Jun 3, 2013 - Siskyone Wilderness and Northern California Coast
Drove north on CA 1 to see why it was not recommended for RVs and to find The Lost Coast. If Rt. 20 was twisty/turny, CA 1 was worse only because the road was very narrow and snaked its way around the coastal headlands before heading inland to meet with US 101. We stopped at one point so I could decide whether or not to vomit! Didn’t but….you get the picure. Still, what a “wow” drive! Miles of gorgeous coastline with no towns in sight, in and out of the tsunami zones as we went up and down in elevation. The roadsides were covered with all...

Jun 2, 2013 - Mendocino, Pacific Kayaking
On Saturday, I got up early and went to the Mendocino Botanical Gardens by myself while Bob got some chores done. The Gardens are amazing! When I got there, a bird walk was just beginning so I joined it. The guide, Dave, was so knowledgeable and in the space of only a few minutes we say Anna’s and Allen’s hummingbirds flying to and fro. Dave showed us the empty hummingbird nest and shared a lot of interesting information but, I left the tour to do my own thing because I knew that Bob would be antsy to get going on other adventures. So, in...

Apr 22, 2013 - Headed North
Today we left Arroyo Grande headed north on our BIG ADVENTURE. Our drive took us thru the Salinas Valley past vineyards, fields of lettuce & other crops. Then thru the Silicon Valley - full of high tech companies. We passed a huge complex that had a sign "TESLA." We didn't recognize the name so looked it up on the ipad & found that they build electric cars & electric car components. Interesting! Driving thru the big cities on the freeway isn't our favorite thing but we made it thru Oakland, across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, thru Marin...

Apr 21, 2013 - Avenue of the Giants
Drove north in my car to see the Avenue of the Giants. This is a road through huge redwood trees and goes for 32 miles. Along the way I visited one of the famous redwoods that you can drive your car through. The tree is still alive and hundreds of feet tall. Visit My Avenue of the Giants Images Photo Album

Apr 20, 2013 - Fort Bragg and Mendocino CA
I drove to Fort Bragg CA this morning. Route 20 down to Fort Bragg is a super twisty road but it's an easy drive if you take it real slow. The Fort Bragg state campground isn't really built for an RV of my size but I managed to get the last spot that it would fit in. This is a dry camping location that is a short walk from the ocean. Explored the shore south of Fort Bragg all the way down to Mendocino CA. This town is very similar to Provincetown MA in its waterfront character and small shops. Visit My Mendocino and Fort Bragg Coastline...

Mar 10, 2013 - Getting into the pretty part of California
We have entered the luxury part of the trip. We are spending a second night in a Super 8 Motel. Judy is driving a van and the camper is at her house. Today was one of those days that we are saying is the best day yet. Since Judy is driving, I can take time to type. Yesterday, we visited a town called Solvang. It was a tourist trap but one of the prettiest ones I have seen. It was a Danish town that maintained its original design. It was clean and we took lots of pictures. For those of you who have ever been to Denmark, they did have public...

Sep 23, 2012 - Orick, CA to Fort Bragg, CA
Day twenty three: Destination - Fort Braggs, CA Soundtrack - America, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson We went to the ranger station to get our free permits to drive on Tall Tree Road. The drive was a little long and quite rough, but the four mile hike around gigantic trees was very pretty. The trees are literally as tall as you can see, and the tops disappear into the leaves above. There were several fallen trees on the path. Most of the time, they were cut at the path and left only on either side, but there was one that someone had cut a...

Jul 18, 2012 - Ft. Bragg, CA
18 Jul 2012. We are moving on to Ft. Bragg, CA, another unscheduled stop due to fire. The drive here was mostly through forests, very scenic. We went through a couple of larger cities, Arcata and Eureka, but since we had the RV we really can’t make any unscheduled stops. We are disappointed to find out that our AT&T cell service is still not working at the campsite – we have to go into town and sit in the Safeway parking lot to use our phone and computer – very annoying. We were told by someone in Oregon that if we came to Ft. Bragg we...

Jun 18, 2012 - Pygmy Forest
Fort Bragg, CA. As Jim was not feeling well, we cancelled our morning plans. He was feeling better by afternoon so we spent a few hours at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The Gardens have been around since 1961. It encompasses 47 acres stretching from Highway 1 to the ocean and includes canyons, wetlands, coastal bluffs, and a closed-cone pine forest(trees that rely on fire or strong heat to open their cones and release the seeds). There are tons of trails through the grounds and we walked them all. After the Gardens we entertained...

Jun 17, 2012 - Foggy, foggy, clear, foggy, foggy, foggy
Fort Bragg, CA. We left Santa Rosa where it was in the 90's and drove just 23 miles to the coast where it was in the 50's. Amazing. We continued our drive along the coast up Highway 1. Although it was a bright, sunshiny day to the east, looking west was total fog. It made for some interesting views. The road is carved out from the edge of the cliffs. There are so many curves that they did not bother to put up signs - even for the 10 to 15 mph hairpin turns. At one point we pulled off to admire the view and spotted some sea lions basking in...

May 15, 2012 - Returning to the Coast
Yesterday, Kim and Craig treated us to a delicious lunch at their favorite local Mexican restaurant. Then John and Craig went to the casino for a while together while Kim and I did a WalMart run. We really enjoyed having the chance to spend some time with Kim and Craig. Thanks guys. -- Today was another travel day and one which we knew would be a tough one, so we were up and away early once again. We didn't have a lot of miles to travel but the road was narrow and windy for most of the way. We traveled from Oroville south to Highway 20,...
