May 20, 2009 - Yosemite: The Ahwahnee Lodge

We spent the day at Valley Floor, looking at the exhibits and crafts in the Visitors' Center and having lunch at the Ahwahnee Lodge. The Lodge is, of course, on the National register of Historic Buildings and is beautiful. It was built in 1927 at the request of John Muir, who felt Yosemite needed an upscale lodge in which to entertain and house potential donors for the park. It's a great old place, akin to the ones at Sun Valley or The Grand Canyon. One of it's rooms houses old photos of the Badger Pass Winter Recreation Area. Given our...

May 19, 2009 - Yosemite: Glacier Point

Today we took the drive to Glacier Point, which is at an elevation of 7700 feet, about 3800 feet above Valley Floor. A wagon road to the point was established in 1882 and I must say that, although now paved, it still holds much of its original character! Another "white-knuckle" ride! The road winds over Badger Pass, where there is a small downhill ski area. I cannot imagine driving this road in the winter; but I guess people do. If you are ever in Yosemite, this drive is a must. The view is breath taking. And, yes, I did look down to the...

May 18, 2009 - Yosemite Valley

We made our first trip into Yosemite today, entering via the western gate and exploring Yosemite Valley. What a beautiful place. The valley is known for its spectacular waterfalls (Anne's kind of place) and, of course, for El Capitan and The Half Dome. Once again, Indian lore has it that the Sun God became tired of listening to a couple continually argue, so he turned them into stone...the husband becoming El Capitan and the wife becoming the Half Dome. My but that Sun God was a busy fellow! The park also has beautiful meadows and the...

May 17, 2009 - Mariposa

We are in Mariposa, CA, which is about 25 miles from the western entrance to Yosemite. This is a cute little town with lots of interesting shops and places to eat. This is gold-rush country, so the California Mining Museum is located here. And the Merced River, which passes through Yosemite, runs nearby. It still hot with temperatures over 100. We experienced power-surges because everyone is running A/C, which blew out our circuits 3 times.

Sep 9, 2008 - Still in Yosemite...

Had to get up mega early today because of our long hike ahead of us! Drove in the van into the national park and parked up by about 7.30am. Started off on the hike and then at the start of the trailhead we saw the start of the trek. It was steeeeeeep! It was practically vertical uphill all of the way- and to be honest we were definitely not ready for it aha! Managed to stuggle up to a bridge- Monica was lying to us the whole way telling us that there was an amazing waterfall "just around the corner." Liar- 3 miles later we reached the...

Sep 8, 2008 - Yosemite National Park

Got up and drove to Yosemite National Park today. Got to camp around lunchtime and nearly passed out trying to put the tents up- the heat was scorchiiiing! Had to get ready to do a hike aswell which the thought of seemed impossible because of the heat. Fileld up the water bottles and put our beautiful trainers (haaaa we looked soo hot in them!) and got in the van to drive to the national park itself. Drove up to the woods where they have the tallest trees in the world and done a short hike down and up to see the trees. Realised just how...

Jul 20, 2008 - Reno to Mariposa

We slept better last night. I'm up early again and watched the sunrise over the Nevada desert and I can see the full moon. It sure is desolate. We had breakfast with a 77 year old man from Denmark who is traveling in the US with his wife. They got on the train in Salt Lake City at 2 am so she is still sleeping. An interesting man. After breakfast we found out we should be arriving in Reno at noon - only 1 1/2 hours late. Tom is waiting and after getting our luggage we are on our way. He had already stopped at Walmart for snacks and water....

Nov 19, 2007 - Yosemite Nat'l Park

Finally got out of the Travis AFB area. We ended up being "under the weather" for a while ... both of us suffered from pretty significant colds ... so we had to "lay low" for a few days. Besides that, Bonnie took a pretty nasty fall while walking one day and hurt her right arm / elbow ... not a break, but must have been a pretty nasty sprain. But ... we did enjoy Travis AFB in spite of all of that ... and did get back on the road. We set the trailer up at Mariposa CA for a couple of nights, and spent a full day at Yosemite Nat'l Park. As...

Oct 14, 2007 - Monterey to Mariposa

We left the El Adobe without any sadness! We took a short diversion to the Whole Foods market in Carmel, and bought some goodies to enjoy over the coming days in the National Parks. We also bought a packed lunch to eat on the way to Mariposa - now all we had to do was choose somewhere to stop and eat it. The coastal roads gave way to lush farmlands (mainly selling pumpkins it appeared with field after field of large orange globes visible), which in turn gave way to pale beige-brown "grasslands" of the San Joaquin Valley, other than those...

Jul 7, 2007 - Yocemite National Park

Hello from Caly Forn I A, Well, we got settled in to a nice (but crowded) KOA camp in Mariposa, California yesterday, Friday the 6th of July. Mariposa is just 23 miles outside Yosemite National Park. Last night, we went into town and visited the old Court House which was built in 1854 and is still in use today. Also, the Jail which was built in 1858 and rebuilt in 1892 after it burned down. I also got a picture of the Catholic Church, which was built in 1862. We also stopped at a bar which was billed as the oldest bar in Mariposa, and it...
