Oct 11, 2016 - 3rd Update

October 9, 2016 (Sunday): Well, this day started off horribly! I got up and took my shower in the campground restroom. I returned to the trailer and started using my computer. Betty was just getting out of bed and putting on her slipper. She yelled and said her right hip bone just popped out of the socked. This was the hip she had replaced (for the second time) about 5 years ago. She was in excruciating pain and could do nothing but lay down to feel the most comfortable. The fire engine and ambulance crew arrived in less than 10 minutes. It...

Oct 8, 2016 - A day with the dogs

Kathy and I are headed off to the care home with Ben. He is a therapy dog. He is very gentle despite his big size and the residents love him. We stop first in the exercise room where he goes up to each person for attention. Then we are off to the rooms of those who don't dome to exercise. To finish off the day the four of us are going to the Black & white Fur Ball. This is an event sponsored by the local SPCA. You get a plate and a wine glass and just roam around eating and drinking and checking out the dogs and cats that are available for...

Oct 4, 2016 - Sacramento CA

We were back just in time to help Andy and his investors press the grapes. And we watched anxiously as Hurricane Matthew hit Central Florida. We were in constant touch with our neighbors. Fortunately the storm veered off shore at the last minute and we were spared the worst. Never even lost electricity. But Shelby, Richard's sister, had to evacuate from Sebastian to Tampa. We attended soccer games, ate at our favorite restaurants, visited with the grand kids, and went to Lucas' 11th birthday party and Avery's 8th birthday party. On October...

Oct 3, 2016 - Hanging out

I went grocery shopping today, by myself so I could get more in the car. I always forget that you have to bring your own bags here so I just put everything back in the basket and rolled it out to the car where I had bags. Kathy worked today and then had Vet school so I cooked dinner. The last time we were here I was too sick to do much of anything. So we had spaghetti, salad, fresh green beans, and an antipasto plate.

Oct 2, 2016 - Sacramento

I called the kids to see if it was OK to come in a day early, no problem, if possible be there by 4 as they were having an animal blessing. Figured it should not have been a problem until we ran into the first accident. Car over the embankment onto a frontage road, upside down and wrecked. But about 15 minutes later we came upon another accident. This one involved a motorcycle. The air ambulance landed in the field and as we approached you could see them carrying the person to the helo. Made it to David's just after 4:00 and I took Phoenix...

Oct 1, 2016 - The Big Crush, Wine Festival

Oct 1 is the first day of the 2 day Big Crush weekend here in Plymouth. Tickets were presold but we were able to buy ours at the first Winery stop. The ticket is good for 2 days. Each winery has something special for the customer. Most have food, special deals on wine and some had live jazz or blues. Saturday we went to the wineries that were out of the way, hoping to avoid the crowds. We did well. Each had good wine, good food and very personal attention. We had succeeded in missing the crowds. We bought a couple of bottles during the day...

Sep 30, 2016 - Plymouth,Ca

Awoke to another beautiful day in Tahoe. Had breakfast, showered and packed up to leave. We would not recommend this campground. I would stay here in the 5th wheel but not in the Westie again. The washrooms are substandard and if we were in the 5th wheel we wouldn't have to use them. The location is fine. The drive to Plymouth was a long 70 miles. Road repaving had us waiting for a good 30 minutes and then the back up on the highway was very slow. We eventually arrived in plenty of time to get to the recommended winery, Karmere. We had wine...

Aug 15, 2016 - Time to go home

Alas it was Monday and time to go home. While I readied the RV for the trip Grandpa took the kids to the golf course. Lucas and Grandpa played golf and Avery played foot golf. We were all looking forward to stopping at the Fresh and Bangin' Eatery for lunch. Lucas was salivating for the pulled pork. Since we were running a little behind schedule we decided to call the restaurant to see how busy they were. We got the following message: "We are closed today for a catering event. We are sorry for the inconvenience." DISAPPOINTED! Lucas still...

Aug 8, 2016 - Sacramento, CA

Goodbye Redding and hello Sacramento. We had a pretty easy drive past lots of almonds trees and farm land. But then we got near Sacramento. Boy, we haven’t been in city traffic for a while and now I remember why I am not crazy about it in the RV. But we made it to our RV park which is part of the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento. It turned out that part of the park is asphalt and part is gravel and yucky. We got the gravel and yucky part. But it’s well located, quiet, not crowded AND they have a nice dog park for Rocky. So while Jay set...

Jul 22, 2016 - Leaving Sacramento

Dear Family and Friends—Tomorrow, July 23, we are off on a new adventure! This time, we’re taking the truck and trailer and driving to Alaska, where we’ll head to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali, Homer, Seward, and many, many points in between. We’ll be on the road six weeks. We know that access to wifi will be limited on this trip, so we may only be able to post updates to our journal at widely spaced intervals. This will be an exciting and fun trip—we’re going to enjoy fishing trips, kayaking expeditions, hiking and lots of oohing and aahing...

Jul 4, 2016 - Sacramento

Not a good last couple of days. Woke up 2 days ago feeling nauseous. Did not feel like eating or drinking. Did not go away. Yesterday was the same. When Kathy came home from church we headed to the ER. 7 hours later, multiple tests and IV fluids and saltines, I felt much better. Able to eat toast and drink OJ this morning. Guess I was just dehydrated. Other exciting news, as were were leaving Castle Rock, realized had no horn, wipers, or cruise control. Checked in at freightliner in Salem but it was a 4-5 hour wait. Will check here in...

May 6, 2016 - Sacramento again

I flew back to Sacramento 10 days later to see Avery play Flounder in "The Little Mermaid". I slept in Lucas' room. There were 2 performances, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, Mothers' Day. The actors were all from Avery's school, Leonardo da Vinci Elementary. Avery was the only 1st grader in a major role. And she was outstanding. Actually the whole cast was outstanding. The staging and visual effects were also very good. I really was glad I made the trip and Avery was happy her grandma came all the way back from Florida to see her...
