Apr 6, 2011 - Palm Springs or bust

Tom: Coalinga in the rear view mirror. So Cal map at bottom of opening page. This was one of the longest driving days of the trip. 309 miles We went a little out of the way to avoid L.A.. We went East though Bakersfield on 58 and dropped down south on I-15. The tug over the Tehcachapi summit was at an elevation of 4091; the highest we have encountered on the trip. The truck worked pretty hard. Coming down from the pass was a thrill. Arrived in Palm Springs (Park is actually in Palm Desert - just outside of Palm springs) around 5:30 pm....

Mar 28, 2011 - Escape to Palm Desert

We'd had enough of the long, cold winter and we had the perfect excuse to escape - a visit with Pam's Dad, Lloyd, who has spent the last couple of months in Palm Desert. Pam's sister Laurie and her friend Tom were also there for the first week. Then they left and we were joined by Pam's brother Cam and his wife Michele for the last week. We took full advantage of the warm temperatures by swimming every day, hiking or running in the desert hills and Dale got his fill of golf while Pam got her fill of shopping. We also took in the Indian...

Mar 1, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 28

Unbelievable! It has been four weeks since we arrived here in Palm Desert. The weather is now perfect. It is all sun and blue skies. We have enjoyed our stay here. It is hard to believe we move on to Borrego Springs on Saturday. Glenna has booked one night at Borrego Springs and then four nights at Campland on the Bay on the north side of San Diego, before we fly home on Thursday. Glenna and I have been faithfully going to the gym every day, to get some exercise and hopefully avoid any more holiday bulge. They have lots of activities here...

Feb 24, 2011 - Poolside entry

I brought my laptop over to the pool area this afternoon. There is limited wifi here, but better than none. They have covered areas around the pool, like little tents here and there if you want to avoid the direct sun. Glenna is lounging out in the sun and reading another book on Elizabeth I. She is fascinated with the queens life, especially since our last trip to England to visit castles. I’ve hunkered down in one of the poolside tents to surf the net. I can’t see the screen if it’s too bright. I’ve had enough sun anyway, so am enjoying...

Feb 23, 2011 - Desert Palms - Day 22

I haven’t had much to write about recently. We spend most of our time within the park. We do our morning exercises in an attempt to keep from ballooning more than we already have, and become lounge lizards after lunch. We have gone out for dinner the last two nights. On Monday night we took Scott Shaw out for dinner. He is a friend of Jason’s who is working at a golf course here in Desert Springs. He has been here since early November, and plans on returning home in April. Last night we went out with friends from Portland, Oregon. They...

Feb 19, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 18

We are having a relaxing time here at Emerald Desert. We have met and made lots of friends. It’s a little sad saying goodbye to some of them as they leave, knowing we may not cross paths again. Most of the people we have met, and had great times with, are from the western part of North America. The Palm Springs area of California is second to none. The problem for us Easterners is that it is a long trip to get here. We drove 5000 miles to get here, that’s more than two round trips to Florida. Yesterday was a shopping day for Glenna. We...

Feb 16, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 15

Every morning we go down to the gym and do our morning exercises. Glenna rides the elliptical and I ride a stationary bike. The weather has been tremendous here, however it was much windier today and we had a mild dust storm. Glenna has been wanting to visit El Paseo Drive, it’s very much like Rodeo Drive in Beverley Hills and carries the same pronunciation. Many of the trendy, EXPENSIVE shops are present here as well. We spent several hours cruising the area on foot. Glenna was in her glory. Today our new slide motor was delivered. I...

Feb 13, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 12

I’m still waiting for my slide motor to arrive, hopefully it will get delivered tomorrow. The weather was perfect as we headed to the Palm Desert Annual Car Show yesterday morning. They estimated that there were more than 1000 cars on display. We spent four hours looking at all the cars. There were hundreds of cars from the 1940-50 era as well as all the muscle cars of the 70’s. Glenna especially liked all the interesting hood ornaments. Some of the older cars had artistic ornaments. She fell in love with a 1934 Packard. One of our camping...

Feb 10, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 9

Yesterday we ventured out of the park and headed to the mountains. There is a tram ride that travels from 2000 feet to over 8000 feet in 10 minutes. The Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area is the destination for this tram. It is a 14000 acre park on the mountain that allows hiking, cross country skiing, and snow ball throwing. It overlooks the cities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and a handful of other communities that occupy the valley below. It was about -3 degrees C. at the top and a moderate breeze. Glenna had no interest in...

Feb 8, 2011 - Palm Desert - Day 7

Where did the time go? Glenna and I have wound down and vegged for the entire week. The weather has been perfect. Each day we go down and exercise. I mostly ride a bike and Glenna prefers one of those walker/cross country skier machines. You can tell I have no clue about exercise machines, but I have been keeping Glenna company. I ride a couple of miles, get my heart rate up to about 130, and watch some TV all at the same time. We spend our afternoons lounging at the pool. Yesterday we had the trailer washed and detailed. It was the first...

Feb 5, 2011 - Palm Desert, Day 4

We are now settled in to our new campground. Last night we had happy hour, and invited or neighbours over for a “meet and greet”. The neatest thing about camping is mingling with your neighbours. Most of the campers in this resort are here for an extended stay, some of our neighbours have been here since November. This park was sold last year and is now run under new management. They tore out the nine hole golf course to make room for a condominium complex, which is now on hold until the economy improves. You can imagine how happy people...
