May 1, 2013 - Hitting the Road

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Friday, May 3, 2013 10 am I’ve finished up my motorhome repairs and maintenance over the past 6 weeks and will be heading north on my Summer Migration starting May 5th. I had my faulty inverter and generator circuit breaker replaced on April 11th. I’m having my old inverter repaired so I have it as a backup should I ever take the motorhome to Alaska where I will have to do a lot of dry camping (i.e. camping without hook-ups where I have to rely on the generator and power inverter). Both the...

2013 Summer Tour

Apr 25, 2013 - Chula Vista, CA

We made it! We left Castaic at 9:30AM and arrived here in Chula Vista at 1:30PM. This put us in Los Angeles from 10 to 12. Interstate 5 all the way. There were some bottlenecks and construction, so we didn't get through totally without being caught up in traffic. What an incredible rat maze of freeways! I don't know how some people do it every day. I fell in with the truck traffic and just watched for my lane changes. The second half of the trip was much better. I-5 from LA south is much newer and less congested. In the last 90 minutes we...

The Great Escape

Mar 22, 2013 - Downloads & Truck Stops

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Friday, March 22, 2013 3 pm It’s been a quiet month here in Chula Vista. I’ve spent my time talking with full-time RVing friends, downloading music and ordering stuff online. I’m continuing with my motorhome maintenance and getting ready to hit the road again in May I did go to see “Silver Linings Playbook” before the Oscars. They had projector trouble at the local multiplex that night that delayed the showing by 40 minutes, so they handed out free tickets. I used my free ticket later that month...

Feb 16, 2013 - Motorhome Maintenance

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Saturday, Feb 16, 2013 10 am Greetings from Chula Vista. I hope you had a loving Valentine’s Day and managed to please your sweetie. I have no Sweetie to please (except for Rascal), so it was an ordinary day for me. The last month and a half have been spent with Motorhome maintenance. My rig will be 4 years old in June and has spent its days outside all the time in the western sun - which has done a number on the top surfaces. The paint on the roof was completely oxidized and running off in long...

Jan 5, 2013 - Christmas in Chula Vista

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Saturday, Jan 5, 2013 4 pm It’s been a quiet month in Chula Vista, my winter home. I spent the last month taking care of maintenance, getting ready for and then celebrating Christmas and then treating myself to some things I really needed. I switched my Medicare Rx Plan from Medco/Express Scripts to AARP United Health Care to save at least $300 per year. I had the car windshield replaced – again. I got a rock in the windshield in southern Oregon/northern California on the way south in October. I...

Nov 27, 2012 - Thanksgiving in Chula Vista

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 Noon I’ve been back in Chula Vista CA at the Chula Vista Elks for a month now and am beginning to get my house in order. I’ve got the coach washed outside so it looks better than it has since last winter. I’ve dusted and cleaned up inside. My hair has been permed and cut, and my teeth cleaned. I’ve also had my teeth bleached for the first time ever so they are not so yellow. I got a flu shot as well as a Tetanus/Pertussis booster at Walgreens. Since I camp all the time and...

Oct 25, 2012 - Back "Home" in Chula Vista

Chula Vista Elks RV Parking, Chula Vista, CA Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 5 pm I’m back in Chula Vista CA for the winter. Back in a bare parking lot with hookups and my good friends Bob and Carolyn Williams nearby. Back among the Elks. It was a more adventuresome trip this year, but I did less damage to the motorhome than last year. Only 1 compartment door needs to be replaced and some painting. (That Shell station whose protective poles placed at least 2 ft in front of the gas pumps attacked my right rear-most door in early June as I tried to...

Jun 18, 2012 - Chula Vista CA

Today was kind of slow to develop. We left here about 11:00 to get some grub for the bus, but our first stop was Aunt Emma’s Pancake House for some breakfast. Always a good idea to go to the grocery store with a full stomach and I think you know why. Michele had a salsa omelet and a mango crepe that she really liked and since it was a pancake house, I had a bacon cheeseburger. Pancakes…yuk. From there we headed to Von’s – Safeway’s California edition – to restock the bus before we start our eastward trek tomorrow. We got back about 1:30 and...

Westbound Again

Jun 17, 2012 - Chula Vista CA

We got out of here at 11:00 and were on our way to do a 60 mile driving tour of the San Diego area west of I-5. We started out along the navy base and then headed across the Coronado Bridge to – conveniently – Coronado Island and the Hotel Del Coronado. The hotel is very, very nice. In fact it is so nice, they charge $78.50 per person for their Sunday Brunch. That is Seventy-eight dollars and fifty cents for each person. Not per couple. Not per family. And you have to get up and go get your own food. Crazy. For that price I would eat all...

Westbound Again

Jun 16, 2012 - Chula Vista CA

We left at about 8:30 and headed to Rob’s families machine shop about 10 minutes from the campground. We got the deluxe tour of the shop and got to see Sue, Rob and Jennifer before Sue & Rob flew to Seattle, then to Hawaii this afternoon. We left there about 9:30, got back to the campground and washed the bus, then got on the road at about 11:15. We headed out of Orange County southbound on I-5 toward San Diego and as expected, the traffic was brutal. But I think I’ve whined about the traffic just about enough – you can guess how it...

Westbound Again

Apr 24, 2012 - Chula Vista Tuesday

We woke up to a little drizzle Monday morning, but by the time we were ready to leave for Sea World, it had stopped for the day. My favorite part was a cylinder aquarium that we walked through on a people-mover (like at the airport). The sharks and other fish were above and all around us – it was so-o-o cool! We also went to both the sea lion and Shamu shows. The best part of the sea lion show was the pre-show entertainer. He donned costumes and danced to many of my favorite songs from Flashdance, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night...

Apr 22, 2012 - Chula Vista Sunday

We spent most of the day today on the USS Midway. This carrier was the largest in the fleet at the time, and didn’t fit through the Panama Canal! There were 225 cooks, and they had to prepare ten tons of food every day! It was deployed from 1945 until 1992, most recently seeing action during Operation Desert Storm. There were about twenty veterans at different parts of the ship, telling us their stories. When we were ready to leave, Bill thought he knew the way, and he took me around a corner and led me right into the men’s room (oops)! I...
