Apr 21, 2016 - Back to Sac

Today we drove back to Sacramento and Cal Expo RV Park. On Friday we went to see Avery in her school play. Every year the first grade at Leonardo da Vinci performs a play called "Under the Sea". There are 3 different views of life under the sea and what type of creatures live in each environment. Each environment is hosted by "Olly the Octopus". Avery was one of the Ollies. The children sang, danced and acted their parts; various kinds of fish, some sea horses and other sea creatures. It was delightful. We also got to see Lucas play ball...

Apr 12, 2016 - Arrive in Sacramento

This is the last time! Never again will we get up at 3AM eastern time, drive to Orlando, fly to Sacramento (always with one stop) arriving around noon then get an Uber to the storage place in Woodland, hook up and drive to Cal Expo RV Park, only to have to go out again and grocery shop. Never! Never! Never! So we spent the next 3 days recovering and stocking up for the Beer and Beans Rewind rally, a sequel to our first HitchHiker rally in 2008 in Vacaville CA organized by Debbie Granger. And we saw Avery practicing for her role as Flounder...

Apr 11, 2016 - Lake Minden RV Resort (4/7 - 4/9/16)

Hello from Nicolaus, CA. This is a rather large RV park located around a nice little lake, Lake Minden. The part where we are is like a large field with sites set up with water and electricity. We are on the last row in a large site and we backup to a field so we have a big backyard. Tim wants to try his hand at fishing the lake. There are a number of people around the lake fishing. On our way over here I mentioned meatloaf in a conversation. Tim pinged on that and wanted it for supper. I needed to go to the grocery store for hamburger...

Jan 3, 2016 - Sacramento CA

We violated our rule to never drive on CA99 north of Bakersfield but I-5 was so rough coming south that we did it. The road was pretty good and the traffic wasn't too bad since it was Sunday but there aren't many rest stops. We arrived in Sacramento around 1 PM and our adventures in Sacramento began. We had dinners at Andy and Laura's. We saw Lucas' and Avery's first basketball practice. We celebrated Andy's and Terry's birthdays early with dinner at Hawks Public House. Andy and Laura and the kids had given us a gift certificate to Studio...

Oct 12, 2015 - Old Sacramento

We had a sleep in today and then went to Denny's for breakfast. I'm getting sick of eating bread and really wanted my usual of eggs and mushrooms.... I got it but with some mini sausages and two tiny strips of bacon and this mound of grated potatoes that they called hash browns. Was a bit surprised to see they put cheese in their scrambled eggs so it was a bit much but loved my mushrooms! I have missed them. Again I didn't finish the meal. We then ventured to Old Sacramento. Got lost at least 5 times because their off ramps aren't as clear...

J in the USA!

Oct 11, 2015 - Sacramento

First things first! We're alive! We made it to Sacramento with me driving! Very scary and we pretty much instantly got lost even though we were following the signs to go north. We managed to find the way out and I actually drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was very foggy on one end and pretty clear on the other! Bit strange. But I better fill you in on the past few days first. Two days ago we went to Sausalito because a pilot we sat next to recommended it, plus a couple of other people. The bus took ages and we soon found out it's...

Aug 28, 2015 - Sacramento California

Sacramento CA, home of our son, his wife and our 2 beautiful grandchildren. A variety of activities were on the schedule for our days in Sacramento. We watched the Sacramento Republic beat Tulsa 3-1. We had dinner with Mike and Sally Theroux and Judy and Jerry Hare and lunch at Doug and Judy Fowler's home. We were there for Andy and Terry's 2015 wine crush in their shared driveway. Avery visited with Grandma at the RV while Daddy and Grandpa picked up the Subaru that Andy traded our Yaris for. And she and Lucas slept over one night. We...

Aug 17, 2015 - Day 41

Up early to backtrack toward Sacramento for new/replacement Chacos for me and replacement battery charger. Found grocery prices much higher in this part of the world, at least at Whole Foods! Winding road up to Lake Tahoe, a bit of a challenge with our rig and the road was busy, even with bicycles. South Tahoe reminded us of any other major tourist spot (think Gatlinburg). You really can't see the lake for the hotels, condos, and casinos. We just drove thru and stopped at hillside pull off for lunch in the camper. There are long views of...

Aug 16, 2015 - Day 40

On the Road Again! Back on 101 S, we went by Curiosity Hill and "house in log" but they were not open yet, Another corridor of beautiful redwoods and then road opened into valley. Suddenly we were in area with lots of tents and campers everywhere..appeared to be some sort of festival but people were not yet up and stirring. Stopped for fuel at station along way that had Carls,Jr attached so lunched rather than another sandwich! Next stretch of road took up thru recent forest fire area. Some fire trucks still there (for monitoring?) Burned...

Jul 27, 2015 - Off to Alaska

Dear Family and Friends—We are off on our next trip. This time we’re going to Alaska—this is the first of three trips we plan to eventually take to Alaska. We will drive our truck to Bellingham, Washington, leave it in the parking lot there, and get on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. We’ll stop everywhere the ferry stops, and get off and spend a few days in each place before catching the ferry again to continue north. We will whale watch (in kayaks), bear watch at Anan Creek Wildlife Preserve, take a boat tour at Glacier Bay National Park,...

Jul 7, 2015 - Goodbye California

Last night I said to Christine that normally I am loath to return home after a holiday, but this time I felt ready to go. This morning I revised that opinion and, with a heavy heart I got things stowed away for the return journey. We had breakfast and put things away ready to travel. The road through Sacramento was, as usual, busy, with the freeway expanding ti seven lanes and gradually contracting and expanding as we passed exits and entrances. Once through there the traffic calmed down and we had a good drive, rising gradually through the...

Jul 6, 2015 - Taking it easy

We had a leisurely breakfast for the first time for a week! Christine did laundry and I tidied up then washed some socks that did not mesh with the machine load. We had lunch and went and got some groceries and refuelled the truck. This is the last place of size we will be in till we reach Calgary or Edmonton. We came back and while Christine restocked the shelves, I got propane and checked the emails at Starbucks along the road. We had dinner and tidied up then did some preparations for leaving tomorrow. Not a very interesting day from a...
