May 12, 2008 - A very mean sandwich...

We stopped overnight in Oakland, CA, to stay with Lorna's Peace Corps friends, Nick and Julie Bosustow. In 1999 Nick and Julie sold their Hollywood home and completely changed their lives to become Peace Corps Volunteers in Guatemala, where they met Lorna. After Guatemala, Nick became the Administration Officer for the Peace Corps in Suriname, South America where he and Julie lived for the following 3 years. Nick now works in recruiting for the Peace Corps office in Oakland and Julie works as a counselor helping people find jobs. Although...

Apr 20, 2008 - We made it!

Home at last. The drive from Reno to Oakland was smooth with only a 5 minute stop to change drivers. Jerky yielded the wheel to Speedy to bring us on home. Mike , Dad and Dave finished up the USA Today crossword (harder than we expected). Mike, Dave, Megan and Sandra played a final game of LIFE during the last hour of the trip. We arrived in Oakland at 3:30, which gave us plenty of time for catching up with Carolyn and Julie & the kids and also cleaning the RV. This was the trip of a lifetime for Dad and the kids.

The trip has begun! Left Oakland at 8:30pm with Jimmy Buffett blasting on the stereo. Expect to arrive in Hanford around midnight to pick up Dad. First stop was the Safeway gas station in Dublin. Only $139 for the 1st fill-up. Good thing I just got a raise!

We're reading info given us by the travel nurse which includes travel advisories. You can check it out at www.travax.com/reportgen/report.asp, or just www.travax.com and plug in the countries we'll be visiting (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia). for example, "Canoeing or swimming in waters inhabited by crocodiles and hippopotamuses can be extremely dangerous." Don't get too alarmed....

Dec 15, 2007 - Fresno and Finally Home at Oakland, CA

Saturday, December 15th, we drove to Clovis, CA which is northeast of Fresno, to visit Jim's cousins Chiaki and Kimi Takizawa. We had lunch at a lovely Japanese restaurant where we joined Chiaki and Kimi's daughter Ruri, son-in-law Gordon and grandson Mathew. Food was good and company great. We're on our final leg of the trip, CA-99 to CA-152 to I-5 to I-580. Then it was the Lakeshore exit, on to Grand Avenue, and right on Staten Ave into the parking garage of our condo located at 389 BELMONT ST APT 401 OAKLAND, CA 94610. We unloaded a few...
