Mar 14, 2004 - The Arrival!!

After all the waiting, and endless hours on the phone, Tina skipped into the Country without a hitch! The last couple of hours waiting at the San Francisco airport were the worst! We spent a couple of days in the City checking in with the governmet and seeing friends, and then made our way home to Arcata. There's alot to do! We have to settle into a new place, plan a wedding in two months, and I have to finish this semester. Busy, Busy, Busy!!!

Aug 30, 2003 - San Francisco

It was somehow exciting driving in to San Francisco. Its an immediately appealing city, built on huge hills, the roads crisscrossing at enormous gradients. It feels light and a little chilly with a sea mist shrouding the tops of buidings and the famous Golden Gate Bridge a lot of the time. We stayed at the Holiday Inn a few hundred yards from the main centre, and the main area for the city's vagrants. Joel was surprised to see poor peple in this obviously wealthy country. We shopped and went to restaurants and spent the US Labor Day down on...

Jul 5, 2003 - San Francisco, California

This was my birthday trip for Michelle. We stayed at a B&B in Haigh Asbury. The house was one of the focal points during the "summer of love" during the 60s, and it is proud of its tradition although today it is not nearly free. We met our friends Deanna and her great husband for dinner, then next day Steve (AKA "Rainman" long time ago on the Runnersworld online forum), a smart nice guy who happens to be a very good runner to run a trail race on Angel island. Between the good people, the tapas dinner, Dim Sum brunch, sailing the bay and...

Jun 10, 2002 - San Francisco, CA

Thought we were going to be with several friends in the Bay area over the weekend. Believe it or not, all the plans fell through! So, we looked at each other, and a map, and headed out. Spent a day in "the City" -- very much as we both remembered it. Had a nice respite at the St. Francis during "happy hour" at the Compass Rose Bar. A singer right out of the 40's, complete with suit and hat, singing great tunes. A tip on the cable cars - don't try to go from Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square -- a 1-2 hour wait in prime time -- go from town...

Jun 9, 2002 - Novato, CA

No trip to Northern California would be complete without a least 1 day in the Wine Country. Since we had been to Napa in years past, we decided to try the Sonoma Valley. Our plan was to go to the town of Sonoma, but were ready for a break at Healdsburg, and spent the day. Many of our favorite wineries are in this town -- Rodney Strong, Clos bu Bois, and Dry Creek, among others. Lunch from a deli, shopping, and 4 wineries made for a full day on our way to Novato. Oh, Phil made his first clothing purchase of the trip here, for those of you...

Jan 2, 2001 - 1973 February 10 – San Francisco - Visit with Cousin Mary Jo Holmgren

Today team mate, Jack Riney, took me to San Francisco and dropped me off at cousin Mary Jo Holmgren’s row house. Then he went on to explore elsewhere. Later he picked me up and we returned to San Mateo. This was the first time I had met Mary Jo. Her father (my Uncle Tom) had moved the family from Seagraves, Texas, to the San Antonio area when I was a baby, so I didn’t remember Mary Jo and her siblings. It was nice to meet her and her two children.
