Sep 27, 2013 - The Lodge at Durango RV Park

Here are the promised pictures of the lodge. Hope the sunlight pouring through the windows this morning doesn't spoil the beauty of the room. No way to get one shot of the whole room. Just too big! (Taken with I-Phone camera.) Guess where we're going this morning??? Yay! Back to Mt Lassen for the complete circle! Jim's resting his back some more.

Sep 26, 2013 - Mt Lassen!!

When Jim and I took our morning, we had no thought of going anywhere in the afternoon. What a surprise to walk in the door (after I'd spent hours at the lodge writing the journal and relaxing) to hear Jim say, "Let's take a ride up to Mt Lassen!" "What? Really? Now?? I haven't even changed out of my walking clothes!"... How could I run out the door without a thought about what to take? "Just go!" Jim said. So off we went! The 50 mile drive took less than an hour, much of it spent in high-desert forested areas. And once there, haleluiah!...

Sep 26, 2013 - Durango in Red Bluff

So glad for the sudden drop in temperature and biting wind. I know that doesn't make sense, but it's the reason I walked up to use the lodge wifi. I'd enjoyed the ambiance 2 days ago when we decided to stay at Durango Resort longer, but never made it back up here. A blazing fire is just what I need to write this entry! Wish you could see the whole park, but especially the lodge. Just close your eyes and imagine.... 10 windows, floor-to-ceiling (ceilings vaulted and massive, possibly 30 feet at the highest), all windows offering...

Sep 25, 2013 - Red Bluff

I kind of cheated with Monday's entry. "We're going to stay in Red Bluff" was actually added the next morning, mostly to alert family not to expect us home in the next day or two. That decision had come about in a most bizarre way! We'd awakened Tuesday, fully prepared to drive halfway to Bakersfield, possibly stopping in Chowchilla to check out the RV Golf Resort where we'd stayed another time. But about the time we should have been leaving, Jim disappeared. When he didn't come back for an unusually long time, I went looking for him and...

Sep 18, 2013 - Taking Meals Together

On most trains breakfast in the dinning car is served on a first-come-first-served schedule while lunch and dinners are by reservation time to ensure that everyone who wishes to be is served during the appropriate times that the dinning car is open. The dinning cars also serve community style when filled to capacity so you may find yourselves sharing a table with interesting folks in many instances. Since we constituted a party of three, throughout the trip to NYC we often would find ourselves without a table mate but whenever we shared our...

Sep 12, 2013 - Redding, CA - Redding RV Park

Our trip from Chiloquin, OR to Redding, CA was 170 miles driving through the valleys of OR and then up to the base of Mount Shasta in California before descending to Redding. The Allison transmission got a good workout and the Mothership got a drink at Weeds, CA just as we started the descent. The first thirty miles after the fill-up was almost all downhill and we average over 13 MPG for that thirty miles. By the time we got to Redding it had fallen to a 10.2 MPG average as we had a few uphill grades the last 30 miles. We normally get about...

Jun 4, 2013 - Redding and Lassen Volcanic NP

What a rude awakening! On Monday, we left Ft. Bragg and Pomo RV Park and headed east on our way to Yellowstone and ultimately, home. It was about 50 degrees on the coast. After the winding trip across CA 20, we reached I-5 and headed into the Central Valley of California to Redding, a city of about 90,000. By the time we got there, it was 99 degrees! We stayed at JGW RV park/resort off Exit 673 of I-5 and on the Sacramento River. What a lovely park! The sites were huge and level with concrete pads for the RV and an asphalt apron for the...

May 7, 2013 - We returned to the Redding Elks Lodge

Our routine maintenance at All Wheel was completed yesterday but we stayed one more night and then moved back over to the Elks on Tuesday morning. Once we got our house back in order, we called our good friends Linda & Jerry and we spent the next 2 days going over to their house to play Pinochle. Of course in between hands we found time to enjoy great BBQ in their backyard along with trips to In & Out and Guadalajara. Needless to say we very much enjoyed our time with these wonderful friends. They are talking about different trips they will...

May 1, 2013 - All Wheel Alignment

My entry date is May 1, which is the date we arrived here at All Wheel Alignment. You guessed it, we need some work done that is taking a few days. After 8 years and 85,000 miles, the brakes need to be replaced and the engine water hoses. While it was anticipated this work would need to be done, I had hoped we could do it in the fall when we head south. The good news though is that we can get it done now while we're here and we'll be better protected out there on the road. Current estimates on getting away from All Wheel is about Tuesday,...

Apr 30, 2013 - Redding Elks Lodge

It was mid-afternoon when we decided to leave our beautiful campsite along the Pit River. Keith & Nancy headed back to Quincy and we headed west to Redding. We all enjoyed one another's company and we're looking forward to getting together again somewhere up the road. The Elks Lodge had a few spaces left when we arrived and we quickly backed into a spot and hooked up to the 50amps and water. This will be just an overnight stay as we need to get some routine maintenance done at All Wheel Alignment tomorrow. This is our favorite facility for...

Apr 28, 2013 - We're Baaaaaaack!

We have finished with family and friends' visitation and will end the month of April taking it easy in a pretty park in Redding, California. It seems like it has been a year since we left Texas. -- We have been without internet for the past week. I will do one update entry to cover the last ten days. -- We visited with Auntie Squeak and Uncle Steve for three days in the middle of the month. We always have such a great time with them. -- Then on the weekend, we moved to the KOA in Shingle Springs, just below Placerville in the Sierra...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Apr 15, 2013 - No sweat

We had a 160 mile "no sweat" journey from Vacaville to Redding in northern California today. Both I-505 and I-5 north of the Sacramento area appear to have been recently repaved. They were smooth and not broken with cracks and pot holes. What a difference from Saturday's drive. Our travel preparation was almost leisurely this morning and we didn't leave Vineyard until almost 10AM. The weather was perfect for the drive with a cool temperature in the upper 50's and very little wind until we approached our destination. Our truck averaged 12...
