Sep 12, 2013 - Heading home

The roads into and out of Bull Bend are awful so we stayed put most of the time. Today we were supposed to meet Sally and Mike in Mount Shasta but Murray had a little mishap. About 20 miles out of La Pine his rig caught on fire. We fortunately were right by an abandoned gas station for a good place to pull over and the fire department was 3 minutes away so the damage was confined to the belly. But the wiring and pipes were destroyed and the odor in the trailer was sickening. So we went back to La Pine, Sally and Mike drove up there and...

Aug 4, 2013 - At Helena, Montana

We’ve made it to Helena, Montana as of this evening. We’re staying at an RV park outside of town, away from the noise of I-15. There’s a little breeze blowing and it’s about 80 degrees so pretty pleasant here in the shade. While traveling to Boise on Tuesday, we made an unexpected find—the grave of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. We had understood that the grave was in the area but that it was on private land and inaccessible. Jean Baptiste, or “Little Pomp” as he was affectionately called by William Clark, was the son of Sacajawea, the baby she...

Jul 31, 2013 - Jonathan and Mary--on the move again!

Dear Family and Friends—We are starting off on our next adventure tomorrow morning. To give you an overview: We’ll first head out to Fort Benton, Montana. At Fort Benton we’ll pack what we need in the kayaks, and start our 10-day trip down the Missouri River. This area is called the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument, and the river here is designated a National Wild and Scenic River. It’s an unpopulated and almost inaccessible 150 miles of the Missouri, traveled by Lewis and Clark on their trip out west as well on the return...

Jul 14, 2013 - Sacramento, CA

We couldn’t stay at Cal Expo because it was State Fair and there was no room at the inn. We were concerned about the Elks Lodge because they have only 12 sites but there were a few left. Supposedly you can only stay 2 weeks but the couple in the Alfa next door, John and Sue, were staying a month waiting for their house in Grass Valley to be ready. So there are ways around the system. This Elks Lodge has a pool and it was delightful on such a hot day. And I went to church at Our Lady of the Assumption. Very nice. In the few days we had in...

Jul 6, 2013 - Preparing for departure!

It's hard to believe that I am at the airport already but I am so ready for the experiences this adventure will surely bring! I am finally all packed up and have somehow managed to fit everything I will need for the next seven weeks into my large backpack and one carry-on bag. Today will be a long day of traveling and I won't make it to Costa Rica until approximately 7 pm. The VIDA volunteer project will provide me with more opportunities to gain invaluable hands-on experiences with surgeries and other veterinary practices. I am so excited...

May 12, 2013 - Home Again

Yesterday we followed the old Pony Express trail across Nevada. Last night we treated ourselves to prime rib dinner at the Steak House in Stockman’s Casino, in beautiful downtown Fallon, Nevada. We were celebrating the last night on the road for this trip. If either one of us had remembered it, we could have celebrated our anniversary, too, which is today. Seeing the beautiful Truckee River canyon with its ponderosa pines was a welcome change from the mostly desert environment we’ve been traveling through. It also helped ease the pain we...

May 10, 2013 - Sacramento for a week

We had intended to travel along the Columbia River on the Oregon side towards South Dakota. However, instead we did a quick trip to Sacramento. This allowed for another orthodontia appointment for Dan, a hair cut and color for me, a trip or two to our storage unit, and a visit with local family.

Apr 2, 2013 - A Very Nice Dinner And Visit

I played Chauffer for Mary and Margarida driving them around town to an endless line of thrift stores, the high spot for me was lunch at the Country Waffle Café for some of the cheapest and best tasting waffles I've had in awhile. Why are pancakes so much cheaper than waffles? While we were in Citrus Heights I dropped them off at Mary's favorite thrift store and I went over to SAS Shoes, a little pricey but hopefully they are worth it. Around 3:00 we went over Millie's for nice visit with her and her brother Rick who was down for a visit...

Apr 1, 2013 - The Big 66

Mary turns the big 66 today so we are going up to the Jackson Rancheria Resort and Casino. What would a side trip be without stopping at least one thrift store so we made an extended stop in Jackson. The Jackson Rancheria has been recently remodeled and expanded, we didn't stay long after lunch. On the way back to Sacramento we stopped at the Red Hawk Casino, it was almost midnight before we got home.

Jan 18, 2013 - Visiting with Friends

Day 5 Visiting with Friends One of my reasons for stopping in this vicinity was to catch up with a couple old (you can interpret that literally if you want!!) roommates from college, and a neighbor from the Fairview RV park who happens to be down here for the winter. Garen and Lydia were traveling through on their way to Incline Village, so we rendezvoused in Auburn. Had my first In and Out Burger – which is apparently a California icon. Then went to Roseville to see Mark (RV neighbor) and on to Sacramento for dinner with Jim. It just...
