Jun 12, 2013 - Last day in San Diego

When we arrived in San Diego 2 weeks ago, we had a list of things we wanted to do. Some things we picked up on the Internet. Some things were suggested by friends who were familiar with the area. We have managed to do all of the things on our list but one. The last thing on our list was to take a harbor tour. We have left this ride on a cruise ship to last partly because Stan is still dealing with some inner ear issues from the sinus infection. With this being our last day we decided it was now or never. Then we found out the tours for...

Jun 11, 2013 - Getting Ready to Leave San Diego

Today we had to get organized to leave San Diego. Spent most of the day running around doing shopping. Whole Foods market, Ralph's and Trader Joe's (the DW loves their 2 buck chuck - $2.99 wine called Charles Shaw). By the time we were finished it was Happy Hour and we visited our neighbours, Ron and Bev, from St. Louis. We shared RV stories but theirs were better. They have destroyed a fifth wheel. Drove it under a low bridge and tore off the top. It was a write off and the rig was only six months old. Also dropped a fifth wheel on the...

Jun 10, 2013 - USS Midway

Our tour of the USS Midway was surprisingly educational. Probably the best part was the free audio tour. This recording was an excellent way to learn about life on an aircraft carrier. It included information concerning the different areas of the ship as well as interviews with sailors and aviators who had served on the Midway. We are no strangers to aircraft carriers. We have toured the USS Lexington twice...once in Pensacola and once in Corpus Christi. Stan also spent a week on the Abraham Lincoln on what is known as a Tiger Cruise when...

Jun 10, 2013 - Tour of the City and Hodad's for Dinner

The weather has cleared. No more marine layer in the morning. Skies are blue and temperature is 75 F. Decided to do the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Tour. Drove to San Diego Old Town, parked and got on the bus. Takes about 2 hours if you don't get off at any of the stops. If you get off it adds at least 1/2 half an hour to the tour. Buses run every 30 minutes. We stayed on the bus until it got to Coronado Island Ferry Dock. Coronado Island is not really an island but the locals refer to it as one. Used to be joined to the mainland by a thin...

Jun 9, 2013 - A Crisis Averted

Up early. Looks like another overcast morning but it usually clears by noon. Out for breakfast at The Broken Yoke Cafe. Huge portions. As I went to take out my credit card to pay for breakfast, oops, it wasn't there. Realized I probably left it at Phil's BBQ yesterday. Decided to phone from the trailer when we got home. Yep, they had it. Crisis averted although I don't think Marilyn will let me forget this blunder. I headed to the restaurant and Marilyn did laundry. Late lunch, big salad and then sat out on the waterfront for a couple of...

Jun 9, 2013 - Scenic Drive and Birch Aquarium

Today we decided to take the Scenic Drive up the coast to La Jolla. This included a stop at the Navy Pier where the USS Midway is docked. We were interested in exploring the area around the pier and will save the Midway tour for another day. Next to the Midway is a larger than life (around 30ft) statue of the WWII sailor kissing the nurse at the end of the war. It's remarkable. Next to that is a patio where a life-size statue of Bob Hope "entertains the troops" (about 15 statues of soldiers hanging on every word). His recorded voice plays...

Jun 8, 2013 - The "Moe" Tour

Moe picked us up at 10:00 AM and we were off to explore San Diego. First stop on the tour was Mount Soledad. Located on the north side of Mission Bay it gave us views north up the coast and inland to see where Moe and Linda live in University City. Could also see La Jolla (pronounced hoya) and La Jolla Cove. Down the mountain to La Jolla Cove and parked and walked along the ocean. Lots of people kayaking, swimming, body surfing and swimming. Good waves. Sea lions relaxing on the rocks and beach. Continuing south Moe had to show us a...

Jun 7, 2013 - Boat Tour of the Harbour

Friday morning was cloudy again. Moe and Linda came to visit with two of their grandchildren, Yannick and Leon. These are their son Dan's children. Hung around the trailer for a while and then Moe and Linda headed off to do the grand parent thing and Marilyn and I had lunch and headed for the harbor to go on a two hour boat tour. Missed the 1:45 PM tour so just hung around the harbor watching boats which is one of my favourite things to do.. Saw a private yacht called Luna which was 365' long and cost $1 000 000 000. That's billion. Started...

Jun 7, 2013 - Old Town San Diego

Today we trekked back to San Diego to tour Old Town. This area houses several buildings from the original town of San Diego. Some of theses buildings have been turned into museums like the Wells Fargo office and the original courthouse. Many others now house various shops and restaurants. One area was called the square. This area had an ice cream shop, two or three gift shops and a restaurant. We stopped for ice cream and to watch the "band" that had set up in the center of square. This musical duo played a guitar, Indian flute, and wind...

Jun 6, 2013 - Pacific Beach

Great sleep. We must have been tired after our drive from Las Vegas. Slept with the windows open and no AC. Overcast this morning and cool. This is what the day starts like in June in San Diego. A marine cloud cover moves inland a few miles at about 2:00 AM while you are sleeping and then moves out to sea around noon. The rest of the day is sunny. Already there is lots of action on the bay. Sea Doos, water skiing, wake boarding, sailing, fishing and boating. We spent the morning enjoying our view of the bay and getting caught up on stuff....
