Jun 22, 2016 - Stanislaus National Forest - Seeking Cooler Weather

(Ron Writing) We are waiting for a FedEx package to arrive at a FedEx store in Oakdale, CA, a little north of Turlock. It wasn’t there yet this morning so we had a little time to kill. After breakfast at home we went out for lunch to Latif’s, a restaurant that Lee had recommended last night. It’s sort of an old fashioned diner with great food, good prices, and a long history in Turlock. We both had the “senior dinner special”. Elena had turkey and dressing and I had ham. Both meals were more than we could eat and for only $6.99 each. Lee...

Jun 21, 2016 - Turlock, CA - Meeting an "Old Friend" For the First Time!

(Ron Writing) We spent most of the day at home. Elena baked a bunch of cookies. One of the reasons we wanted to stop and spend a little time in Turlock is to meet a “virtual friend” Lee and his wife Carlene. Lee has been reading our blog for several years and we’ve corresponded many times by email or cell. We stopped by to meet him back in 2012 when we were passing through Turlock but he was out of town at the time on vacation. This time we arranged in advance to make sure we came through when he would be home. Late this afternoon Lee and...

Jun 20, 2016 - Turlock, CA - Back to the Central Valley

(Ron Writing) Note to readers: We are way behind with the blog so note that this entry is for June 20. For the next few days we hope to post multiple entries to get caught-up. Just note the dates on each entry. We left Yosemite campground about 10 AM. We made one or two stops on the way out along North Side Drive to enjoy the sites and then drove Hwy 140 to Merced. Highway 140 follows the Merced River for much of this drive and we saw several white water rafters and kayakers as we drove right along the river. From Merced we drove north on...

May 22, 2011 - Turlock, CA - Heading North Through CA

(Ron Writing) We could have enjoyed staying awhile longer at Carrizo but the road north beckons. We left the campground after breakfast and headed northwest on Soda Lake Road to the north end of Carizzo Plain. As we drove along we saw at least 10 red tailed hawks perched on poles along the road. All along the way we had beautiful views of the Temblor Range across the valley. These interestingly sculpted mountains are formed from movements of the San Andreas Fault. Weren’t we brave spending May 21 right next to the biggest earthquake fault...

Apr 20, 2007 - Riverside, CA to Turlock, CA ~350 miles

I said my goodbye's to Lois at 8 AM and headed to I15, then North to I10, West to I5 and then North on I5 to Ca 99 and on to Turlock, CA. It rained all the way, very hard in places. The freeways around LA were so rough, one of my slide mirrors broke loose and fell to the floor. It didn't break, thankfully. However, when I stopped to get fuel, I dragged the tail end of the car hauler trailer going up the ramp into the station and it caught the wiring to the rear lights and shredded the harness in half. Also, one of the flex tubes from the...
