Jul 5, 2015 - Wind up and Frostbite

Last night we stood outside the main conference meeting hall enjoying ice cream served in thin plastic clamshell type containers. My hand was curled round it and my fingers grew colder and colder. At the time I thought nothing of it. Christine had the good sense, apparently, to wrap a paper napkin around the container for insulation. After we finished, my fingers were numb. By the time we reached the trailer they had thawed out, somewhat, but two were still quite tender. Today, those two are still very tender and sensitive to the touch. I...

Jul 4, 2015 - Back to the Trailer

We were up at a reasonable time this morning, took most of our things to the truck and went for breakfast with Les. It was a beautiful morning and not too warm so we sat outside and Christine took photos of some of the cacti in the garden outside the hotel. We went to the morning sessions and Mark Buchanan spoke again, talking of how Paul and Silas were the ones accused of turning the world upside down and asked the question, "When was the last time your Church was accused of turning the world upside down?" The Lehotsky award was presented...

Jul 3, 2015 - A Quieter Day and Practical Outcome from Meetings

I was up first and went to a breakout session that CEIF was putting on on the life cycle of Churches, what caused them and the effect on pastors. It was reasonably well attended, though was probably not the most popular choice of the available subjects. I went up to the main conference room, meeting people to talk to on the way and met Christine. We went into the meeting room and sat at a table that was all from our home Church. Iain McAuliffe, Larry Froese, Cory Seibel, Darren Lietz and ourselves. The one ministry partner from Africa who...

Jul 2, 2015 - Meetings and Renewed Friendships

We were up and checked our e-mail this morning to learn that Eva's Dad had passed away this morning. Les is quite upset, both at the loss of his father-in-law and not being able to be with Eva at this time. We went down for breakfast this morning, which we enjoyed with Iain & Larry from Edmonton, the Jon joined us. We went to the morning session which was led by Mark Buchanan of Calgary. He was very good and will continue tomorrow and Saturday. This led into a general session asking questions about the mission of the Church. During these...

Jul 1, 2015 - The Conference Begins

We were up early this morning and down for breakfast. Unlike yesterday when many of the board members were having breakfast together, we were among the few in the dining room. We did meet a couple form Edmonton whom we had not known before. I left Christine to go to the CEIF board meeting. The meeting went ill noon when we broke for lunch. While eating, Larry Froese, Cory Seibel, Jon Putz, Iain McAuliffe and Paul Gericke came in. I also met others that I recognized. We reconvened in the afternoon and the meeting went till after 3pm. I...

Jun 30, 2015 - Train and back...hot hot hot!

We woke in the hotel this morning and sent off a text to our oldest grandson, wishing him "Happy Birthday". We went down stairs to meet some of the CEIF board and their wives. Some of us had breakfast together and we all met in the lobby. We drove out to Napa in several cars and met at the railway station where we waited to board a train that goes up the valley and serves a meal. On the way we had texts back and forth with Hunter, the birthday boy. The train was much longer than I had expected and took a while to board. We were all in the...

Jun 29, 2015 - Upscale move

We had a leisurely breakfast then compiled a list of things we needed. I again battled unsuccessfully with the Internet and went to the office. They expressed surprise, but another camper said she had the same problem. They promised to check it out. We had not intended staying at the hotel for the conference, but last night we looked at the schedule and realized Christine would have to spend a lot of time either at the trailer or in the conference centre with nowhere to rest. We called Les this morning and asked if we could take him up on...

Jun 28, 2015 - A Quick Introduction to Sacramento

We woke this morning to a text giving us the distressing news that Eva - the lady whose home we were going to for dinner - her father had suffered a stroke which is thought to be terminal. Les, her husband was taking her to San Francisco to catch a flight. Her father is in the Faroe Islands, a small group of Danish controlled islands between Scotland and Iceland. It is remotely possible that he knew my father. He would just have been a by, but he attended the Brethren Assembly in Torshavn which my father also attended when stationed there...

Jun 27, 2015 - Sacramento at Last!

We had a relaxed breakfast then packed up for the short hop over to Sacramento. It was a busy road and the GPS took us over back roads from the 101 to the 80 which were busy, but, being only two lane, we were able to hold up most of the traffic for a clear road ahead. I am sure there were a lot of unhappy motorists on these roads this morning. We passed the ends of Sonoma and Napa Valleys, and saw the first winery we had stopped at with the tour we did a couple of years ago with some of the CEIF Board. The I80 was very busy and the other...

Gidday everyone Its Ollie here. I am loving travelling in America because there are heaps of things to see. My favourite thing was seeing a white tail deer at the grand canyon plus seeing the grand canyon. The Grand Canyon was so scary because if you fall you will die. We are in sacramento and we are going to check out the old town. We have to go over this cool yellow bridge. At Disney land we saw a big boat. I went on the California screamin roller coaster it was awesome. Love Ollie

Jan 22, 2015 - Final entry

Final tally on the Scrabble tournament. We played 16 games during our trip and had decided that we would tally both the number of games won and the total scores from each game. The final results are as follows: Mary won 8 games and Jonathan won 8 games. The final total score was Mary with 4817 and Jonathan with 4834. In reality, our tournament was a draw. We thought about having a final showdown, an overtime game if you please. In the end, we decided to just let it stand. It's how many of our Scrabble games over the years turn out - very...

Jan 13, 2015 - Finally in California

Our first time to go to the Blue Grass Festival and we had to get sick. Originally scheduled to fly to California January 6, spend a few days with the grandkids then leisurely drive to Blythe to join the McDole's, Theroux's, the Wise's and the Collingwood's, for a week of camping, camaraderie and blue grass music, we sat in Florida and sneezed and coughed for a week. So when we finally felt better it was now January 13, the festival would start January 16 and we had to get from Orlando to Blythe. Undaunted we flew to Sacramento, picked up...
