Apr 23, 2013 - Channel Islands Natl Park

Today has to be the best yet of this trip. We took a boat out to Santa Cruz in the Channel Islands State Park and expected a nice ride (it was a calm day), a hike, and maybe to see some birds we had not spotted this trip. All of that happened pretty much as we anticipated, and the walk was especially interesting. The volunteer who led it told us a great deal about the history of the island, the damage done by the animals brought in by ranchers, the endemic species (nearly 150 including plants and animals) and how they are gradually...

May 11, 2012 - Channel Islands N.P.

We had another one of those "wowser" days. We took a tour to the Channel Islands National Park. It took about an hour to cross Santa Barbara Channel from Ventura Harbor. Our catamaran landed at East Santa Cruz Island, Scorpion Anchorage. During our crossing we saw one Humpback Whale, several sea lions, one with a baby pup. We saw hundreds of dolphins swimming along beside our boat. The tour guide said they always come out and greet the boats, both going to the islands and returning home. They were jumping all around the boat and everyone...

The weather the past few days has been beautiful, but windy so we were delighted this morning to find the ocean relatively calm and with very little wind. It was still chilly so we layered our hiking...

Dec 9, 2007 - Channel Islands National Park

The weather gods must be looking out for me. Today was beautiful, although a bit chilly for Southern California, and I boarded a boat for Channel Islands National Park. It had been rainy and the wind so strong the previous two days that all cruises had been cancelled. I certainly have lucked out with the weather. We sailed out of Ventura Harbor for Santa Cruz Island, the largest among the Channel Islands. There are five islands within Channel Islands National Park, but boats sail to only two of them during the winter months. Although just...
