Dec 24, 2012 - Christmas in Sacramento

Once we completed our seasonal employment at Amazon, we planned on spending Christmas week in Sacramento. Kit and Tami were driving from Tulsa, and Hannah had already spent a couple of days at Uncle Allen's apartment, so we just had to get over Donner Pass and get settled into the CalExpo RV park. Sounds easy enough. Welcome to the fun that is winter in the Sierra. We had a three hour window of beautiful sunshine, once the chain control had been lifted and the road dried out a bit. We were quite nervous about driving through the slush and...

Nov 27, 2012 - No Shortage Of Thrift Stores

Before meeting with Millie Ault and John Reiner for lunch at the Bucca De Beppo at the Galleria in Roseville we stopped off to catch up with the never ending laundry. Mary wasn't too pleased with her minestrone soup and salad but my lemon chicken was every bit as good as I remembered it to be. Sacramento has no shortage of thrift stores and we managed to stop at a couple more on the way home. Because it is supposed to be cold and wet in the morning I dumped the tanks, put up the water hoses and got the car hooked up this afternoon. So all I...

Nov 26, 2012 - Chasing The Mail Man

The post office tried to deliver my banjo strap Friday but the office was closed so they left a note saying it would be held at the post office for pick up. After stopping at two different post offices I was told in must be out for delivery, on my way to the Parts Center I seen a mail truck and sure enough he had my package but wouldn't give it to me so I had to go over to the office and wait. That little escapade ate up three hours of my morning. For lunch Mary made a killer lunch of breaded pork chops, baked potatoes and vegetables, tough...

Nov 25, 2012 - New Hobby

We Met Shane and Margarita at the Red Hawk Casino for lunch, we left a couple of hours later with a full tummy, money in our pockets and another club card to add to my collection. I've been collecting players club cards where ever we go with the intention of making a collage some day, should be colorful. Talked with Ranger Sandy at B-NVSP this afternoon to make sure it is ok to come in Wednesday afternoon and get a little more detail of our duties. Rain is in the forecast from Wednesday through next Monday so I guess I'll be getting wet...

Nov 24, 2012 - Leisure Day With Family

The Sacramento River is on one side of us and some ponds on the other so we have Canadian Honkers flying over every morning and evening. Myron, Donna, Shane and Margarida came out this morning, after going out to Brookfield's for lunch we ended up wandering through Denio's Flea Market. After a couple of hours walking up and down the isles I think the only thing we bought was some fruits and vegetables. My hands have been bothering me a lot lately and I'm not sure if it is because I've been putting in a lot of time with the banjo or the just...

Nov 22, 2012 - 49th Wedding Anniversary

Thanksgiving Day and I truly have much to be thankful for because today is also our 49th wedding anniversary, I can't believe she has put up with me all these many years. Shane and Margarita stopped by this morning with some home made snooker doodles and brownies for us on their way to Santa Cruz to spend the day with her Dad and family. When we at Cache Creek Casino the other day they gave us each a twenty five dollar food credit and twenty dollars free play for today so off to the casino we went. Twelve hours later after a very good meal...

Nov 21, 2012 - Appointment With Allen Hendricks

I had my first appointment with Allen Hendricks (www.allenhendricks.com) who is a local banjo maker, player and teacher for a tune up on my banjo and lesson. My banjo really sounds better and I got some good advice as well as some good practice tips. Mailed out a number of Christmas packages today. We had a fairly heavy rain most of the night last night that turned to a light drizzle for most of the day. I stayed home this evening while Mary was off to one of her old haunts, the Grand Oaks Bingo Center in Citrus Heights not far from where...

Nov 20, 2012 - Banjo Strap Problems

A few days back I ordered a new strap for my banjo to be shipped to the Trane Parts Center in Sacramento. I was there early this morning to pick it up then hurried back home anxious to put it on only to find out it won't fit my banjo. I got the ok to return this one and ordered another so I'll have to wait to see if that one will do the job. This afternoon we went up to Cache Creek Casino for a couple of hours, got a couple of coupons good for tomorrow and a few extra dollars in our pockets. The casino is about forty miles north east of...

Nov 19, 2012 - Back To The Geek Squad

Last night I was trying to download a coupon for Bucca De Beepo's and it ended up taking over my computer so I was off to the Geek Squad after dropping Mary off at the laundromat. After lunch we drove out to the Citrus Heights Wal-Mart and Sam's club so Mary could finish up her Christmas shopping. Later we stopped by our old house we sold in 2003 and were pleased to see how good it still looks today especially after seeing what our house in Madera looks like since we sold it 3 1/2 years ago.

Nov 18, 2012 - Try Again

Today we only have a 150 mile drive up hwy 99 to Sacramento, we will be parked at the Cal Expo RV Park. Mary drove the first eighty miles to Ripon where we planned to top off with fuel at the Flying J truck stop for $3.93 a gallon. When she got off the freeway Lily took her to the left instead of the right so she ended up back on the freeway headed back to Fresno so after getting off at the next exit and coming back again we made it into the Flying J ok. Pomegranate seeds are really good when added to my morning bowl of cereal.
