounts). We were there for about 5 hours, Bill really enjoyed it. We also went as close to the “Hollywood Sign” as possible and took some photos. It was really cool being right there. There is also talk that a realtor wants to buy the property it is on so it may not be there for...

Mar 14, 2008 - Ventura, CA

Well, we've just finished our two weeks of "school" in Ventura, CA, training for our new job. I've forgotten what it's like to have to be somewhere from 9:00 - 5:00 every day. But it's good practice for starting back to work. The town of Ventura is right on the ocean, and the Woodall's building has an ocean view. The building is surrounded by eucalyptus trees, and next door there's some kind of factory that makes citrus products, so there are trucks full of oranges parked all around. The smell of the eucalyptus combined with the oranges was...

Jan 15, 2008 - On to Ventura and it's thrift shops, through LA and ending in Indio

It must've been colder last night because the heat came on a few times throughout the night. I always turn the heat down low when I go to bed so the heater doesn't wake me up and I've been nice and warm under my flannel sheets with my sleeping bag on top. I opened up the shades a bit, and it was another beautiful day in Carpinteria. A few women were already up and enjoying their morning walk. Dog owners were up and about, too. I'm getting quicker at disconnecting and running through my checklist, which this time included backing off the...

Dec 27, 2007 - First Winter in the Desert

Before braving the LA traffic we stopped a few days at Ventura Beach and we knew we had arrived in Southern California...the weather was over 70 degrees and on the beach were dozens of surfers. We loaded up on the 3rd for a relatively short drive from Ventura to our next RV stop in Beaumont...right across greater metro Los Angeles. We awoke that day to rain (a seemingly rare event to the locals) and it rained the whole miserable drive to Beaumont. Billons of people on the road and seemingly none of them had ever driven in rain before. We...

Winter 2007

Dec 8, 2007 - California, Here I Come

I kicked the road trip back into gear today, departing for nine days in Southern California. Kevin joined me for the ride to Los Angeles, where I dropped him off. I was on my own once again. I have almost two weeks to travel until I depart for Baltimore on December 18 to spend Christmas with my mother. Until that time, I decided to explore parts of Southern California that I have never been to, including a few national parks. Since I'm trying to visit as many national parks as possible, I figured that this would be an ideal time to go to...

Oct 31, 2007 - Let the Journey Begin

Well after leaving Ventura, CA on 10/25/07 we are finally on our way. We made a brief stop in Marina Del Rey for some last minute boat repairs, earn our HAM licenses and off to Dana Point. We are now in San Diego, visiting our son Devon and taking care of the last few details before we leave the country. Our dear friends John and Cathy are now here with us. Tonight we will see Devon for the last time before our departure as we will shove off for Mexico in the a.m. Thanks to all our family and friends who have given us the love and support...

Jun 27, 2007 - Santa Barbara and Channel Islands National Park

I think I've shared with most of you that one of my retirement goals is to visit every national park in the contiguous 48 states (since the road to Hawaii is a little wet!!). Well, there is one park that I have decided to "compromise" on and that is Channel Islands National Park. The actual park consists of several islands that lie off the coast of Southern California. The only way to get to them is via. a boat trip. With the dogs, we would not be able to take the trip unless we boarded the dogs (which I refuse to do!). So, instead of...

Jun 17, 2007 - Get your motor running.....

After a lazy morning around the house, Stephan went on a short motorcycle ride with his Dad and Gretchen. They finished up some projects and then we all enjoyed some movies together. Gerda sent enough left overs home with us last night that we could continue to graze throughout the day.

Nov 4, 2006 - Bon Voyage party on the dock

WOW, what a great send off. Thanks to all of you so very much. Our trip out was a mixture of excitement and sadness. No one said it would be that difficult. We had an awesome sail all the way to Yellow Banks Anchorage at Santa Cruz Island. We spent two nights there, and then on to Cat Harbor, Catalina. We are there as of this posting. We had to power/ motor sail all the way here. It took about 9 hours. yep, me sitting still for 9 hours. I suppose I need to learn how to sit still huh? Our trip ended with a great escort in by two large...

Oct 24, 2006 - Santa Barbara, California

Our main reason for traveling to Santa Barbara was to meet Ryan's brother, Joe, who was visiting on business. We stayed in the dog-friendly but elegant Doubletree Hotel right in the middle of town on the coastal strip. The street, which is lined with towering palm trees, sits right above the golden beach. On the day of our arrival, artists filled the green park area with their paintings, sculptures and photographs. We walked through town and enjoyed a seafood lunch on the pier. We took Abby to the Santa Barbara Zoo on our second day in...

Sep 14, 2006 - Ronald Reagan Presential Library

Thursday, September 14, 2006 As we got ready to leave we tested the signal lights on the CRV but they did not work. This was a first for us! It turned out to be a cable that was not attached from the car to the motorhome. We were then on our way out of Santa Barbara at 10:30 am. We thought that we could drive onto South 101 down the street from our RV park but this was not the case. We drove onto North 101 and turned around at the Mission Street ramp. As we entered Ventura we got into the wrong lane and exited onto Highway 33. After a...
