Feb 2, 2012 - Back on the Road.
Left the house with a sitter after the holidays, and returned to pick up the MH at Lake Minden. Just 4 days of great weather, then down to Bakersfield before jumping over the Tehacapi pass to Palm Desert....

From Ponderosa, we moved down to Lake Minden, which is in Nicolaus, California. We actually met a woman at Ponderosa whose family started the Lake Minde RV park, before it was purchased by Thousand Trails. While there, we decided NOT to store our RV there while we went home for the holidays. We decided to cancel our after-holiday reservations due to the potential of bad weather/road conditions in the South mountain passes in January. And after deciding that, we noticed that a storm was headed for Oregon so we had better get through the...

The drive from Mound House to Nicolaus is always easy. Not so this time, 3 things made Dave sweat alittle; first, there was numerous construction single lanes on I-80 this time; second, we took a "short cut" Dave wanted to take long ago, he won't be doing that again; third, Dave didn't listen to "Jilly" (our GPS's name) and insisted she was wrong, WRONG Dave! The many construction areas slowed us down to 40 mph for many miles and gave us white knuckles for the narrow lanes at times. We usually take that kind of thing in stride but mile...

This stay is about 20 miles south of Sacramento. We stayed at a Thousand Trails RV park called Lake Minden. It is a quite park with a lake and lots of birds which we very much enjoyed! We had fun going for walks and trying to identify the birds we saw. We identified approx. 20, with some being our very first sighting. Those were exciting for us. We spent 1 day in old town Sacramento. This was not what we had anticipated. Very big tourist trap, and very little else.

Today we are doing what we do best on the road when we aren't traveling. Rita is sewing and I am banking, checking and answering email, the girls are sleeping. It is a foggy day again here and kind of cold with the temperature in the high 40's at 10 AM. This campground is about half full right now. It was much fuller last spring when we were here. One nice thing about it is it's proximity to I5 and Sacremento. Just about the right distance to travel from Southern Oregon if you needed to. We opted to stop in Redding this time at a little...

The weather was in the low 30's this morning and the passes were all open so we headed south. We were traveling a route we have taken before, which tends to bore me. I love this life 'on the road' - I especially love the new discoveries and the sites along the way. Traveling down roads we have been on before - in this case roads we have been on several times before - is not my idea of a good time. Ken was excited to be 'on the road' - some work had been done on the CAT while at Bend and he also had a new shift panel to play with. (its a...

We came to Lake Minden and the Sacramento area to visit with Dave's other brothers. We're quite nicely surprised with the park hosting mini hydroplane races. They're fun and exciting to watch. Man o man do they fly. The small boats are powered with modified 25 hp motors the larger class boats are powered with 40 hp motors. Though the intended fishing has been interuppted by the boats, we'll get our fishing in soon enough. Sure hope to use that fish cleaning station. When we're done here we'll be going to Reno for the doctor visits, see our...
