Mar 12, 2013 - El Centro, CA

Day 6 - March 10 A lazy Sunday morning and Jim called to tell us to look out the window - we had burrowing owls on the ridge behind us. It was a confusing morning. I awoke thinking it was an hour later, but then was reminded that Arizona does not go on Daylight Savings Time, so I could slow down and take my time getting ready to go to church. After church, we hooked up the vehicles and had a little more than an hour to drive to El Centro, California. The drive from Yuma to the Naval Air Station El Centro was about 80 miles, a lot of which...

Mar 2, 2012 - Mardi Gras, The Farm, The Zoo, and the Road to Salvation

The saga of the doors continues – no word on their arrival date yet. As long as they get here before we leave, I really don’t care. Our plans have changed a little since we found out that by the 1st of April the park becomes a ghost town; so instead of leaving the 15th of April as planned we moved it up to the 7th. That gives us that week to spend with Bret & family as they had already planned to come down. We will divide our time between here, San Diego, and Palm Springs – wherever the mood and weather takes us. We had planned to trade our...

Feb 13, 2012 - Desert Living

So we are now to the middle of February. We have been here just over a month and I do have to say it seems like longer. Not that we aren’t enjoying ourselves, but there is not all that much to see and do in the area and maybe we have done most of it. We know our way around town just fine, so I think we need to reach out a little to surrounding areas to find some new things to do. There is plenty to do here at the park which is good, and the town of El Centro offers very good shopping (complete with a new mall anchored by Sears, Penneys,...

Jan 31, 2012 - So you can see where we are...

I forgot to include some pictures we took of Rio Bend Golf & RV Resort, where we are staying and thought you might like to see what our oasis here in the desert looks like. For once, there are no trains nearby (never too sure whether all RV parks are near railroad tracks or if the ones Buzz picks are near railroad tracks), but we are awakened most mornings by the Blue Angels as El Centro is their winter home. Somehow neither of us seems to mind very much as it is so exciting to see them flying their maneuvers overhead. So enjoy the...

Jan 30, 2012 - Settling in to the Sand

The end of January already, and time for an update. We have been here for almost 3 weeks, moved our RV site, changed our jobs, explored the region and met a whole group of friendly people. We wondered if being so close to Mexico and being inundated with Mexicans and the Spanish language would bother us, and I have to say we are quite enamored with El Centro. Of course, the RV park is about 80 % Canadian and the town is about 95% Mexican, so we are definitely in the minority. The other workampers are all Americans so we get to mix with a...

Jan 21, 2012 - Home on the Range

I apologize for taking so long in updating our location, but we have been a little busy getting settled here in El Centro, CA (I guess I have been a little lazy too). We left Yuma last Thursday morning and were here just after lunchtime as we were only about an hour away. The ride over was uneventful, except for going through the agricultural inspection station and the immigration check. If you have never lived in California you would be intimidated by these things, but our remembrances from Glendale days made these checkpoints just part of...

Jan 14, 2012 - January 14, 2012 -- El Centro, California to Willcox, Arizona

January 14 – I followed interstate 8 to Gila Bend, Arizona this morning. Near Winterhaven, CA there were lots and lots of boondockers. They were camped in the sand dunes and many of them were riding dune buggies over the sand dunes. In several places they were camped within spitting distance of the infamous fence which is being built along the US-Mexico border. I missed the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. There was only one turn off of 85, and I managed to take the wrong one. By the time I figured out what I had done, I would have had...

Feb 5, 2011 - El Centro, CA.

Feb 5-7. El Centro, CA. We had another BIG travel day of 97 miles to Desert Trail RV Park & Golf Course. Remember we had to go out on that 21 miles of mountain road. This was a nice and easy park to get to. We had a nice pull-thru site which makes parking really easy. The park was nicely layed out. I walked the park a few times. Colleen went with me the first time so I could find my way back to trailer(just kidding). We went shopping for Super Bowl necessities. Sunday we rested up for the Super Bowl. The right team won. Monday we were on...

Jan 28, 2011 - What a Day!!

We had a really long day today! JoAnn got Doug out of bed about 7:30 this morning so we could get an early start on the road. Doug normally arises between 9 and 10 so this was really early for him. As a result he knocked a full cup of coffee off of the table soaking the rug, the blinds over the window, and the crock pot cover underneath the table. JoAnn had to use her scheduled ready to go routine time to clean up the mess. Fortunately her computer was not in the spill zone. Then when Doug de-plugged the rig, she noticed that our batteries...

Living Our Dream

Jan 4, 2011 - Exploring

Just went for drive today to check out the area. Decided this is not the kind of place we want to spend months in. However.............we did find an area more suited to our likes. Took a tour of the Indio Outdoor Resorts. Now that's a nice place. We could see ourselves spending time there.

Our travels

Apr 17, 2010 - El Centro, CA

We finally left Mesa yesterday and got into El Centro, CA yesterday afternoon. We are staying at the FAMCAMP on the Navy air base. El Centro is near the Salton Sea which is actually below sea level. There is not much to do here. We did go over to Niland, CA. There are some hot springs in the area if you want to look them up. Also there is a place east of Niland called Salvation Mountain. A gentleman, Leonard Knight, started painting the "mountain" 26 years ago and has not stopped. Mr. Knight is now 78 years old, and still gives tours of his...

Mar 15, 2010 - Final days in El Centro, CA

Well, we've had a fantastic time here in El Centro, California. Met many very nice people and created many lasting memories. The fish fry the other night was unbelievable. Lots of Cod, Halibut and Shrimp. All deep fried and served with a great cole slaw. It was an all you can eat so for sure I took advantage of the quantities. We sat with our neighbours in the park, Norm and Stella from Madison, Wisconsin along wih a couple from Duncan, Vancouver Island and the other couple were from (believe it or not) Winfield, BC a couple of miles up...
