Mar 18, 2014 - Crescent City, CA.....Where the Redwoods Meet the Sea

Northern California ends with Crescent City and the National and State Redwood Forests. The forests are spectacular with dense collections of massive trees that are hundreds of years old. Fred hiked one trail to absorb the beauty and serenity close up. Crescent City is an aging fishing town, probably past its prime. But the sea lions were more sociable than elsewhere - they come right up to the parking lot for photo opportunities. The town has recovered from 2 tsunamis and there is an interesting recap of them in the local museum. Through...

Oct 16, 2013 - Redwood's Nat'l Park

Wow! Another one of those special days. Visiting the Redwoods Nat'l Park. Even though the Fed's are still closed, that won't stop folks from seeing the Redwoods. It is located right through Rt. 101 and that is a public road. So off we go. Wow what large trees. Extremely large at the truck and very very tall as you will see in the photos. The Redwoods are an evergreen and are long-lived, living 1200–1800 years or more. They are one of the tallest trees living now on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet in height and up to 26 feet in diameter....

Jul 27, 2013 - Battery Park

July 27 Started the day with a tour at Battery Park Lighthouse. Only open to the public at low tide which meant we needed to go early. Bit of a wait but it was really cool to visit an actual working lighthouse. There were docents throughout that explained lifestyle of a family living in a lighthouse for over 40 years! Afterwards we went back up into the trees. This time we drove through the park instead of walking, it was a nice drive. Some of the parts of the road were very interesting (read tight!), it was awesome to drive through the...

Jul 26, 2013 - Redwood Forest

July 26 Trees, trees, glorious trees. We went on an awesome walk in the State Park, and took tons of pictures. Sadly no picture that I can take does them justice. I will include a few shots here though. Keisha was so excited to go on the walk, she really loves redwood trees. Went to a spot called Stout Grove which is where they filmed the Ewok scenes in Star Wars. Check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ewkfdEc1bg There is something about how they smell that drives Dachshunds wild. Oh, and the chipmunks or were those Ewoks?

Jul 25, 2013 - Crescent City, California

July 25 Travel day again, but this time it was a short trip. We had a leisurely start to the day and then moseyed down to Crescent City. Because this was a relatively short drive got a very late start to this travel day, a perk of being in the car longer the day before. Crossed into California before lunch. We decided to take a quick Sydney stop at the Premium Outlet Mall, and our little princess was able to lighten her wallet and get some ‘essential’ girl things like a new purse and nail polish. Apparently having a nail emergency is a...

Jul 24, 2013 - From Sea to shining Sea

Garmin said for us to take the highway....cousin Sharon Fleming said take the 101 along the coast.....we listened to cousin Sharon and we are glad that we did. We hit the Pacific Ocean at Newport Oregon and followed it down a bit to a highway pullover. The kids and us all got out and ran along the sand. It was windy and cold (normal of Oregon coast) and so pretty. We climbed down the rocks, saw some green anemones in the tidal pools and took pictures. We loaded back into the RV and headed to Sea Lion Caves. We stopped and ate lunch and I...

Jul 10, 2013 - Crescent City, CA.

We made it to Crescent City California after a grueling 60 mile drive from Trinidad, that took a whole hour driving thru Large trees and along a beautiful coastline. Crescent City is a small coastal community located in the far northwest corner of California close to the Oregon border. The biggest problem we have had here is the fog! We are hoping the fog lifts next week as we head north. We took a very neat hike on our first day here to "Hidden Beach" a very picturesque beach that is about 13 miles south of here and requires about a 2 1/2...

Jul 9, 2013 - Crescent City -- Day One

On Tuesday, July the 8th, five of us drove 13 miles south to hike a section of the Coast trail to Hidden Beach. The distance out and back was about 3 ½ miles with some elevation gain/loss. It was a pretty easy hike. The fog was still pretty bad so the photo opportunities were not the best, but we all enjoyed the hike. Thanks to Harold and Bob for some pictures. May 11, 2013 - Point St. George, one of our favorite boondocking sites!

This morning we awoke to low clouds and fog, but as we traveled north on US 101, the sun began to appear. By the time we were in Redwood National Park, the sun was out, at least above the lofty giants we were in the midst of. We had hoped to find some fresh water to add to the tank for tonight, but we didn't find any that was easily available. We have enough for the basics so we'll be fine for another night without hookups. We could easily have chosen an RV park in Crescent City with full hookups for the night, but this setting is so...

Apr 24, 2013 - Land of the giants

We have arrived at the California coast and have driven the "Avenue of the Giants". The giants are the tall Redwood trees you see all over Northern California and they really are giants, standing up to 300' (100 meters) tall and up to 21'(7 meter) in diameter. We were told by a friendly Californian to take a small back road so we could drive right through a grove of Redwoods, as you can see on the picture there was not a lot of room to pass between trees at places. We went for an hour long walk (trail) and saw such a variety of beautiful...

Apr 22, 2013 - Crescent City, Ca

We are now in Crescent City, CA ,less than 100 miles from Turtle Rock. We hope they will be ok with our coming in Wed. We had planned on going up to Crater Lake, but it is still closed. Not intended, we are staying at the same RV park that we stayed two years ago, before heading east for Colorado. The park is in the Redwood Forest. We are getting a sample of what we may expect at Turtle Rock, plenty of wind. To compensate, there was also plenty of seafood. Jean is happy as a clam, and figures on finding every seafood opportunity within 100...
