Jan 21, 2012 - Lunch @ Silver Dragon

Well the Reunion which was held a the Silver Dragon Chinese Restaurant in Oakland, CA on January 21st was apparently very well received. Food was great, meeting up with old friends was wonderful and many promises made to keep in touch and to see each other again were made. While many individuals whom we had not seen for 50 years or so were easily identified, a few of us had changed over the years and only by looking closely at name tags were we able to identify each other. The unofficial committee composed of Anne and Jim Aoki, Diane Yumae...

Aug 1, 2011 - Take me out to the ballgame

Sunday and Monday were all about baseball. We went to Oakland Sunday to see the A’s beat up on the Twins. Our seats were on the 3rd base line, ROW 2. Great viewing and we’re happy for the A’s, but the Twins need to bring Tommy “Bruno” Brunansky up from the minors as batting coach—they could use some offense. After the game, we went back, grabbed the dog, and went back to the Oakland burbs for dinner with one Lysa’s former employees at Ramstein. The evening with Kristin and Judd was fabulous, as they have a better than average appreciation...

Dec 19, 2010 - A minor problem

After our arrival in Alameda, CA we discovered a little problem. My dear wife left our laptop sitting on the table at home. :-(. There is no way I can make frequent journal entries on this IPhone and no way to download photos. As a result, we will pretty much be out of touch until Jan 6th or 7th. Oh well! We'll get back to you as soon as we can. Hey, hey hey....we both we there. I will just say that "WE" neglected to load the laptop into the truck. That's WE kimosabi. I refuse to take all the blame. just sayin' juanita of course if he ends...

Aug 6, 2010 - Oakland, CA

My time in Oakland has been fundamentally driven by working for the Arts Project; Infinitarium for Burning Man, they are based out of a warehouse arts collective in Oakland called American Steel. I have only ventured into San Francisco itself on two occasions, once for a couchsurfing meet up and once to meet a Couchsurfer to go Thrift Shop hunting for Burning Man costumes. When I first arrived in Oakland, I spent 2 nights with Heidi couchsurfing, the Thursday was my arrival date and it was the Friday when I first headed to American Steel....

May 5, 2010 - t-20 days til departure

There are officially 20 days left until 7 hardworking students from Claremont head to our Nation's capitol. In order to get here, we had to do alot of fundraising, such as car washes, bake sales, a read-a-thon, candy sales, and lots and lots of donation letters. It took alot of work and dedication from all of us, and alot of help from others!...

Nov 1, 2009 - San Francisco Area and Cousin Visits

Anthony Chabot Regional Park: My cousin Roger Sparks tells me there is room to park our RV in front of their house, but I am a bit concerned about the winding roads, so Jim finds a nearby park for us to camp in Wednesday night so we can take “Frosty” to review the situation. We find the way to a “back up” spot across from a nearby school and make plans to head there early Thursday morning. We are delighted to learn that his brother Allen lives in Castro Valley (the town of the park). The park has lovely vistas, and after scouting and...

Sep 24, 2009 - Book Group and Lake Merritt

Thursday was my book group meeting, and I was assigned to bring dessert. I decided to make a carrot cake, in part because I wanted one, in part because we were going to celebrate Alice’s birthday, so I thought a cake would be a good idea. I called my husband Steve to have him read my carrot cake recipe over the phone. After he had read it to me, I asked if the recipe had a name of where I got it. He said “Joan Barenfanger, 1977.” Well, I had just spent 4 days with Joan on this road trip, so that made the decision final—carrot cake it was....

Sep 22, 2009 - Gail, Hats and Ice Cream

I had lunch and a wonderful afternoon with friend and former colleague Gail on Tuesday. I have known Gail since we worked together at Chiron, some 20-odd years ago. We ate at Dopo on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, then walked down one side and up the other, popping into various stores, and generally enjoying the warm sunny weather and talking together. We found one shop that was selling the most amazing “head gear”—I don’t know what else to call them collectively. Some were very retro hats, some were incredibly decorated headbands. We tried...

Jun 21, 2009 - Oakland Hills

We spent a very nice 10 days camping in the Oakland Hills. This is a convenient campground, being within a 30 or 40 minute drive to Matthew’s. We continue to have to deal with the 10 PM curfew, no cell phone connection, and an intermittent internet connection. While there, Duane added a row of tile in Matt & Wendy’s kitchen to complete their backsplash. He became quite intrigued with the tool lending library that they have access to. He borrowed a pole trimmer and saw and spent Father’s Day weekend working on a tree that was in desperate...

Mar 18, 2009 - Oakland, CA

We spent 15 fun days camped at a regional park in the Oakland hills. The weather for the most part was quite cool and usually drippy but we had a nice time visiting family and friends. We were able to see Matt & Wendy's home for the first time since they moved in, in Sept. It is a 1922 craftsman home in Oakland with lots of built in charm, potential, and probably, continual work. Duane worked on a couple of small jobs and seemed to like the opportunity to "fix stuff." Other family members in the Bay Area include our nephew, Joe, and our...

Dec 14, 2008 - Oakland, West Coast HOME

Well, we finally made it home. Wanted to let everyone know we are in Oakland, safe and sound. Its a bit cold here. Our neighbor turned up the heat before we got home, so we didn't have to be greeted by an ice cold apartment. I still put the heat up a bit more. We arrived back in Oakland @ 12:45pm Sunday, just in time for our Condo Holiday Party @ 2--4pm. Great fun and good food. I kidded that they really didn't have to throw a "Welcome Home" party for us. Timing was perfect and planned and it definitely made coming back to the west coast...

Jul 3, 2008 - Day 9 - Weed to Oakland, SF, and a visit with Katie

Oakland, CA - McKinley Street Erika Sue does not sleep late and I am her early morning buddy (sometimes it feels more like victim). She and I had wonderful mornings last year with Mom and Aspen still in the hotel room. Journaling has kept me up later, but after I wake up, we still have quality daddy daughter time. The Hi-Lo Motel and Cafe in Weed is Old School (except for the prices and automatic orange juice peeler/squeezer). This place has been around since the 50s and I am a sucker for nostalgia (often said I was born 30 years too late)....
