Aug 20, 2005 - NEW TRIP: Getting to the Oregon Coast -- A Side Trip to Far Northern California

8/17 Bend to Chiloquin We'd only been back in Bend for three days, but still being "homeless" we knew it was time to leave again. By "homeless" I refer only to the fact that the construction of our new townhouse near Bend was woefully behind schedule, and there was little we could do to speed things up. "Waiting" for something to happen - especially when you can't control the outcome, can be a bit frustrating. Progress had clearly been made since our last visit to Bend, but it would be at least another 4 weeks before it could possibly be...

Aug 17, 2005 - Day 12 - Riding the Coast

Day 12 Wednesday, August 17 Left Coos Bay about 7:30. It was 53 degrees and clear. We headed down the Pacific Highway coast (101). When we go to the scenic part, the views of the ocean were great. We went down on the beach once so I could get hear the surf, smell the saltwater and get my feet wet in the Pacific. The temperature the whole time we were on the coast never got above 70, but it started to get too sunny so Ray led us into a 30 mile fog bank. The fog started clearing about the time we hit the California border and we pushed on to...

Jun 4, 2005 - Redwood NP, CA, USA

Katie had a flight out of Portland in just a couple of days so we hightailed it out of SF and headed towards Oregon. On the way we stopped at Redwoods national park. I was excited to see the giant redwood trees and was very enthusiastic when we stopped at the visitors center at the edge of the forest just a few minutes before they were set to close up. My enthusiasm was dampened when we got our map and went to head out of the parking lot. The car started and then died. I tried again with the same result. Great. I was hoping to get more than...

May 14, 2005 - Redwood National Park/Elk Prairie Creek Camp Ground

Left the campground in Upqua Head State Park by 8:00 AM and got fuel in Coos Bay, OR., then stopped in some little coastal town where we could pick up grocery items, do laundry, and mail post cards all in the same stop (this way we keep on Walt's schedule...just kidding! We don't have a planned schedule exactly, just a road plan.) The state entry port was closed, so we just drove on through, and would you believe some idiot tried to pass us in an entry lane! Then the first town we came to, we stopped at a National Parks visitor center for...
