Feb 22, 2012 - La Quinta, CA

Feb 22 Beautiful day, David, Kathy, Clifford and I went for an early hike in the rocks and then we left for La Quinta, CA. Made 3 stops, the first at Skull Rock, then the Cholla Gardens and finally at the visitor center. Reached La Quinta around 11:00 a.m. We are staying at the Lake Cahuilla County Park. It is beautiful here, the temp is in the low 80’s, blue skies and we are overlooking the lake. We had a bite to eat when we got here. We have hookups so the first order of business was turn on the water heater and get a hot shower, and...

Feb 21, 2012 - Desert Images

Dale joined Pam in Palm Desert after her girlfriends went home (smart man). Then we spent a week relaxing by the pool, swimming, cycling and golfing. Pam also got out and took some photos for a photography course she is taking. Dale's folks, Evelyn and Lorne, along with his sister Lorie and her partner Terry, are arriving tonight to celebrate Evelyn and Lorne's 40th wedding anniversary. They haven't been to the area before so we're looking forward to showing them around and getting in a little more golf.

Feb 14, 2012 - Pals in Palm Desert

The Vista Paseo neighborhood of Palm Desert will never be the same! 8 of my girl friends turn 50 this year and they joined me here for a few days of celebrating, reminiscing and fun. I've know all of them for at least 35 years, most of them longer (wow, I just did the math!) and even when we haven't seen each other for a while, we get together and it is like we've never been apart. Still living in Calgary are Gaye, Lynn, Pam, Patty, Sharon, Stephanie and Sue. LB flew in from Vancouver and Loree had the longest journey, coming all the way...

Feb 8, 2012 - Palm Desert

The Palm Springs Thousand Trails park is actually in Palm Desert. The place literally has 1000 large palm trees, which are often a problem when parking…but we managed. We met some terrific fellow Oregonians there, and took the tram to the top of Mount San Jacinto with them. The rotating tram is a must see in the Palm Springs area (we do it every year if possible). We also went to see the Indian Canyons, where huge palm groves line the creeks in the bottom of the canyons. Early natives lived there, and if I were camping…I would too! VERY...

Nov 9, 2011 - The first ride and a trip to the zoo

One of the great things about having kids around is that you get to do kid things! Laurie and Tom took the girls to a farm where they went for their first ride on a horse. They are still too small to go on their own so they had a tour around the corral plus a visit with the farm animals. Then we headed to the Living Desert, a zoo with animals from African and American deserts. The highlight for all was feeding carrots to a giraffe!

Nov 6, 2011 - Dual Birthday Parties

We celebrated Christina's birthday a couple of days early so that her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Susan, could be there. Christina insisted on cooking her own birthday dinner so the party was at her beautiful house (Dad took her out for a romantic birthday dinner on her actual birthday, Nov 7). It was an excellent meal followed by the perfect Swedish birthday cake, Princess Cake (Prinsesstårta), which Brian and Susan brought from LA. Nicky was happy to have some pint sized friends to play with and the rest of us were happy to toast...

Nov 4, 2011 - Birdies, Birds and Black Widows

It's been a busy week! Cam's wife Michele arrived from Calgary and we've been golfing, shopping and dining out. Cam played in the qualifying rounds of a golf tournament and we went with Michele and Cam's caddy's wife Shelly to watch. Unfortunately, despite shooting a birdie on the first hole, the rest of his game didn't go as well and he didn't qualify for the tournament. On the bright side, it was a beautiful day to walk the course and the roadrunners were happy to pose for photos so we turned into Wiley Coyotes with our Acme image...

Oct 21, 2011 - Pool Time!

After an easy drive with clear sailing, even around LA, we arrived at our home away from home in Palm Desert. We stayed at this house last spring and Pam's Dad has rented it again, for 6 months this time. It's in a great location with hiking/running trails right outside the door in the San Jacinta mountains and the ritzy El Paseo drive and it's shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. The pool is long enough to do laps in and there are plenty of road rides to be done in the area. We'll have a visit with friends for a few days as...

Apr 13, 2011 - Packing Day

Tom: We have a long driving day tomorrow; skirting LA to the north heading to TT Rancho Oso in Santa Barbara. Turned in our rental car and spoke to the TT Palm Desert Manager about how much it would cost to spend a month in the park early next year. Something we are seriously considering. We really have missed the Oregon cold and drizzle. The LP detector in our 5th wheel bit the dust and we had to replace it. Sounds easy right. Of course the one we bought did not come preped the way it was supposed to so some creatrive adjustments had to...

Apr 7, 2011 - Home base at Desert Palm

Tom: Day to take a breath and set up for our 9 day stay in the Palm Springs area. So Cal map at bottom of opening page. This is a very nice Thousand Trails Preserve. Sites are a little snugger fit than we have come to expect from Thousand Trails; but here is the good news. We scored on one of the better sites, it is in the 70's, there is a hot tub, a pool and most importantly it is sunny with no rain. I can do this! Our last stop for Diesel Fuel came in at $4.51 a gallon. We are going to be here 9 days and doing a lot of moving around....

Apr 6, 2011 - Palm Springs or bust

Tom: Coalinga in the rear view mirror. So Cal map at bottom of opening page. This was one of the longest driving days of the trip. 309 miles We went a little out of the way to avoid L.A.. We went East though Bakersfield on 58 and dropped down south on I-15. The tug over the Tehcachapi summit was at an elevation of 4091; the highest we have encountered on the trip. The truck worked pretty hard. Coming down from the pass was a thrill. Arrived in Palm Springs (Park is actually in Palm Desert - just outside of Palm springs) around 5:30 pm....
