Jun 7, 2016 - Cable Cars, Chinatown, a Submarine, and Ghirardelli

Our first mission today was to try to get into San Francisco earlier than we had the last two times on the ferry. We targeted the 10 o'clock ferry, but ended up running late. We left with 10 minutes to walk it, buy our tickets and board the ferry. Since it had taken up 10 minutes coming or going, we figured we would just take the next one...until we realized the next one was a full hour away. So...we jogged. We wanted exercise right? This on a balky knee and after walking 22,000 steps yesterday. (I'm shaking my head.) I had just been...

Jun 6, 2016 - Downtown and a surprise encounter

We set aside today to explore downtown San Francisco. After the ferry ride, we started out on foot heading up Market Street. I was looking for a relatively new shopping mall called Westfield. I knew the mall was somewhat of a hike, but since I wasn't sure of the cross street, we hesitated to get on a bus. Besides we both were ready for some exercise and boy did we get it. What we didn't know was Westfield looks like any other high rise buildings in downtown. The mall is built up rather than out. After quite a bit of walking (some of it...

Jun 5, 2016 - Ocean Beach

Today we went on a quest with Ranger to find a regular beach and perhaps get some decent pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. We thought we understood from the local weatherman that it would be foggy in the morning and perhaps clear out in the afternoon. Alas when we got to the bridge in mid-afternoon we realized any clearing that had gone on was over. We then drove to Ocean Beach which runs for several miles along the shore of San Francisco. We found the first parking lots, but they were completely full. So we kept driving and suddenly...

Jun 4, 2016 - Point Reyes National Seashore

The other day the lady in the office at our park suggested exploring the Point Reyes National Seashore. So today instead of going into the city, we took Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to Hwy. 1. This took us thru San Anselmo and Fairfax which are very quaint. We also went thru the Samuel P. Taylor State Park which gorgeous...extremely large trees line the road as it follows a small stream. At Olema, we turned onto Hwy. 1 then took a side road to the Bear Valley Visitor Center. There are several hiking trails here, but as usual since we had Ranger...

Jun 3, 2016 - Golden Gate Bridge and Walt Disney Museum

Today we decided to take Ranger with us to explore the area around the Golden Gate Bridge. We were hoping, of course, for some pictures of the bridge, but unfortunately what we got was fog. There were a few times we could see parts of the bridge, but usually when we moved into take pictures the fog was totally covering it. We did find a beach (which we have since learned is named Baker's Beach) so we found a parking place and slowly found our way down to the bottom. This is no easy feat since there are no real stairs. You have to pretty...

Jun 2, 2016 - Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf

Our first venture into San Francisco was a learning adventure. We took the footpath to the Golden Gate Ferry about 11am. The walk was true to the time estimate of 10 minutes and we were pleased to realize it did not entail huge hills. The ferry ride took about 35 minutes and was relatively smooth at least until about half way when we started bouncing on the waves. All in all though it was not a bad trip. The Ferry Building where we got off the ferry was filled with mostly restaurants all of which had long lines since it was lunch time. We...

Jun 1, 2016 - On to San Francisco

Today we drove up I5 to I580 and across to San Francisco. It was a bone-rattling experience I would not like to repeat. I don't understand why California is not maintaining its roads. Anyway during the drive when I wasn't being bounced around, I looked for reviews of our next RV park because when we booked they told us we would be in the mobile home park. That's not what it looked like from the website. We were planning a two week stay to give us time to truly explore the Bay Area. When I looked them up, I found lots of bad reviews mostly...

May 29, 2016 - Hangin Out in SF

I love San Francisco! I’ve been here quite a few times before but could never tire of this beautiful city. Of course it helps to have fabulous friends here. Patty and Gene have, as always, been great hosts. They have tolerated my OU softball obsession quite well and in return I have tried to be reasonably polite about Golden State’s two wins over the Thunder. We have walked in town, along the bluffs, and on the beach. Friday evening we enjoyed dinner at a Moroccan restaurant with some of their new friends. We all loved the food and...

May 27, 2016 - A walk along Land's End

I won't be writing much while visiting friends in San Francisco, but will try to post at least a few photos every day. These are from our walk from Patty's along the coast in Land's End park. Besides that we have enjoyed a restful day and watching JMU win in softball. OU is supposed to be on now but is delayed because of lightning in the area. Suzy says there are severe weather alerts on all the local tv channels so it could be a while. We are headed to a Moroccan restaurant for dinner - will be taping multiple channels and hoping to see...

May 26, 2016 - Pacifica to San Francisco and back day 2

Day two in San Francisco. We took the bus, BART, and Streetcar to the Hop on Hop Off bus this morning so we could catch the trolley to Sausalito. The sun was out this morning and it was warmer and less foggy so we got a better view of and on the Golden Gate Bridge. There was not a lot to see in Sausalito, other than they had what seemed to be miles of boats in the harbor. But we did get to go over the bridge for that and then again on the regular hop on hop off bus. The bus driver also drove us to a different part of the Golden Gate Park...

May 26, 2016 - A Tight Squeeze

I made it to San Francisco! The scenery changed quickly after I left Skip and Carol’s this morning. There were a few more of the very steep inclines and long downhill grades before I was out of the mountains, and then suddenly the valley stretched out before me. My chosen path into San Francisco took me through Merced. My cousin Susan lived there years ago and when I contacted her to say where I was, she told me I was only a few blocks from her former house. I had fun tracking it down and sending her a picture. Then I was headed onward and...

May 25, 2016 - Pacifica to San Francisco and back

Day one in San Francisco. What a beautiful city this is. San Francisco is built on hills, and they are very, very steep. We had a short walk (5 min) to the bus stop and took the bus to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Then we had a short walk to the F line Street Car to take us to Fisherman’s Wharf. We got a better deal on the Hop on hop off tour, than if we had booked it on line or over the phone. It was $45 for 48 hours. It included a night tour and a tour to Sausalito. From the bay, you have a good view of Alcatraz prison. There were tours...
