May 17, 2015 - Redding Stopover

Not much to report today. A travel day and stopover before heading to Grants Pass, OR. We are staying at the Redding Elks RV Park. 20 sites with Electric, Water, WiFi & Cable. Dump Station. They also have a pool here, but it was too cold to swim today. Will spend 2 days in Grants Pass, then on to Portland for a couple of days. Later, you all! Darryl, Carole, Burt & Arlene

May 16, 2015 - Petaluma Street Fair & Carshow

Another beautiful day in Petaluma. Slept in until 8:30, had leisurely breakfast, sat and read until after lunch, then headed to Old Town Petaluma. An updated area of the city with, of course, upscale restaurants, antique shops, etc. There was a car show, street fair and Farmers Market today. We drove into the town, were lucky enough to find parking and walked through the car show. It was HUGE! It would have taken us all day to see it all. Cars of every type. Restored, modified, souped-up, customized, etc. We took a few pictures of some ars...

May 15, 2015 - Visiting Santa Rosa

After a dreary, rainy day Thursday, it dawned cool but clear this morning. We took off for Santa Rosa as we heard there was a nice little town square and good restaurants. It took some trouble, but after a few false starts, we found Railroad Square. About a four block area of antique stores, thrift stores, and restaurants. Did some shopping. Bought things we don't need, and had a great lunch at The Omelette Express. We all had the daily Special, Cheeseburger on brioche, with guacamole and soup or salad. All but Carole had the tomato bisque...

May 13, 2015 - Dinner with Don & Leishia

Here we are after dinner outside of Garibaldi's. Great restaurant, wonderful dinner. Had a great time with Don & Leishia. The drive from Petaluma to SF was interesting, to say the least. Going to SF we are going 55 to 60 MPH, while watching the very heavy traffic going the opposite way. I mean VERY HEAVY traffic. Some of the line ups at off ramps were at least 100 cars long! Luckily, by the time we headed back, we were cruising at 65 the whole way. Great ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. Just as beautiful at 5:50 as at 9:00 PM! Not sure...

May 13, 2015 - Petaluma

Whew! We made it through Oakland unscathed! What traffic! What drivers! 144 miles from Salinas to Petaluma. The Elks Lodge RV Park here is very nice. Everything but cable TV. Not very near a freeway, train tracks or airport! WOW! Here until Sunday AM then on to Redding. Last stop in CA before crossing into Oregon. Burt and Arlene are heading to the city to scope out things. Carole & I will relax here until time to drive into SF to have dinner with Don & Leishia at Garibaldis. Looking forward to seeing them, but not the drive in, around and...

Sep 28, 2014 - Cleanup, fixup

We took the day off from sightseeing to do some housekeeping chores. We found a new shopping center not too far away with all the good stores -- Target, Home Goods, Kirkland, Sprouts (!), plus the requisite Starbucks, Chipotle, and lots of others. We picked up food, human and feline, and came back to clean and vacuum and reorganize so we can leave in the morning to head to Yosemite. We've been told that any fires there are small and under control and all roads are open. Let's hope so.

Sep 27, 2014 - North of Napa

After studying all the propaganda we picked up in Sonoma yesterday, we picked out a couple of wineries we thought might be good candidates for a couple of relaxed, and not-too-expensive, wine tastings. Since it was a weekend, we knew the traffic would be worse than yesterday -- had no idea how much worse though. We stopped at Napa Cellars/Menage a Trois. It is a really pretty and unpretentious place. Some of these wineries look like European castles and the prices for tastings reflect the surroundings, apparently. But we took our time and...

Sep 26, 2014 - Sonoma

We went to Sonoma today and spent some time walking around the square downtown, perusing some of the stores. We spent some time in the Cheese Factory, a store which has a large selection of cheeses and wines and baked goods and fun stuff. We walked a bit and then came back and ordered a great lunch accompanied by a glass of wine, of course, and some great gelato and ate on their outdoor patio. The town wasn't too busy until a tour bus disgorged their herd of travelers, who made a quick sweep through town, piled back on the bus, and were...

Sep 25, 2014 - Lagniappe

Lagniappe: originally a Quechua word meaning something unexpected and extra. That's what today was. We were supposed to have a rainy day today, but all the rain came during the night and we woke up to beautiful blue skies and puffy white clouds. So we headed off to one of my bucket list destinations: Muir Woods. What an amazing place! There are lots of trails to check out, but the main one is a loop trail through the woods at creek level and then winding up the cliff side so that you can see the tops of these beautiful redwood groves. The...

Sep 24, 2014 - Wine and more

It only took us a couple of hours to drive down here on highway 101, but it was, without any doubt, the crappiest road we have ever traveled on -- and we've been on a lot of crappy roads! There is construction everywhere except here where they could use it more than anywhere else. (Note to self: buy stock in whatever company makes those orange construction barrels. They must be putting them out by the millions.) We chose another KOA, this time in Petaluma, since it's kind of in the middle of wine country, the coast, and San Francisco. We...

Aug 1, 2013 - Petaluma KOA

Last day in Petaluma. Off to see Point Reyes National Shoreline, visit Cowgirl Creamery and have a tour/ taste at Hog Island Oysters! Nope, all set to go and truck won’t start. Kind neighbour gives us a boost, looking totally lost as he does so. I don’t think Californians have a lot of cause to boost their vehicles but he was willing to help and that was appreciated. For us in Canada we all know that it is a rite of passage. We head off to the local Ford Dealer and they take the truck in for overnight testing. We spend the rest of the day...

Jul 28, 2013 - Highway 101

A travel day. Moving from Crescent city to Petaluma, just a step away from San Francisco! A fascinating trip of narrow redwood lined lanes followed by wide open freeways. Many up and down and windy turns but eventually the 101 becomes a freeway and we arrived in Petaluma. KOA has a reputation for narrow small sites but our site turned out to be great. We had an end site with a swing and and wooden bench. It looked out on trees and a small set of grape vines. There were even peacocks wandering the property occasionally emitting their...
