Jan 31, 2013 - Red Bluff California
Well we made it over the Siskiyou's but it was real foggy at the top, and lots of snow on the sides, but nothing on the road. Seemed to be a LOT of trucks this time and several of them didn't move over to the SLOW TRUCK lane so I had to move over in the fast lane to go by them, and of course just before the top there were too many cars in the fast lane and I had to brake and wait for an opening. Lost momentum but made it on by the slow truck. Then just before Redding the "CHECK ENGINE SOON" light came on so we stopped in Redding at "All...

Jan 16, 2013 - Red Bluff to Lotus
Red Bluff, CA to Lotus, CA Today’s traveling distance wasn’t going to be too long, so took care of a bunch of mail, went for a walk and finally headed out at 10:45, although I didn’t get too far before making my first stop. As one travels around the country, or even in their own neighborhood, there are places one just has to stop – like the Snow Cap Café in Sisters, or the Camp Sherman store, or your favorite Starbucks, or that restroom break halfway between here and there. Well, for those who haven’t yet traveled through Corning, you need...

Aug 13, 2012 - Still in Red Bluff
Yesterday we decided to explore Redding which is 30 miles north. The main attraction for us was the Sundial Bridge. This is a pedestrian bridge which was made with materials from over a hundred countries and is the largest sundial in the world. The bridge deck is made of 3 layers of aquamarine transluscent glass and is quite lovely. There was a farmers market just before we got to it but we didn't buy anything because we had gone to one the day before in Red Bluff and purchased a ton of fruits and vegetables. After leaving the bridge, we...

Aug 10, 2012 - Truck is fixed and all is good
We won't go into the specifics of all the phone calls that we had to make throughout the morning, but we found a friend in the service manager at the Ford dealership in Corning, CA. The morning began with an indication from Ford warranty that they needed to send an inspector to look at our vehicle before they authorized the repair. Unfortunately, the inspector could only come on Monday which would result in us being stuck here at least until Tuesday. The service manager made many calls (and so did Adele but all it got was raised blood...

Aug 9, 2012 - Arrival in Red Bluff
Well, we made the decision yesterday to challenge the truck with a trip through the mountains from Oregon to California and the truck lost. Our day started early. We left Oregon at 8:00 to beat the heat. It was an uneventful drive until we hit Ashland which is where the highest of the mountains was located. On ascent, Adele noted a burning smell but it went away and we continued on our journey. Upon arrival in California, we had to stop at the agrigulture inspection station. We decided last night not to throw out any fruits or vegetables...

Jul 26, 2012 - Red Bluff, CA
You know what's cool? Leaving the mountains in the morning and being in the desert in the afternoon. California does offer variety. Nothing special about Red Bluff, just a stop along the way. They did have a very nice RV park or as I call them "parking lot". The places we've stayed on this trip are very different than the campgrounds we stayed at as a kid. No campfires, no wooded sites with mini golf, game rooms and bingo. Just a parking lot of large motor homes and a strip of grass if you are lucky. For being full timers (people that live...

Apr 27, 2012 - Our first visit to Red Bluff
Why stop in Red Bluff? Mostly because it is about 200 miles from Modesto and there is an Elks Lodge with RV parking. The normal procedure at the Elks lodges is after getting all set up, clean up a little and then report to the office or bar to register and here is it the bar. They have a shuffle board which are becoming so rare and we normally take the time to play a game or two. Sharon gave me a lesson.

Oct 1, 2011 - California, here we come
We left Phoenix, OR on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning, for a 180 mile leg that took us over the Siskiyou mountains into California. Our route down I-5 included a couple of 4,000+ elevation passes and descents, which put our truck (nicknamed BAT, for Big Ass Truck) to a serious test. We continue to be amazed with the truck's performance, both climbing and descending. Our fifth wheel weighs over 15,000 lbs., with the combined weight of the truck/trailer exceeding 23,000 lbs. - over 11 tons! We were able to comfortably climb the grades...

Sep 22, 2011 - Red Bluff, CA
September 22: Arrived at the Red Bluff, California Elks Lodge where we were provided with a Electric/Water site. A real good place to rest up. We drove around Red Bluff one day and got the car washed. It was unbelievably dirty. There wasn't much to see or do in the Red Bluff area, so we just hung out around the RV. Behind the Lodge building, there is a lake where over 100 egrets were feeding and resting. The lake is nearly bone dry. There is a outlet to the Sacramento River, But the outlet is now dry stopping water flow from the river to...

Jul 16, 2011 - Red Bluff, CALIFORNIA
Well it was a drippy morning leaving Florence. It also seems like on our travel days that it's taking us longer to get started---suconcious working maybe? Used the dump station at the Elks RV Park and then drove down to the entrance which has a huge area to hook up the jeep---of course, Sam got the worse of the dripping. I just had to go sit inside the jeep and do my thing (putting it out of gear). Although we had coffee at camp, I think the drippiness makes us want something warm. Before we hit the busy of Florence, there's a little coffee...

Jun 21, 2011 - First Day Out
We left San Ramon around 0900 and our first stop was in Lodia, CA and the Flying "J" truck stop where we dumped $342.00 of diesel into the fuel tank. We traveled Interstate 5 to Red Bluff where we stopped for the night. We traveled 227 miles and we have covered this same strip of concrete, asphalt, and pot holes more times than we can remember. The scenery is basically flat urban area until you get north of Sacramento when the land becomes more rural with farms and orchards and fields under cultivation for various crops. The coastal hills...
