Apr 21, 2013 - Wildlife Refuge
Today was great! We went to the Living Coast Discovery Center, a part of the San Diego Wildlife Refuge system. It was really more our sort of thing than the zoo. There is no parking on the refuge, but they run a shuttle bus every 15 minutes and it is only a 5 minute ride from the parking area to the visitor's center. There were lots of exhibits with sealife of various kinds—some of them quite beautiful like the lion fish. Went on a bird walk and saw quite a few that were new this trip. The refuge is hatching and releasing to the wild...

Apr 20, 2013 - San Diego Zoo
We spent most of the day at the San Diego Zoo amid the thousands of other people crammed into it. Much of our time was spent in two aviaries that were stocked with exotic birds from all over the world. We also took a bus ride around the park, passing well over half of the exhibits. We walked around in the maze of streets, trails, stairs, and up and down ramps, rode the “Skyfari” aerial tram from the front of the zoo clear across to the back side, walked some more past elephants and big cats, and wound up catching the “express” bus that goes...

Mar 25, 2013 - At Sea on our way to Los Angeles
March 25, 2013 The last day at sea Today is the last day of the voyage as we make our way to Los Angeles. It’s packing day. We arrive in Los Angeles early tomorrow morning. We have to have our bags packed and outside our cabin before dinner tonight. Embarking and disembarking the ship is the worst part; notwithstanding the airplane ride from SFO to Buenos Aires. The next post to this journal post will be when we arrive home tomorrow; or later depending on how I feel.

Mar 24, 2013 - Sightseeing - US Midway Aircraft Carrier
My first day sightseeing with John when we visited the San Diego Maritime Museum where there are a number of ships open for inspection. We got there around lunchtime which really didn’t give us enough time to see all the ships on display so we decided to just go on the US Midway which is a retired WWII aircraft carrier on permanent display with a great range of aircraft that flew off her over the years. It was a great experience however we only got halfway through a self conducted tour (via a digital player and headphones) which had some 80...

Mar 22, 2013 - Orlando to San Diego
We picked Jim and his family up at 4:30 AM to fly from Orlando to San Diego, CA. We rented a 12 passenger white van and drove to 3874 Riviera Drive. We rented a large beach front house there. Our delightful and helpful host, Noel Quintana, was there to greet us, show us around and explain the rules. The weather was absolutely gorgeous; the house was lovely though not quite as spacious as I anticipated and it was right on Mission Bay so the view was wonderful. As the day progressed, Alex, Richard and I went to Von’s to pick up the cake we...

Mar 22, 2013 - California Dreaming
What fun we are having in San Diego. It is so good to see Corinne again and we are spending a lot of time with her. She has been keeping us busy meeting her friends and taking us to a couple of parties, as well as working on her "Daddy Do" list, going to swap meets, and introducing us to her favorite international cuisines. We have met a lot of very nice people and helped one of them (Carlee) celebrate her birthday at a neat bar where we played ping pong and bar shuffleboard. They also had 3 pool tables and a dart board. Corinne is hosting...

Mar 19, 2013 - San Diego Area
Day 9 - March 13 Once again, we were up and at 'em early. The chow hall closed for breakfast at 7:30, so we were there by 7:20. El Centro Naval Air Facility trains a lot of British and Clark had a good talk with one young man as we were waiting in line for our omelets to be made. Back to the motor homes to begin the process of getting ready to travel. We were in no hurry, since our day's drive would be 89 miles. Off we went, choosing to take I-8 for about 40 miles and then we exited at Exit 65 and were on CA 94. Almost the first thing we...

Mar 17, 2013 - The Land of Palm Trees
John and I have reached a compromise this year. A couple of years ago, when we were on the beach near Santa Barbara, I wanted to head south to San Diego so that we could go to the zoo, etc. I have never been to San Diego or the zoo and it is on my Bucket List. At that time, we debated whether to endure the heavy traffic which John was dreading or just head to Las Vegas. That year, John and Vegas won. This year, a debate was on again as to whether we should return to Jalama Beach, which would mean traveling from Yuma across the Los Angeles...

Mar 15, 2013 - Hello Tutto Bene
Met Bronte and we moved aboard Tutto Bene We headed off to get some provisions and my first visit to an American Supermarket. I was fascinated by all the different grocery items and different names the Americans have for food items. I was looking for Muesli and wondered why I couldn't find any and discovered they call it Granola. Being so close to Mexico a lot packaging is bilingual and most public signage is also bilingual. Mexican/Spanish is a very common language heard spoken. We went to a restaurant for dinner and my first experience in...

Mar 14, 2013 - Cairns to San Diego
A good flight from Australia and arrived at The Vagabond Inn for one night before meeting Bronte who flew to Los Angeles and drove south to San Diego. I needed a US SIM card for my phone so I hopped on the free hotel Wifi and found a retailer in downtown San Diego and caught public transport into the city to get it. Shops are open till 9.00pm weeknights. The public transport is great in SD and the people are friendly when I can get them to understand my Aussie accent and me theirs. Most times I have no idea what they are saying and I am...
