Jan 11, 2014 - It's a Boy!

Well, we knew it was going to be a boy, so it was no surprise, but he's here!!! Congratulations to Lesley and Malcolm, for producing my only grand-newphew! Three hours labour! Healthy! Perfect! And now mama can walk like a normal person again! Can't wait for the details.

Jan 9, 2014 - Borrego Springs

We spent a day of putting things back together after A & H left -- doing some laundry, M getting her feet back under her, and so forth. This trip, we haven't had great success with revisiting restaurants we have enjoyed in the past. (We ordered take out pizza one night from Villaggio's and it wasn't until we got it home that we discovered they'd given us a kind no one liked, not what we ordered at all. Another night we ordered take out from Panera Breads and not one of the orders was correct -- again, not discovered till too late. Very...

Jan 4, 2014 - Unbelievable Hike

Yesterday was a once in a lifetime hike. Totally unbelievable. About 9AM we started up into Borrego Palm Canyon and after about half hour we came up upon a woman on her way back out. She reported that she had seen nothing except a few birds on her hike. - We continued on the trail for awhile and decided that we would just turn around and return to the Jeep. It wasn't long before Eagle Eye Judy spotted one and then two and then three. We watched and watched as other hikers came and went. We watched them on the mountain top as you can see in...

Jan 1, 2014 - Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEARS to everyone. Wishing you a happy and healthy year to come. - Yesterday we were up early and wanted to do a small hike so we picked out the Tamarisk Grove area taking the Yaqui Well Nature Trail. In the brochure it said it was "easy" but friends don't believe everything you read. - As usual, Eagle Eye Judy spotted the first Bighorn as we made our way up the trail. We watched and watched and soon more and more arrived on the scene. At one time we could count a total of 15 in view. It looked like 2 Rams were in charge of the...

Dec 29, 2013 - Jeeping the Borrego Badlands

Yesterday was a first for Judy and I. - Our day started with meeting other 4 Wheel Drivers at the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association building at 8:30 in the morning. We had signed up earlier in the week and we were looking forward to the trip. There were a total of 8 other 4 wheel drive vehicles. There was a woman with a Subaru Outback and the leader advised that she not take it due to the ground clearance so we said she could ride along with us. She was a retired librarian from Oregon and was a delight to talk to. - Our...

Dec 27, 2013 - Trip to Julian with Eagle Eye

Yesterday we planned on taking a little road trip to the mountain village of Julian which is located at over 4000 ft elevation. It was a 30 mile trip which consisted of 2 areas of twisty, curvy and steep grades. I would never think or even consider taking that route with our trailer attached but we saw many RV'ers on that route and they either must have been young and stupid or old and senile. - Driving out and back into Anza-Borrego State Park several times on the trip I wanted to check out Tamarisk Grove Campground on the way. As we...

Dec 25, 2013 - Merry Christmas, Montezuma Grade, and the Salton Sea

First I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Yesterday one of the volunteers here said "On behalf of the Park I want to apologize for the weather, I know you wanted snow". WRONG. It was 80 degrees yesterday and should be the same today. Life is GOOD. - Since our arrival we have been wanting to see what was up the squiggly line road on the map. That road is Montezuma Grade which takes you from the desert floor up to 4000' in not too many miles. There are switchbacks after switchbacks with some incredible views of the Borrego Valley...

Dec 23, 2013 - You Don't Have to Feel Bad

I told Judy that when we sold our home at Cochiti Lake I did not feel the least bit bad about it, but I know that leaving here will almost bring a tear to my eye. Judy agreed so I turned the laptop on and started searching and found that the campsite right in front of us is available for a week the same day we are scheduled to leave. What, I could not believe it. I made the reservation so now we'll be here another 2 weeks from today. - Today I attached some photo's of the campground here and some of the Christmas decorations that we put up...

Dec 22, 2013 - Everyone Is Doing It All Wrong !!!

On our Palm Canyon hike I mentioned to Judy that what we are doing now should have been done at the first half of our "life cycle", say between the ages of 20-45 years old and then you should work for 25 years, between the ages of 40-65. We're all doing it wrong. - This has been a wonderful adventure the past 25 years being married to Judy and without her I doubt that we would have done some of the fantastic things that we did. Actually it was Judy's Mom that brought the Southwest into our lives. Her Mom had photo's of New Mexico and...

Dec 21, 2013 - More on Sky Art Metal Sculptures

Last night Judy and I attended a Borrego Springs Sundowner. From what I understand the Chamber of Commerce has a informal get together monthly at different establishments in town and last night it was at Palm Canyon Resort & RV Park. It's in the style of a western town, each old looking western building has lodging and it's a "special atmosphere" resort with a nice RV Park in the rear. From what the locals say they just did a $2 million renovation of the establishment and it sure did look nice. - Last nights Sundowner started at 5PM with...

Dec 20, 2013 - Our Palm Canyon Big Horn Hike

We were at the Trailhead this morning at 8:30 for our 3 mile round trip hike. From what we understood it was a moderate hike but it was everything but moderate. Maybe for a younger person with no health issues it would have been OK but right now I can hardly move. - Don't get me wrong it was wonderful and we both enjoyed being outside with nature and even with the sore muscles we don't regret going. After about the first half hour Judy and I could hear some rocks falling off in the distance and after some searching we saw 4 Big Rams on the...

Dec 19, 2013 - Sky Art at Galleta Meadows

Yesterday we visited Galetta Meadows, Property owned by Dennis Avery (died 2012), he was the Avery of Avery Labels who in 2008 commissioned artist Ricardo Breceda to create life size or larger metal sculptures on his 3 square miles of property here in Borrego Springs. - I took 139 photos yesterday but only attached 10 in todays entry but will post more in a later entry. - Avery commissioned 129 pieces of art to be placed in a natural setting along the highway north and south of town. We really enjoyed our day seeing all the creations such...
