Sep 9, 2014 - Still Blogging! Day 80 To Sacramento

We've had several requests to keep blogging, because we're still taking pictures along the way, so today's blog is a plea for all rain dancers to descend upon California. Last night we were in Kelsyville, CA and stayed at a nice place on a lake - Edgewater "Resort", located on Clear Lake. The big sign said no one could put a boat in the water there because it was no longer deep enough. One of the pics shows a white egret...notice the boat docks in the background. The lady there said the last measurable rainfall they had was over a year ago...

Jul 28, 2014 - Sacramento CA

Arriving in Sacramento, we were a little apprehensive that everything would work. The RV and truck had been sitting in storage for 9 months. Since there was no call from the storage facility manager, we assumed the truck would start. Richard connected the RV batteries and, voila, everything worked. We did however have to replace the smoke detector and clock batteries. Hitching up went like clockwork and the drive to Cal Expo was uneventful. Our favorite spot, 201, was ours for the month. And Mabel, the office cat came over to welcome us and...

Jun 18, 2014 - California Capitol

Still in California. Sacramento....finally made a stop where we are seeing water; actually a full lake with beach areas for swimming. This park is surrounded by groves of Walnut Trees. Since Texas it has been DRY with rivers and lakes that are low or completely dry. At this stop Miss Molly finally got her much needed haircut; went to Petsmart for the first time and they did a really nice job. They couldn't believe she was 16 years old. We found the Sacramento area to be very pet friendly in many ways; one of those being they allow you to...

Jun 7, 2014 - Sacramento, Ca

We left home yesterday at approximately 9:30 with our first stop being Sacramento which is approximately 60 miles. The Concord Caravaners were having their June outing at the KOA campground. We had a good outing although we only had 8 members and our daughter Brenda who joined us for 1night. Today we spent the majority of the day visiting and waiting for the Belmont Stakes horse race. Unfortunately our California horse did not win. The weather is in the 90's and is expected to get into triple digits tomorrow. We will leave tomorrow morning...

Jun 4, 2014 - Up the Joaquin Valley

Today was moving day. We moved a couple hundred miles up route 99 to Sacramento. As expected much of the drive was through extensive farmlands. A bit of a surprise, given the water shortage, were the miles of flowered bushes that lined the side and median of the road. We have arrived at Cal Expo where we are in a large parking lot for RVs with full hookups. The skies are blue and are expected to stay that way throughout the week that we will be here. Temperatures are forecasted to hit triple digits.

May 1, 2014 - So the adventure begins, part II

Well, here it is the first of May and I'm trying to resume my road trip, which initially started in Dec, with a couple of stops from Sacramento-Boston-Atlanta and finally South Padre Island(to be known as SPI). The winter in SPI was like most other places in the country, unseasonable weather, but enjoyable, met a lot of nice people in the campgrounds and renewed friendships with Chuck and Maren Constanza, great hosts and even greater people. My travel partner from Jan-March was another good guy, Leo Hamill, who guided me from a novice RVer...

Mar 12, 2014 - Things to do in Sacramento

Well, it’s time to do some “work”. We left our wonderful Lakeside campsite in Pahrump last Thursday and drove to Sacramento with an overnight stop in Fernley, Nevada. We had planned to stay at the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville because it would have been so very close to family and appointments we’ll be making, but that, disappointingly, didn’t work out. So we made the last minute decision to come back to Cal Expo. Cal Expo’s RV park is a big gravel parking lot with some RVs parked very close together. So for the next short while...

Dec 19, 2013 - Sacramento

On Thursday we had a lovely scenic countryside drive to Sacramento. The sun was shining the whole way. We stayed 2 nights there for a break from driving. We walked around a bit down to the old town done in the gold rush days style, with more tat for sale than you can imagine. A tour of the lovely State Legislation building built after the gold rush, and it shows. Then on to Bakersfield on I5 and over to 99 after another 5 hour drive at 70 mph! It was wall to wall traffic on the I5 but at least the sun was shining. Tomorrow is the last leg...

Dec 15, 2013 - Day 10-12: Friday the 13th and all that

I think it was last year that we made a vow to honour the old sailor's adage: "Never leave port on a Friday." But we did, and it was okay! The news from home is good today -- my sister has been transferred from the ICU to a ward, which means she's officially off the critical list; her condition is improving, much to everyone's great relief. Still no diagnosis, but they continue to run tests and treat what they find. So we continue. We made the long (1.5 hour), arduous (interstate almost all the way) trip from Greenbrae to Sacramento under...

Nov 8, 2013 - Cal Expo

We took several days to get from Fairview to Sacramento. We stayed a few nights in Sutherlen, Oregon at an Escapee Park called Timber Valley. This is where Aunt Meg and Uncle Pete had their "site". Timber Valley has deer and turkeys every where you look! Next day we stayed over night at JGW again, on the Sacramento River in Redding-Anderson. Then we arrived at CalExpo RV Park in Sacramento. During this time we had a Memorial service for our step-dad, Ange. The entirefamily, east to west coast attended. A few days later, we had an early...

Sep 20, 2013 - From Oregon to California via Rt. 97

We started driving south this morning on Rt. 97 from Oregon to California. It was just minutes when we saw Mt. Shasta ahead. We had views of Mt Shasta just about the entire trip which went through the Shasta/Trinity National Park (in the Cascade Mountains). Our trip was about 5 hours and I believe that we were in Cascades 3 of those 5 hours. It wasn't an easy drive for Bill, but it was a beautiful one. Mt. Shasta is in the California, in the Cascades, and is 14,162ft high. It is higher than Pike's Peak in Colorado at 14,100ft. After we...

Sep 12, 2013 - Heading home

The roads into and out of Bull Bend are awful so we stayed put most of the time. Today we were supposed to meet Sally and Mike in Mount Shasta but Murray had a little mishap. About 20 miles out of La Pine his rig caught on fire. We fortunately were right by an abandoned gas station for a good place to pull over and the fire department was 3 minutes away so the damage was confined to the belly. But the wiring and pipes were destroyed and the odor in the trailer was sickening. So we went back to La Pine, Sally and Mike drove up there and...
