Aug 15, 2005 - La La Land

What can you do with a 12 hour layover in LA? Start by trying to go somewhere in LA with your luggage. Unless you check all your bags, you will be bringing them with you because LAX has no lockers anymore, hasn't had any since 9/11, in fact, even though the LAX website says otherwise. So, you end up doing what we did. Take a shuttle to a nearby hotel and pretend you are a guest checking out, then leave your bags with the hotel porter. By the time we did this and ate an overpriced buffet breakfast, we were already 2 1/2 hours into killing...

Jun 1, 2005 - Death Valley NP, CA, USA

We drove through Death Valley on the way between Las Vegas and Yosemite. I pretty much hate deserts, but it's another classic American landmark and another national park to check off my list. It's always fun to go below sea level and has some other nice features like salt flats and sand dunes. It also has an eerie deserted feeling to it - makes you sympathize with the pioneers who got lost there on their journey to the west. It was named for an expedition that got stranded there for a while until they found their way out of the valley - but...

Apr 25, 2005 - Big trees and bear bait

After the bright lights of Vegas we hit the road again and headed to Death Valley. Taking heed of the warning signs along the road we took the sensible option and stopped for gas and as much water as we could fit on board before venturing into the infamous death valley. With vital supplies secured we drove off into the desert. Unfortunatly (because we were gasing) we took the wrong road out of the petrol station and merrily drove for 2 hours before discovering our mistake. We had just been saying "there's not much to see out here - can't...

Soapdodgers On Tour

Apr 17, 2005 - Santa Cruz to Lone Pine, CA

This morning we said goodbye to Dionne & Eve, our hosts in Santa Cruz and headed off to Lone Pine, near Death Valley National Park. For your amusement, we'll share that the start of the day had Jenn cleaning the windshield with a windex "wet wipe" while Michelle sat in the car, pointing out each splattered bug that Jenn missed. Snickering. And snickering some more...eventually, the windshield passed the white glove test and we were off! We didn't have much to do along the drive which was nice. We stopped off where we saw something...

Jul 9, 2004 - Kev's Birthday Adventure!

Every year I try to do something adventurous for my birthday in order to not grow old (or up) to fast. Also, I have wanted to show Tina the Palisades Glacier and surrounding peaks for years, so it worked out perfect. We camped and sorted gear in Big Pine Canyon, and then headed out with heavy packs on my birthday. After seven hours and 9 miles we made camp beside a braided stream flanked with wild flowers in Sam Mack Meadow. After a fine meal of Ramon fiesta supprise, Tina treated me to an apricot, Snickers, cookie, B-cake with a candle,...

JD's Vacation 2004

Aug 21, 2001 - Mt. Whitney, CA 2001/2002

We climbed Mt. Whitney twice. The first time was the summer of 2001 as a joint birthday present to ourselves. The second time was the following year, also pretty much just for the fun of it. It had been on both our "lists" for some time... The pictures generally follow the trail up, in order, and the comments tell a little about what you're seeing. When putting together a "team" for these trips, we were fortunate in having a wealth of highly qualified people to choose from since we were both members of a search and rescue team in southern...
