Oct 23, 2012 - Santa Barbara

Drove up to Santa Barbara today. As we get into central California I am starting to like California better. Santa Barbara is a beautiful town. Palm trees, the ocean, mountains, it is a picture post card, a quick look around lets you know why Oprah decided to build here. We had a late lunch at Brophy Brothers Seafood Restaurant. When John & Cor walked in they realized they had eaten there when they were on their trip 20 years ago. The food was fabulous and the view breathtaking. We liked our RV park, but it was 20 miles out of town, so we...

OK one word to describe Southern California – Yawn. Until you get to the coast, it is desert, ugly and a pain to drive. Once you’re on the coast, it’s a lot of little beach towns. We can see those in Florida, without the 3,000 mile drive. So SoCal is officially off my “gotta go back there list”. We are in Oceanside California. We went to a restaurant called Henesey’s for breakfast this morning. It’s a place Corrine & John went to when they were doing a motorcycle tour of the California coast, 20 years ago, for their 25th wedding annivery....

Apr 20, 2011 - Bakersfield, CA

After a nice few days in Laguna Niguel it was time to head north. Had to drive about 80 miles in Los Angeles traffic, I wasn't looking forward to that. But it wasn't too bad, only had some delays on 210 but for the rest it was heavy traffic but at least we were moving. Until we hit the Grapevine. Construction snarled all north bound traffic, so we stopped for fuel and lunch. After the delay, it was smooth (but still heavy traffic) to Bakersfield. Here, we found a very nice camp site to relax a bit. Tomorrow it is on to Sacramento.

Apr 17, 2011 - On to Laguna Niguel

Competed our stay at Pio Pico (San Diego) and started our trek north. Even though it is Sunday, there is lots of traffic but I'm sure less than on a work day. So we made it to our camp site in San Juan Capistrano, where we took the short drive to visit with our friends. Good to see our cruise mates again!

Feb 17, 2011 - San Juan Capistrano

Finally, on the 17th, we took a day to play tourist and drove the 45 miles to San Juan Capistrano to see the mission. If we had known “The King’s Speech” was showing there, we would have planned our day better and would have been able to do both. But, we saw the mission – such a beautiful and special place. It seems I've heard about the missions of California for most of my life. Since The Mission at San Juan Capistrano was so close, this was a good time to see it. The weather was another glorious day. Here it was in February and the...

Nov 23, 2010 - Mission San Juan Capistrano

We woke up to sunshine and mild temperatures and decided to head for Mission San Juan Capistrano which is only about a 45 minute drive from where we are staying. Traffic was busy but not outrageous. It is rather scary when the motorcycles drive between the lanes of cars on the highway and weave in and out of traffic. In California this is legal—what were they thinking when they made that law? San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra. It really reminded us of the old TV show “Cisco Kid” which would show some of the...

Driving down from San Dimas to San Diego was more of the same--freeways, freeways, freeways all the way. We tried to program Hal to stop at triple A along the way to get maps and info for Arizona, but even though Hal said she'd take us there, she didn't. Hmmm. And we were past the place, long past, before we realized she was being independent again. So we must learn more unassailable instructions for the future. We were able to wrest ourselves from her instructions and stop in San Juan Capistrano, however. It was there we had our first...
